EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — ABC-7 is tracking some key races across Texas and around the Borderland, including New Mexico.

A lot of eyes are on the Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton, who is currently the Texas Attorney General.

Candidates for Texas U.S. Senator.

If Talarico were to win, it would be the first time since 1988 that Texas sent a Democrat to the Senate. The state hasn’t chosen anyone but a Republican for statewide office since 1994.

The Borderland is also following two competitive House races: the Texas 23rd and New Mexico 2nd Congressional Districts. Both have historically been difficult for any party to hold.

For U.S. Representative of Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout faces Republican Brandon Herrera.

In New Mexico, Democratic incumbent U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez is running against Republican candidate Greg Cunningham. Vasquez is seeking his third term.

Candidates for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.

The New Mexico 2nd in the southern part of the state, including Doña Ana County, has switched hands multiple times — going to Democrats in 2018, then to Republicans in 2020. Current Democratic U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez then won by just over a thousand votes in 2022, and held it through 2024.

But even with those impacts of decennial redistricting, it’s still a challenge for Democrats. The New Mexico 2nd was one of just over a dozen congressional districts that elected a Democrat in 2024 while also voting more for Donald Trump for president.
