PIKESVILLE, Maryland (WBAL) — A calf escaped from Hidden Waters Farm in Pikesville on Wednesday, leading to a chase that ended on the Baltimore Beltway.

Tom Baum, the farm’s owner, said the calf squeezed through a head gate on her enclosure, and farmhands noticed her escape right away.

“She just made her way around the property, we were catching her or trying to catch her, and suddenly she just decides to make a u-turn and went right down toward the beltway in the one area where there is an opening in the state highway fence. And she just went right out there and the rest is history,” Baum said.

Before reaching the highway, the calf wandered through neighbors’ yards, prompting numerous 911 calls. Baltimore County police responded to the scene.

Once on the highway near Greenspring Avenue, police and another farm owner cornered the calf against the Jersey wall and used a rope to capture her. Despite weaving through traffic, no one was hurt during the incident.

“It fortunately did end well, and it could’ve even been much worse, but we’re very happy she’s safe and sound and that everybody was out of harm’s way and it all ended well,” Baum said.

The calf is now recovering in a special corral on a neighboring farm for the next day or so. Baum said she is tired but otherwise unharmed.

“The one thing about a farm that you can count on is there’s always something going on. You just never know, you can’t predict animals always what’s going to happen next,” Baum said.

Baum says they are planning to put a fence around the corral the calf escaped from to prevent this from happening again.
