WELLINGTON, Florida (WPBF) — A Delray Beach man is facing a felony charge after deputies say he took a valuable package that did not belong to him from a UPS Store in Wellington.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Jorge Manuel Garcia is accused of grand theft after a package containing silver worth more than $20,000 was picked up by the wrong person.

Investigators say the victim ordered about 300 one-ounce silver rounds and had them shipped to a mailbox at a UPS Store along Wellington Trace. The package was delivered in the afternoon, and just minutes later, a man walked into the store and showed a tracking number on his phone, saying he was there to pick it up.

Employees handed over the package after the man showed a Florida driver’s license. A short time later, the victim arrived and was told the delivery had already been claimed, prompting a call to deputies.

Surveillance video inside the store captured the suspect entering and leaving with the package, according to the report. Detectives later used still images from that video to try to identify the man.

Authorities say multiple tips helped identify Garcia as the suspect. A store employee later picked him out of a photo lineup as the person who picked up the package.

Investigators also say a relative confirmed Garcia was the person seen in the surveillance images.

Garcia is now accused of grand theft involving more than $20,000 but less than $100,000. Deputies sought a warrant for his arrest as the investigation moved forward.
