George E. Johnson Sr., founder of Johnson Products and Mississippi native, dies at 99

JACKSON, Mississippi (WAPT) — George E. Johnson Sr., the Mississippi native who built one of the nation’s first Black-owned, multimillion-dollar businesses, has died at the age of 99.
Johnson’s family announced his death in a statement, saying he “passed away peacefully at home,” leaving behind “an extraordinary legacy of entrepreneurship, faith, perseverance, philanthropy, and family.”
Born in 1927 in Richton, Mississippi, Johnson spent his early years in Perry County before moving with his family to Chicago as a child. There, he worked shining shoes and bussing tables to help support his family.
Johnson went on to found Johnson Products Co., the pioneering Black-owned hair care company behind iconic brands including Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen. The company became a trailblazer in the beauty industry and, in 1971, became the first Black-owned business listed on the American Stock Exchange.
His success helped pave the way for generations of Black entrepreneurs while transforming the hair care industry.
In its statement, the Johnson family said his influence extended far beyond business.
“George’s life was a testament to the power of vision, determination and service,” the family said. “He inspired countless people through his leadership, generosity and unwavering belief in creating opportunities for others.”
Johnson remained active in philanthropy throughout his life, supporting educational initiatives, community organizations and programs aimed at expanding economic opportunity.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Johnson is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, who said they are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
