LEXINGTON, Indiana (WLKY) — An Indiana woman is facing charges after children and dozens of dogs were found living in “very filthy” conditions.
Ashlee Mashburn, 42, of Scott County, is charged with neglect of a dependent and cruelty to animals.
According to court records, police were called to her home this week in Lexington, Indiana for a welfare check. When officers arrived, they could see fecal matter “all over the floor and countertops.”
When Mashburn answered the door, she told police she had at least 20 dogs, and kept them to keep them from being euthanized. She said they were planning to turn a barn into a place for the dogs.
Some neighbors say they can’t imagine what the family experienced.
“Even just as a mom, knowing that kids were there is the most upsetting part for me and knowing that another mom had to be in those conditions. Maybe there’s mental health conditions. Who knows what her state of mind was but it’s upsetting all around,” said Tyler Wilkerson, neighbor.
Other neighbors say the situation has also been disturbing.
“I think it’s mismanagement of property. I think it’s bad stewardship of any property unless you’re going to take care of them,” said Davon Wilkerson, neighbor, “I think housing that many animals of any kind is is pretty gross.”
According to officials, 42 dogs lived at the house with her children and husband, who was traveling for work.
All children and animals were removed from the home, and child protective services is involved.
No further details were immediately available.
