HSOY sees continued influx of kittens
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Humane Society of Yuma (HSOY) continues to see an influx of kittens, even as kitten season typically begins to slow down.
Kitten season usually starts in March and peaks in September, but the Desert Southwest’s warm climate can make it last longer. The shelter continues to receive neonate kittens, newborn kittens just a few weeks old or younger.
“Normally, at this point in the year, we get a reprieve from kitten season. However, it is not slowing down for us at all,” said Hilary Mulherin with HSOY. “I just looked at the number, and it looks like we’ve had 559 neonate kittens come through our kitten ICU in just the last several months…since April 23 alone.”
The shelter is also seeing kittens of all ages.
If you find a litter, HSOY said to wait and watch for the mother unless the kittens appear sick or injured. The mother may be out hunting, Mulherin said. If the mother has not returned after 24 hours, people can take action.
Kittens that look sick or unhealthy should be brought in for help. They may have an upper respiratory infection or another condition and need to be seen.
With kitten season continuing, the shelter says foster homes are especially needed. No experience is necessary; interested people can fill out a foster application online or in person.
The shelter is also accepting donations. A list of its most-needed items is available on the HSOY’s website.
