AVE MARIA, Florida (WBBH) — An Ave Maria man was arrested on October 21 after being accused of shoving someone after a dispute over pickleball.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, the victim told deputies that on October 3 at a pickleball event at the Oasis Club in the Del Webb Community, she got into a disagreement over the format of the event with Steven DeMaio, 73.
The report said that DeMaio had arrived at the event with paperwork for the format he wanted. DeMaio was reportedly upset that his format was dismissed, and when the victim turned her back on DeMaio, he shoved her in the back, causing her to fall into a nearby witness.
DeMaio then grabbed a slow cooker and advanced toward the victim in an aggressive manner, the report said.
On October 21, deputies made contact with DeMaio, who admitted to grabbing the slow cooker but denied pushing the victim or hitting anyone, the report said.
DeMaio was arrested and faces a charge of battery.
