Kansas prison inmate’s death under investigation

LANSING, Kan. (KAKE) — A 39-year-old inmate at a northeast Kansas prison died after being found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday, the Kansas Department of Corrections said.
George Eugene Phillips, who has been at the Lansing Correctional Facility since September 2, 2025, was pronounced dead after staff and EMS were unable to revive him. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
“Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation,” the Department of Corrections said Monday. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Phillips was serving a 577-month sentence for convictions of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and criminal threat in Sedgwick County. He’d been in prison since July 19, 2023.
Phillips also had prior convictions on multiple counts of aggravated robbery as well as drug possession, criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated escape.
