SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (KTBS) — A community prayer vigil is scheduled Friday evening to honor Sha’Michal Russell, 13, who was killed while shielding his younger sister from gunfire.
The event will focus on comfort, healing, and action following the tragedy. The vigil is set for 6 p.m. at 6725 Buncombe Road in Shreveport.
Sha’Michal was shot and killed Monday night at the Olde Salem Village Apartments. According to his family, the teenager used his body to shield his little sister from bullets while they were playing outside in a shooting that also left a 2-year-old and a 17-year-old injured.
Authorities announced Wednesday that Javieon Abbott, 19, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Russell’s killing. On Thursday he was also charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He is being held at the Caddo Correctional Center on a $1 million bond.
