YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – A local business in Yuma celebrated 48 years Saturday.

According to the store’s website, the Peanut Patch opened its doors in 1977 after Gerry and Franny Didier turned their love of peanut farming into a small shop.

However, after Gerry’s passing in 1990, the store underwent different ownership until the George family became permanent owners since 1997, the website said.

Donna George shared why the store remains a landmark in Yuma County.

“We’re an attraction…People have to want to come here to come here. We are a family home-type business. You know, we like it if our customers feel like they’re at home when they walk through the door,” she explained.

During Saturday’s anniversary event, which took place at the store from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there were two authors holding a book signing for their books respectively, a display of World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorabilia, and tamales were handed out to attendees.

George says they will hold another anniversary celebration next Saturday.
