Palm Springs’ first In-N-Out moves forward after approval from Architectural Review Committee
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – Plans for Palm Springs’ first In-N-Out are one step closer to reality after the design received approval from the city’s Architectural Review Committee.
It was a split 3-2 vote by the committee.
It comes after the Palm Springs Planning Commission delayed its decision on the plans in July, recommending 18 additional conditions.
” Yeah, this is the 3rd or 4th time we’ve seen this project. We’ve been encouraging the design and development team to adhere to some standards that are quite high here in Palm Springs. They have done; they’ve done their best,” said Lance O’Donnell, Chair of the Architectural Review Committee.
There has been a back-and-forth battle on the restaurant, with commissioners and residents arguing the re-designs of the restaurant’s exterior do not go far enough in terms of Palm Springs style architecture.
“I think it was the wrong decision. I think that two of the committee members were very passionate about the importance of architecture here, and they both wanted this project. They want In-N-Out here, but In-N-Out didn’t care to worry about what was important with regard to the architecture, with regard to just making it fit the site and making it something iconic,” said Paul Valentino, a Palm Springs resident.
In-N-Out representatives defended the proposal, saying the restaurant was designed specifically for the site and that no other In-N-Out location is comparable.
The proposed restaurant would be built at 1801 E. Palm Canyon Drive in the Smoke Tree Village Shopping Plaza.
It’s not all said and done yet; it will now move on to the planning commission and possibly to the city council if they need to appeal the construction.
