Prop 435: What to know ahead of the November election
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Yuma County voters will have a say in the county’s future next month as Proposition 435 is one of the measures on the ballot.
From local services to future growth, the decisions made at the ballot box can help shape what Yuma County looks like in the years ahead.
Prop 435 is one of the measures voters are being asked to consider.
“What we do is we adapt to the growth by actually providing more services as we need them,” said Tony Reyes, Yuma County Supervisor for District 4.
Yuma County has grown over the last several decades, but the formula that sets its spending limit dates back to 1979 and 1980.
Reyes and Jonathan Lines, Yuma County Supervisor for District 2, support updating that limit, saying the current formula may eventually make it harder for the county to keep up with growing needs.
“We provide libraries in the Foothills, libraries in Yuma. Most people do not know that library system is the county system. Flood control system is a county issue,” Reyes shared.
They said those services, and others the county provides, depend on having room in the budget to keep up with growth.
Lines said Prop 435 would change how much the county can spend, not how much it collects.
“It is not a tax increase. It only gives us the ability to budget the money that’s already collected,” Lines explained.
Without a change, Reyes said the county could eventually face more limits on how it uses the money it already receives.
“It’s going to get tougher and tougher to spend the money that we already get. If we don’t change the limitation, because it will limit what we can do with the money we have,” Reyes expressed.
