Dana Adobe Heritage Day brings Nipomo history to life this weekend

Dave Alley

NIPOMO, Calif. (KEYT) – Central Coast history will come alive this weekend in Nipomo during the annual Dana Adobe Heritage Day.

The event will take place Saturday at the Dana Adobe, a California State Historical Landmark, giving visitors an opportunity to step back in time and learn more about the history, culture and traditions of early Nipomo and 19th-century coastal California.

Heritage Day will feature live historical reenactments, demonstrations and guided tours of the historic site.

“We try to get a lot of living historians that reenact the era, which is the late Rancho period and early California from about 1840 to about 1860,” Dana Adobe docent and Heritage Day coordinator Terry Handy said. “All these people, we come here and celebrate what it was like to to live here, and kind of celebrate the Dana Adobe and the Rancho and other groups that were in the area, whether it was Chumash, or people going through or gold miners or whatever. We try to simulate that for the day and have a lot of fun doing it.”

Visitors can also enjoy live music, dancing performances and a variety of family-friendly activities.

“People can come and they can watch dancers and listen to some music and talk to the re-enactors and see some crafts being done,” said Handy. “We have a full-on blacksmith who will be here. There will be all sorts of food and all sorts of games and activities for children that are period for the era. We just have a great time together and celebrating Nipomo and the Central Coast.”

Organizers explain the annual event provides the community with an engaging way to experience local history while learning about the people and traditions that helped shape the region.

“It’s a time where they can make history come alive a little bit,” said Handy. “It just gives us a great opportunity to come together and have a great time and learn some history as well.”

Dana Adobe Heritage Day runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 12.

Admission for adults has been reduced this year to $5, while children of all ages can attend for free.

“We wanted to lower the price and give everybody an opportunity to come out and have a great time,” said Handy. “We’re going to have some non-historic vendors here as well, and all sorts of food, so come out and celebrate and just have a have a great day here in beautiful Nipomo.”

Rigby veterans honor 9-11 with solemn ceremony

David Pace

RIGBY, Idaho (KIFI) – Rigby’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) lined up Friday to pay tribute to the heroes who died on September 11, 2001, at Ground Zero in New York City.

The veterans, from VFW Post #1004, shared the significance of the event in American history on the 25th anniversary of 9-11 at South Rigby Park.

“9-11 holds a special spot for me because I didn’t know anybody there. But some similar things happened in El Salvador when I was there,” said Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1004 Commander Jim Stringham. “It always kind of gets to me that, you know, the United States is not invulnerable from an attack.”

A bagpiper filled the air with the stirring notes of ‘Amazing Grace.’

Afterward, an honor guard of former U.S. armed service members presented a rifle salute in tribute to the lives lost that fateful day.

“We need to keep America strong. We need to keep the love and kindness that our country has provided not only the citizens, but many others in the world as well,” said Ron Sathre, from American Legion Post 20.

The veterans held a moment of silence before solemnly striking a ship’s bell eight times to commemorate the attacks.

Mizzou-KU rivalry brings Tiger fans out across Columbia despite road game

Euphenie Andre

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Although the Mizzou-Kansas rivalry game is being played in Lawrence on Friday night, Tiger fans are making game day a big event in Columbia.

Some fans are feeling especially confident about the Tigers’ chances, telling ABC 17 News they expect Mizzou to win 50-0.

At My House Sports Bar in downtown Columbia, the excitement started well before kickoff. When the doors opened at 3 p.m., a line of fans wrapped around the corner, with some waiting more than an hour to get inside.

MU senior Elizabeth Salmon was among the hundreds who lined up early.

“Hello, school spirit,” Salmon said. “We need a table. We’re going to ride all day. I got to work at 9, too, so I am going to see this game and I’m going to go.”

The support for Mizzou is not limited to Columbia.

According to the Mizzou Alumni Association, more than a dozen watch parties are planned across the country Friday night, including in New York City, Chicago and Nashville.

In Mid-Missouri, Tiger fans gathered at Trail Stop Brewery, where the Boone County Mizzou Alumni Association held its local watch party. Wally Pfeffer, treasurer for the Boone County Mizzou Alumni Association, said the group had 80 people registered for its first watch party of the season.

“We’re going to have a good crowd,” Pfeffer said.

For local bars, football season can mean a boost in business.

Nicci Vehovc, who has worked at Booches for several years, said the atmosphere during football season is noticeably different when she is working behind the scenes.

“Being in the business and working it is a little different compared to being just an observer and somebody that’s a customer,” Vehovc said.

She pointed to last year’s Mizzou-Kansas game, when the Tigers hosted the Jayhawks in Columbia. Vehovc said Booches was packed.

“It’s really lively and fun and exciting, and I know how strongly people feel about Kansas versus Mizzou,” she said. “So it’s electric, I guess you could say.”

Vehovc said it was also exciting to see fans from both sides come together.

“It was really cool to see everyone come out. Whether you’re from Kansas or you’re from Mizzou, they all got along,” she said.

Booches was also busy ahead of Mizzou’s season opener last week. Vehovc said the biggest crowds often arrive in the hours leading up to kickoff.

“It starts slow most of the time with the 7 p.m. game, but then you really don’t even realize, working it, how quickly people just start to pile in,” she said. “The next thing you know, the building is full and it is loud.”

The Mizzou Alumni Association said it hopes to host more watch parties throughout the football season. Fans can find information about upcoming Mizzou Alumni Association events here.

One dead in crash in the Foothills

Dillon Fuhrman

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is investigating a crash which left one person dead.

In a press release, the crash happened at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of S. Frontage Road and S. Avenue 10E in the Foothills.

YPD said a white 2017 Chevy Silverado, driven by a 55-year-old man, was attempting to turn onto S. Frontage Road when it crashed into a silver 2013 Honda Accord.

As a result of the crash, YPD said the driver of the Accord, identified as a 43-year-old man, who was the only person in the vehicle, suffered injuries, and was pronounced dead at Onvida Health.

While there were no other injuries reported, and while neither speed nor alcohol appeared to have factored in the crash, the investigation is ongoing.

Lawsuit over Jefferson City hotel’s tax records put on hold

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The lawsuit Jefferson City filed against the owner of the Quality Inn earlier this summer has been put on pause.

Court documents in previous reporting say the city sued DEAA Hospitality and Paresh Patel after the city requested records regarding its lodging tax and did not receive them by the June 1 deadline. The city also requested state tax returns for 2024 and 2025.

Nathan Nickolaus, whose law firm is representing the city, told ABC 17 News in a Friday message that the city received those records.

“Yes, we have now received data from the hotelier,” Nickolaus wrote. “We are examining what we have to see if it is complete.  We will hold off on further action pending that determination.  We take compliance with these audits seriously so that everyone is paying their fair share.”

Imperial Valley reflects on 9/11

Jessamyn Dodd

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA) – 25 years later, flags across the Imperial Valley are lowered to half-staff in honor of the first responders, civilians, and everyday heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Local first responders are taking the time Friday to remember the men and women who ran toward danger and never came home.

For El Centro firefighters, it is a stark reminder of what it takes to answer the call and how they continue to honor the fallen.

“We’re getting on the engine, responding to every call, whatever comes in, and that’s how we honor the fallen. We keep their memory alive by continuing to do what they did day in and day out,” El Centro Fire Department Acting Captain and Engineer Mathew Zinn told Channel 11.

“First and foremost in any law enforcement or first responder field, I think it takes heart,” he said.

The community will honor first responders at the 9/11 stair climb on Saturday at the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds.

“It’s the 13th annual anniversary of our local stair climb,” Zinn said. Zinn also serves on the 9/11 Stair Climb Committee.

Check-in begins at 6 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 7:40 p.m.

“We put it together 13 years ago to honor 9/11 in our own way that we do here in the Imperial Valley.

For local firefighters, this anniversary is about remembering the past and making sure that future generations never forget the sacrifice that was made 25 years ago.
