Crews finally finish repairs to 8th Street bridge over Fountain Creek in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS. Colo. (KRDO) — Nearly a year-and-a-half of construction, waiting, and driver frustration has ended on the 8th Street bridge that crosses Fountain Creek on the city’s southwest side.

The final phase of construction on the 76-year-old bridge happened overnight Tuesday when crews finished applying new pavement markings and returned traffic to normal on all four lanes.

However, completing that work provides drivers and pedestrians with only a little relief because just south of the bridge, one lane in each direction continues to squeeze onto the east side of the street — between KRDO 13 and the Lower Gold Camp Road/Abbot Lane intersection.

Crews continue to replace a water main as part of an overall improvement project along the street between Motor City Drive and Cimarron Street, moving from south to north.

That traffic pattern started several weeks ago, and will shift again in another few weeks when traffic switches to the west side of the street, allowing crews to wok on the east side.

Repairs to the bridge began in June 2025 when crews worked on the east side of the structure; they also removed the old pedestrian bridge in favor of a wider sidewalk between the bridge and the US 24 Frontage Road intersection.

At that intersection, crews also created a dedicated right turn lane from northbound 8th Street to the frontage road.

When crews began working on the west side of the bridge earlier this year, they found that it needed more repairs than they expected; the situation rerquired a crane to lower a new pillar under the bridge.

Officials previously said that crews will place the new water main under the bridge when the project advances to that point.

It’s unclear whether repaving the current construction zone — which officials hoped to do before winter — will happen this late in the season.

The entire project should be completed next spring.
