Local Marine receives plaque at Armed Forces Park
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – A local former Marine was honored Friday and had a plaque revealed for him and his father for their service at the Armed Forces Park.
Families, friends and other retired veterans came together for 80-year-old Sgt. Kenneth Metoyer and his late father, Pfc. Victor Jones.
Metoyer served in the Vietnam War for four years in which he was stationed to Yuma afterwards. Jones served in World War II for two years. Metoyer called the event a surprise and something he’ll never forget.
“The fact that everybody came, all the people that actually came here. It was amazing to me even, you know like I said before, I don’t feel that I deserved it, but I am at the same time glad that they came and I appreciate everybody,” Metoyer said.
While not from Yuma originally, Metoyer is proud to call Yuma home.
“I joined the Marine Corps and then I got stationed here. This is where I met my wife. So this is kind of a special place for me because after I got married, we went back to L.A for a couple of years. Then I came back here to work,” Metoyer said.
Metoyer added he would like to thank his wife for putting it all together and for the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma coming as well.
