BROWNS SUMMIT, North Carolina (WXII) — A Browns Summit woman is facing 13 charges in Guilford County after court documents say three children were assaulted and found living in unsafe conditions.
Sabrina Lauren Spruill is charged with three counts of assault by strangulation, three counts of assault on a child under 12, three counts of intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and one count of communicating threats.
Court records show Spruill appeared in court Tuesday for a bond hearing. Her bond was set at $75,000 secured.
According to court documents, witnesses heard children screaming for help inside a home and intervened, separating the children from Spruill.
The documents say Spruill is accused of holding down and choking the children at separate times. Court records also say she poured hot wax on their heads and necks and made statements about trying to “get the devil out of them.”
Investigators said the children had marks and bruises on their bodies. Court documents also described the home as extremely filthy and unsanitary.
According to the documents, there was no edible food accessible to the children because the refrigerator was locked. The home also did not have proper bedding, and the children were malnourished, court records say.
The children are listed as ages 8, 7, and 4.
Court documents say Spruill has an open Child Protective Services case. She is not allowed to have contact with the children and must follow CPS recommendations.
She was also ordered not to assault, threaten or harass any witnesses. Court documents say Spruill needs a mental health evaluation.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office lists Spruill as having a court date Thursday, June 25.
Spruill is being held in the Guilford County jail.
