Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: Wall Street finished mixed Monday as investors prepared for a busy week of corporate earnings and inflation reports. The Dow rose 0.4%, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% and the Nasdaq fell 0.4%.
Oil prices continued climbing, with Brent crude rising 1.8% to $106.65 a barrel. U.S. bond trading was closed for the Columbus Day holiday and resumes today.
Today’s Focus: Big earnings reports landed before the bell Tuesday, offering a closer look at how consumers and businesses are handling higher borrowing costs. JPMorgan Chase fell short of Wall Street’s profit and revenue expectations, while Wells Fargo beat earnings estimates but missed on revenue. Goldman Sachs reported stronger-than-expected revenue, driven by stock trading, and Citigroup topped both profit and revenue forecasts.
September existing-home sales arrive at 10 a.m. ET, providing an update on purchases of previously owned homes. The report will offer another measure of activity in a market where financing costs remain a concern for buyers.
The latest inflation markers are due out Wednesday, including September’s Consumer Price Index and the Fed’s Beige Book, a collection of reports on business conditions across the country. Together, they will provide new information on prices and economic activity ahead of the Fed’s Oct. 27-28 meeting.
