Dakota Makinen

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (KESQ) – The Betty Ford Center unveiled the next phase of renovations to its campus in Rancho Mirage.

The center hosted a private event on Tuesday as city leaders, supporters, and alumni gathered to get a first look at new renderings of the $40 million plan for the facility. The renovations are part of a larger effort to update the Betty Ford Center and improve the experience for patients and their families.

Phase 2 includes a new resident treatment building with 60 beds and a new dining hall expected to seat 168 people, with a separate family dining room as well as a coffee shop.

The next phase is aimed at expanding resources for those in recovery.

“People who are arriving or may arrive with the same uncertainty or worries or fear that I experienced. But what I also think about is the opportunity that they’ll have to imagine a different future,” said Aakash Davda, an alumnus of the Betty Ford Center.

Construction on Phase 2 is expected to be done in June or September of next year, and the entire transformation project will be fully completed by 2029.

Sheriff’s office investigates after 4 inmates overdose at Kansas jail

EUREKA, Kansas (KAKE) — Authorities are investigating after four inmates, two of whom were found unresponsive, overdosed at a southeast Kansas jail last week.

The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Greenwood County Jail in Eureka. Sheriff Health Samuels said the jail experienced “a serious medical emergency directly caused by the intentional actions of four inmates” who overdosed on an unknown white powder.

“Their deliberate ingestion of the substance resulted in multiple opioid overdoses and created a hazardous situation for jail staff, other inmates, and first responders,” he said.

Initially, two inmates were found unresponsive. But within minutes, a total of four inmates were in critical condition.

Due to the sudden onset and severity of symptoms, Sheriff Samuels said one concern was a possible air-quality issue inside the jail. The jail and courthouse were evacuated.

“Deputies and medical personnel immediately performed life‑saving measures. As treatment progressed, responders identified signs consistent with opioid involvement.”

First responders administered Narcan to the four inmates, and their conditions were stabilized. The scene was declared stable about two hours after the call for EMS.

Samuels said, “The inmates’ intentional introduction of the substance forced staff and first responders to enter a potentially contaminated environment, placing them at unnecessary risk.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating how the drug was brought into the jail. The sheriff said criminal charges are expected.

Maryland utilities seek to return $160M in tax refunds to customers

BALTIMORE, Maryland (WMAR) — BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco are seeking regulatory approval to return approximately $160 million in tax refund benefits to Maryland customers.

The proposed benefits stem from a recent Maryland court decision involving state taxes previously collected from utilities. As a result of that decision, the state is expected to return tax overpayments and related interest to utilities. BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco say they are working to ensure their portion of those funds is passed along to customers.

The total expected benefit breaks down as approximately $110 million for BGE customers, $20 million for Delmarva Power customers and $30 million for Pepco customers.

The move is pending collaboration with the State of Maryland and will be reviewed by the Public Service Commission. The companies will work through the regulatory process with Maryland leaders and the PSC to determine the timing, structure and customer allocation of the refund benefits.

“We know many Maryland families and businesses are feeling pressure from higher energy costs, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help,” Valencia McClure, Exelon SVP of Governmental, Regulatory and External Affairs, said.

“Providing these tax savings to customers is another example of The Exelon Promise in action, taking practical steps today to provide relief, protect customers and work with policymakers and regulators on long-term solutions that keep energy safe, reliable and affordable,” McClure said.

Each utility will provide additional customer information after the regulatory process determines how and when the benefits will appear on customer bills. Customers do not need to take any action at this time.

RILEY COUNTY, Kansas (KAKE) — A Kansas State University student suffered critical injuries after jumping from a bridge Friday night in an attempt to avoid being struck by a swerving vehicle in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched at 8:44 p.m. to a multi-vehicle crash on Highway K-18 near the East Riley Avenue off-ramp in Ogden. A total of four vehicles were involved in the crash.

Upon arrival, witnesses reported that a woman standing on the shoulder jumped from the bridge to avoid being hit by a vehicle swerving to avoid debris. She fell approximately 70 feet and sustained “major injuries.”

The nearby Union Pacific Railroad line was briefly closed while crews searched for the woman.

EMS and fire searched for the patient and provided aid before the Manhattan Fire Department was called in to assist, using high-angle rescue equipment to lift the woman from the area below the bridge, police wrote.

She was transported to a local hospital before being transported to Topeka in critical condition for additional treatment. No other injuries were reported.

“Manhattan Fire Department is grateful for the coordinated response by all agencies involved,” MFD Battalion Chief Keith Habbart said. “The quick thinking, teamwork, and professionalism shown by responders helped ensure the patient could be rescued and transported for further care.”

A GoFundMe identified the woman as Kyra Kinnison, a junior at K-State. A friend said Kyra suffered multiple fractures, “but luckily there are no other injuries and she is recovering.”

“She fell approximately 70 feet and sustained fractures to her pelvis and back,” the GoFundMe says. “She is currently being hospitalized but she is going to be okay!”

South Colorado Springs homeowner deals with buildup of sewer gas from nearby wastewater project

Scott Harrison

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — A south side resident contacted KRDO13’s The Road Warrior about a smelly situation that most of us haven’t experienced.

A buildup of sewer gas inside his home.

Richard Jenkins lives in the 300 block of East Las Vegas Street and said that he’s been dealing with the problem since Labor Day weekend.

That’s when two elderly relatives living with him, both with health issues, called him at work to alert him; when he came home, they said the stench forced them to sit outside on the front porch.

“We opened the windows and used fans to vent the gas,” Jenkins recalled.

When crews from Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) arrived, he continued, they told him that one of the roof vents wasn’t working properly because the base was rotted.

“I paid $250 of my own money to replace it,” Jenkins said. “The smell went away for a week, but came back stronger than ever.”

Crews conducted two smoke tests, he explained, to get a detailed look at how the gas was venting out; sensors also detected high levels of sewer gas outside.

In a response to The Road Warrior last week, CSU said that the problem was connected to an increase in the flow of a bypass pumping operation in an ongoing wastewater project several blocks east of the home.

The sewer gas decreased once crews reduced the bypass flow, CSU said.

According to CSU, crews excavated the sewer lines outside the home, installed a backflow valve, and replaced a valve under the kitchen sink that blocks sewer gas from flowing out.

Since then, Jenkins said that the situation is “90% better.”

Mass shooting in Detroit tied to ‘cellphone’ dispute, community details violence

By Faraz Javed, Marlon Falconer, Brian Schwartz

DETROIT, Michigan (WXYZ) — Three people are dead and four others were injured after a fight turned deadly at a home on Detroit’s west side near Prest Street and Eaton Avenue.

Community Violence Intervention leaders say the dispute may have started over a cellphone.

Detroit police say a ShotSpotter alert came in just after 7:20 a.m. Sunday, followed by a 911 call. Officers arrived within four minutes and found three men with fatal gunshot wounds. Four other victims — two men and two women — were taken to hospitals privately with non-life-threatening injuries.

Community Violence Intervention leader Tamara Smith said the outcome of the dispute was preventable.

“This is a mass shooting that has occurred over something simple: a cellphone. We have three fatalities, four non-fatal injuries, but a total of seven because of a cellphone,” Smith said.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison described how the violence unfolded.

“A fight occurred, an altercation occurred and as a result, individuals decided to settle it with gun violence,” Bettison said.

One of the victims has been identified by family as 45-year-old Ansley Harris Jr. His cousin, Janelle Harris, said she had seen him just days before he was killed.

“I love him. You need anything, he was like, he good,” Janelle Harris said.

Janelle Harris said the family is committed to honoring him.

“Ansley, we love you. And we’re going to send you away, beautiful,” she said.

Neighbors say trouble had been brewing at the home before Sunday’s shooting. A resident, who asked to be identified only as Alex and not to be shown on camera out of fear of retaliation, described what he had observed in the days leading up to the shooting.

“Early morning, loud noise, lots of cars, lots of people coming in and out, a lot of fighting,” he said.

Alex said the situation had been escalating for at least two days and that neighbors had already contacted authorities.

“The last two days, it’s been an issue and a lot of us have called,” Alex said.

During a press conference, Bettison said investigators believe the home was operating as an after-hours location, telling reporters to imagine a strip club. He said the address had a history of calls for service.

“Since the beginning of this year, we have had seven calls for service to this address. I will let you know that I also had an investigation into this address as well,” the chief said.

Alex said he was sitting on his porch Sunday morning when he heard the situation escalating before the shooting began.

“I heard screaming between a number of women, it sounded like, and then louder, louder and then it became threats — so I’m gonna kill you, I’m gonna shoot you, this and that,” he said.

Alex said he then heard approximately 12 gunshots fired in rapid succession.

“I heard maybe 12. It was one after the other real quick,” he said.

Smith said the loss of life was unnecessary.

“Physical violence happens. Gun violence does not have to show up. This could have been handled in a completely different way when people could have went home,” Smith said.

Police say they have leads but do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

New Mexico police say school shooter is 13-year-old student

HOBBS, New Mexico (KOAT) — Hobbs Police Chief James Jones briefed the public on Sunday, addressing the shooting of a teacher at Highland Middle School on Friday in Hobbs, New Mexico.

At 11:39 a.m., officers responded to Highland Middle School after an initial report of a stabbing was updated to a possible shooting, Jones said. Two officers arrived in less than a minute, and Highland and Coronado middle schools were placed on lockdown.

Authorities said teacher Kelly Matthews was shot by a student outside the rear doors of a building. The student had been inside the school then exited. As Matthews encountered the juvenile, the student started to fire. Police said the suspect fled east toward a residential area.

A blade was also found near the scene. EMS took Matthews to a Hobbs hospital within minutes, and he was later transferred to Lubbock.

Officers established a perimeter around both schools. Statements from the victim helped authorities identify the suspect as a white male wearing a black hoodie, black pants and a long white shirt.

Authorities located him moments later, but he began running from officers.

The middle student has been charged with aggravated assault and battery of a school personnel, unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon and shooting threats, and evading law enforcement, among other charges.

Officials said the motive is still unclear, and they have not determined if Matthews was a pre-identified target. They said, at this time, there has been no established history of criminal offenses with this student.

Officials said they know how the student obtained the firearm but said they are withholding that information at this time. No criminal charges have been pursued against the parents at this time.

Jones said there would be a heightened police presence at the school over the next several days, and Superintendent Gene Strickland said school would resume on Monday.

“We continue to pray for [Kelly’s] recovery,” said Jones.

California man pleads no contest after shooting left 17-year-old blind in one eye

By Ricardo Tovar

SEASIDE, California (KSBW) — A Seaside man pleaded no contest in connection with a shooting that left a teenager permanently blind in one eye, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni said.

Reginald Leon Williams, 23, pleaded no contest to one count of mayhem, admitted a firearm enhancement and admitted to a prior strike conviction for a shooting he committed in Seaside in March 2025, according to Pacioni.

Williams will receive 20 years in prison at his sentencing on October 28, 2026, Pacioni said.

On March 2, 2025, Williams learned about planned one-on-one fights between minors in Seaside. He told a fellow gang member, who was 16 years old, that he would attend and back up the teens affiliated with his gang.

Pacioni said about 20 people showed up for the fights at Beta Park later that day. After the one-on-one fights, a group fight broke out among the attendees.

Williams arrived during the group fight in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend. He exited the vehicle to participate in the fight and returned to the vehicle a few minutes later, according to Pacioni.

“Williams’ girlfriend drove about 200 feet away from the group fight, and Williams ordered her to stop the vehicle. Williams then exited and fired four shots at the fight attendees who remained behind at Beta Park,” Pacioni said.

One of the gunshots struck a 17-year-old boy in the head. He was airlifted to Stanford, where he was hospitalized for more than a month and underwent multiple surgeries.

The shooting left the teenager permanently blind in one eye, according to Pacioni.

Pacioni added that Williams rented a motel room in Monterey after the shooting. Less than 24 hours later, authorities identified his vehicle using license plate reader cameras.

Authorities located his vehicle at the motel and searched his room, where they found the firearm used in the shooting, according to Pacioni.

“Williams has a prior juvenile strike adjudication for attempted armed carjacking and prior felony convictions for attempted oral copulation of a minor and firearm possession,” Pacioni said.
