ST. CHARLES PARISH, Louisiana (WDSU) — An 84-year-old St. Charles Parish man was arrested on Halloween night after allegedly pointing a shotgun at deputies in the Charlestowne subdivision.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, neighbors called authorities with concerns about a person walking around with a gun. Deputies arrived and found Herman Alexander holding a shotgun.
Deputies repeatedly asked Alexander to drop the weapon, but he allegedly pointed the shotgun at them. In response, deputies fired at Alexander, who dropped to the ground but was not hit.
Alexander faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault with a firearm, and resisting an officer.
Neighbors expressed empathy for Alexander after learning about his history of mental health struggles.
“I just felt sorry for the man, and then when I found out who he was, I kinda felt bad for him even more, but I couldn’t go out there myself, someone with a shotgun. But, you know, he was a nice man,” said neighbor Thomas Tumblin.
“We knew the man; he’d been in the neighborhood too about 40 years, so he’s a good person,” said Lynette Lane, another neighbor.
The sheriff’s office added that Alexander was taken to the hospital in May 2026 after what they believed was a mental health episode.
