KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KMBC) — A group of Vietnam veterans from the Kansas City area was in Washington D.C. on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., visiting memorials built in their honor as part of the Heartland Honor Flight.

The trip brought together 93 veterans for a day of remembrance, reflection and time with others who served.

For veterans Ron Sanders and Jim Williamson, the trip was especially meaningful.

The two have been friends since 1980, when they worked together at Fort Leavenworth.

“Being around all these other soldiers is just amazing,” Williamson said.

Williamson said he was honored when his longtime friend asked him to serve as his guardian for the trip.

The veterans also praised the volunteers and organizers who made the day possible.

“Oh, outstanding! They do a great job,” Sanders said.

The group visited several memorials in the nation’s capital, including the World War II Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Now, Kansas City has a chance to give them a special welcome home.

The veterans are expected to return to Kansas City International Airport Wednesday night, with their flight scheduled to land shortly after 8:45 p.m.

The public is invited to KCI to welcome the veterans home.
