BIDDEFORD, Maine (WMTW) — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, spent the weekend in Maine campaigning with U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Troy Jackson.
The pair was joined by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, candidate for CD1, to close out the weekend in Biddeford.
All three spoke on a range of issues but focused largely on ICE reform.
“This activity has to stop,” said Pingree. “And ICE has to get out of Maine, and we have to abolish ICE.”
It comes after Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by an ICE agent earlier this year in Biddeford.
“Immigrants aren’t deciding whether you can afford health care, gas or groceries, and immigrants sure as hell aren’t the reason that working people have been getting screwed in this country my whole damn life,” stated Jackson.
Sanders and Jackson held events in Bangor on Saturday and earlier on Sunday in Lewiston.
Sanders largely emphasized Democratic control of the Senate, stating the race between Troy Jackson and Republican Sen. Susan Collins holds incredible importance to a Democratic majority.
“If you want to hold Donald Trump and his disastrous policies accountable, the only way to do that is by electing a Democratic Senate,” added Sanders.
According to Collins’ campaign team, she spent the weekend cheering on UMaine’s hockey team, focusing the efforts of the campaign on Mainers. Rather than, they said, on whom the Democratic Socialists of America want in Washington.
