Firefighters continue to battle overnight structure fire in downtown Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) remains at the scene of a commercial building fire on the western edge of downtown.
The blaze is at the corner of Sahwatch Street and Colorado Avenue.
Firefighters ask the public to avoid the area, as streets surrounding the fire are closed.
Firefighters began arriving at the scene shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, and found the vacant building engulfed in flames.
According to the CSFD, the building’s roof collapsed — forcing firefighters to battle the flames and smoke from outside, and from above with two ladder trucks.
Complicating matters is that one of the two ladder trucks — and older model — temporarily failed and had to be operated manually.
Still, those trucks were able to continue pouring steady streams of water onto the burning building.
The CSFD will start its investigation into the fire’s cause after it is declared under control and extinguished.
This is a developing story. We will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.
