OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (KOCO) — A Kansas State University bus carrying children on a middle school field trip was involved in a crash near Interstate 35 on Tuesday in southeast Oklahoma City.
According to a school counselor on the bus, 24 seventh-grade students from St. John Catholic School in Lawrence, Kansas, were on board when the bus pulled out of a parking lot and was hit by a semi-trailer near an Interstate 35 off-ramp near Southeast 44th Street.
The bus has significant damage to its front end and blocked traffic off the highway. EMSA was called to the scene to make sure everyone was OK, and no injuries were reported.
The students are in Oklahoma for a three-day school trip, according to the school counselor.
“The students are OK. They did amazingly well. So, obviously, very shaken up. The sound, the thing was very startling, but they really stayed calm,” Lauren Yoshinobu said. “It’s unsettling, but they’re doing very well. Amazing group of kids.”
The students stayed the night in Oklahoma City and will visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum before heading to Tulsa for a couple of days. The group on the field trip was going to the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine when the crash happened, and the students visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum on Monday.
Yoshinobu told KOCO 5 that the man driving the bus often drives for Kansas State University athletic teams and brought his bus to use for the field trip. The bus is not owned by the university.
