MCCALLA, Alabama (WVTM) — Representatives of the AI Data Center Revolt Tour visited Alabama to highlight the impact of data centers on rural communities and encourage residents to share their stories and make their voices heard.

“Rural America is under attack by big tech. They want us. They want our land. They they don’t care about us,” said Kathy Latham, Texas state director of Humans First.

Organizers said they hope the event raises awareness about the level of control communities have over this technology and its downstream effects.

“Hopefully people have a renewed sense of urgency as it concerns the development of AI and data centers in communities. You know, this is potentially going to be a deeply transformative technology. The unfortunate thing is, is that as it is being built out and as it is being kind of rolled out into the community is causing a lot of negative effects, both directly at the facilities and the surrounding areas there, but also in the people that are using it,” said Joseph Baker, a co-organizer of the event.

Terri Michal, a vocal opponent of data centers, has previously been removed from a Birmingham City Council meeting during a dispute over public comment rules after repeatedly raising concerns about data center projects. She shared her hopes for community involvement.

“I need them to to get educated. You’re going to have, you know, people don’t have to know everything about everything because this is a complicated issue. But they need to find trusted sources, and they need to keep themselves in them so that they can come and stand and be counted at the city council and at things like this, so that hopefully we can start to make a difference,” Michal said.

SAVANNAH, Georgia (WJCL) — Amy Malavich, a 17-year-old Make-A-Wish recipient from northeast Massachusetts, fulfilled her dream at Grayson Stadium in Savannah by partnering with the Savannah Bananas to promote kindness through their Catch Kindness initiative.

Malavich, who lives with MPS 1, a rare enzyme disorder affecting organs, bones, and tissue, has been a devoted fan of Banana Ball for years, traveling across the country with her family to watch the Party Animals play. When Make-A-Wish asked her to choose her wish, she decided to focus on giving back.

“You know, anyone can go on a trip. So I just wanted to have something with a meaningful impact instead of just something like, you go away for a week and you have a nice vacation, but you don’t really get anything out of it. Whereas this kind of had it impact,” Malavich said.

Her wish led to a collaboration with Party Animals player Bronson “Bronny” Balholm and the Catch Kindness initiative, which encourages fans and players to recognize, celebrate, and spread acts of kindness in their communities.

“You know, you can wish for whatever you want. And she decided a wish to help make a better world. Help promote kindness. Help spread kindness. That’s. Pretty dang beautiful, if you ask me,” Balholm said.

On Saturday, Malavich spent time with Balholm and the Party Animals, exchanging gifts, taking photos, and handing out roses to the crowd. Each rose carried kind messages written by Malavich and the players.

“Don’t be afraid to be you. Your smile is contagious. Give someone a hug tonight. Make someone smile today. Trust the process. Everything happens for a reason,” Malavich said.

Her mother, Jenny Malavich, shared how Amy had been planning her wish for years.

“She’s been trying to figure out what she wanted to do for a couple of years now. And, when she finally had the opportunity, she said she just wanted to give back,” Jenny Malavich, Amy’s mother, said.

Amy said Saturday was a chance to experience something she has loved for years and hopes the kindness she helped spread will continue long after the stadium lights dim.

Amy’s family expressed their gratitude to the Savannah Bananas organization for making her wish come true.

Vandalism reported throughout downtown Idaho Falls over the weekend

Danielle Mullenix

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – Several downtown Idaho Falls businesses and residents are reporting damage following what appears to be a series of vandalism incidents over the weekend.

Photos and reports shared on social media show shattered business windows, destroyed potted plants scattered across sidewalks, and damaged streetlights in different areas of downtown. Some of the businesses affected include Great Harvest, Idaho Mountain Trade, Medical Recovery Services,  Smith Driscoll & Associates, and others. Now, several business owners and managers are seeking answers on what caused the downtown disturbance.

“It’s just frustrating,” Skyler Berry said, the marketing manager of Great Harvest Bakery and Cafe. The beloved spot suffered extensive damage to its potted plants outside the front doors. “We pay a lot of money to have Four Seasons potted…. I just hope that they are found, apologize, and make it right. They did a lot more damage to other downtown businesses, and so it’s more just hard to see your neighbors and, you know, downtown get destroyed.”

Daniel Bonney, manager of Idaho Mountain Trading, described the shock of seeing his store’s window displayed shattered as disappointing and deeply upsetting.

“I got a picture of it right away, and my stomach immediately was sick and very, very upset, as you can imagine,” Bonney said. “But we’ve been through this before. Unfortunately. And it would be nice if the person could pay for the damages, since this is, I think, the ninth broken window we’ve had since we’ve moved into this building.”

The full extent of the damage around downtown Idaho Falls is still unknown.

Local News 8 is working to confirm the official reports filed with the Idaho Falls Police Department, including when they can begin an active investigation into the damage and locate a suspect.

See Something? Say Something.

Jessica Clements with the Idaho Falls Police Department strongly encourages any downtown business owners with damage – regardless of extent – to file a report (services for filing online can be found here). Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity downtown over the weekend—or who has security camera footage, photographs, or other information that could help identify who may be responsible—is encouraged to report it to the Idaho Falls Police Department. Security camera footage, Clements emphasized, could help investigators quickly identify a suspect in the weekend’s vandalism.

The Idaho Falls Police Department’s non-emergency dispatch number is 208-529-1200.

Anyone witnessing a crime in progress or an emergency should call 911.

Local News 8 will continue working to learn more about the reported vandalism and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

Anthropic researcher quits over AI fears as youth group in the US sounds alarm

OMAHA, Nebraska (KETV) — Gen Zs across the country are starting to speak out about the potential harms of artificial intelligence and the way it affects young people.

Just a few days ago, an Anthropic researcher quit over AI fears, warning it could have deadly consequences.

He said, “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

“Seeing these headlines that AI poses a risk of ending humanity and posing an extinction threat is horrifying,” Maddie Freeman, NoSo Collection Collective founder, said.

NoSo is a youth-run nonprofit fighting to help youth reclaim their control over technology.

Data shows 67% of kids say they’ve used an AI chatbot.

“We really want you to be more critical about the systems are engaging with and also know that, you know, the AI future is not an inevitable future, but it’s something that giant billion-dollar companies are pushing and really want us to feel kind of powerless to,” Freeman said.

Freeman said AI is making it hard for young professionals trying to break into the workforce.

“Now every job posting has hundreds and maybe thousands of applicants. And a lot of times, AI is the thing sorting through that pool. So AI has a lot of bias,” Freeman said.

She said AI is also stunting kids’ educational growth; some of them are now outsourcing all their thinking to AI systems instead of using it to help them learn.

“That has really negative impacts on our way of actually learning and being able to ingest content. And then use that knowledge critically. And then the other kind of harm that we saw is that people feel like there’s kind of this loss of creativity and agency,” Freeman said.

Freeman also said we’re losing control over whether or not we want AI to impact our lives, and change needs to happen now.

“I personally don’t necessarily think we fully can see yet how much these technologies are impacting us,” Freeman said.

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (WYFF) — Officers say an assault at a Greenville, South Carolina, restaurant led multiple people being detained, including the boyfriend of late actress Hayden Panettiere and his brother on Saturday night.

When police arrived, they located and detained several people involved in the altercation. Officers say two of those people were Brian Hickerson and Zachary Hickerson.

Officials say that investigators determined Zachary Hickerson was highly intoxicated and had begun yelling profanities in public.

Due to this, Zachary Hickerson was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and transported to the Greenville County Detention Center. He has since bonded out after receiving a personal recognizance bond of $257.50.

Officers say Brian Hickerson was released from the scene and was not charged.

World-record 400-foot Cuban sandwich claimed in Palm City

By Allen Cone

PALM CITY, Florida (WPBF) — Two metro areas in Florida — Tampa and Miami — boast they have the best Cuban sandwich, but Palm City in Martin County now claims to have built the world’s longest one.

Community members produced a 400-foot-long sandwich at Justin Wilson Memorial Park on Sandpiper Way in Palm City. The previous record was 365 feet, set in Tampa in 2024.

The event, called “Bite Into History: The Longest Cuban Sandwich Ever Made,” was a joint effort of Old Havana Cafe at 2225 SE Ocean Blvd. and the nonprofit House of Hope, which serves Martin County.

Organizers said it was intended to call attention to issues of food insecurity in the area, foster community spirit and celebrate Hispanic heritage.

Members of the public could purchase sandwiches.

The event’s presenting sponsor, the Doris M. Carter Family Foundation, pledged to double every donor’s impact in the community by matching every donation made through the event up to $15,000.

Founded in 1984, House of Hope is a nonprofit organization that empowers Martin County residents to overcome hunger and hardship. House of Hope touches the lives of more than 30,000 people each month, helping with basic needs such as food, clothing, furniture, financial assistance, as well as longer-term case management services.

The organization has service centers in Stuart, Hobe Sound, Indiantown and Jensen Beach, with thrift stores in Stuart, Hobe Sound and Indiantown.

House of Hope also operates the Growing Hope Farm in Palm City and several nutrition gardens that provide sustainable sources of fresh produce for clients as well as nutrition education and vocational opportunities to the community.

A Cuban sandwich, or a cubano, is ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and sometimes salami on Cuban bread.

There is a rivalry between Tampa and Miami over which city claims the sandwich as its own. In 2012, the Tampa City Council named it the city’s official “signature sandwich.

Around the 1900s, cafes in Ybor City and nearby West Tampa sold the sandwiches to immigrant workers who were part of the cigar factories.

By the 1960s, Cuban sandwiches were common in Miami with a large influx of Cuban residents after Fidel Castro’s 1959 rise to power in their native land.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KMBC) — Ahead of the season opener at home against the Denver Broncos, some Kansas City Chiefs fans got in line to park and tailgate as early as 29 hours prior.

The game kicks off on KMBC 9 on Monday at 7:15 p.m., but tailgaters arrived to line up at the gate as early as 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

They brought tents, inflatable mattresses, generators, televisions, grills, and everything else needed to keep spirits up before the gates open to the parking lots at 3 p.m. Monday.

“I brought up my entire camping system. I have five kids at home, so my poor wife, who is watching all my children to allow me this opportunity,” Kevin McGuire said.

McGuire was one of the first fans to line up, a bucket-list item for him that came from his dad’s love of Chiefs tailgating. A six-year season ticket holder, it’s the first time he’s lined up this early.

“Definitely have a lot of food. Drinks. Entertainment. I brought a book. I’m probably not going to read it, but I brought it just in case. And obviously, you know, some adult beverages that are going to last us until tomorrow for sure,” McGuire said.

Some fans explained the early line is a tradition and spent Sunday night inviting other fans to enjoy food and football ahead of tomorrow’s game.

“The sleep is not the important thing. It’s the atmosphere. It’s the friends. It’s a family,” one fan said.

Although waiting in line is fun for many superfans, the real atmosphere comes on Monday.

“I think the energy of the crowd is going to keep me going, and the tailgating is going to keep me going. I obviously took tomorrow off. I’m not calling in sick tomorrow, just so everybody knows,” McGuire said.

Coach arrested after phone found recording students in locker room, police say

TRACY, California (KCRA) — Tracy High School’s football coach, Jeffrey Pribble, was arrested on Friday after his phone was found recording students in a locker room at a local high school, the Tracy Police Department said.

Pribble, 48, is a teacher and the head coach of varsity football for Tracy High School. He began coaching for Tracy High School in 2004, according to the Tracy Press. Pribble became head coach in 2021.

Police said students discovered a cell phone recording them while changing in an on-campus locker room. The students reported it to a teacher, and police were contacted by a concerned parent.

“When the student and other classmates found the cellphone, they were able to pause the recording before deleting it and then turning the phone over to a staff member,” Kaylin Heefner, a spokesperson for the police department, said.

School resource officers and detectives investigated and found the phone belonged to Pribble, the department said. He was arrested on Friday and Tracy Unified School District has placed him on leave pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigations.

KCRA 3 attempted to contact Pribble, but calls went directly to voicemail. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney who could comment on his behalf or whether he remained in custody.

A student who asked not to be identified said he saw Pribble nearly every day and had previously been encouraged by the coach to join the football team.

“He was trying to get me to join football, but that’s not really my thing,” the student said. “I see him every day almost.”

The student described the arrest as a shock.

Parents Brittney Plummer and Ryann Carlson said the allegations raised concerns about privacy and the trust families place in teachers and coaches.

“That’s supposed to be their privacy,” Carlson said, referring to students changing inside a locker room.

Plummer said students are particularly vulnerable in that setting.

“The teachers are supposed to do their job and not do inappropriate stuff with the kids,” Plummer said. “It’s scary. They’re vulnerable at that point.”

In a statement to KCRA, the school district said it was aware an employee was arrested Friday on campus and that the district is fully cooperating with law enforcement. However, because this is a criminal matter, the district said it could not provide any further details on the allegations.

In a letter sent to Tracy High School families, the district said it would take any and all necessary actions to protect students.

“We understand that this news may raise serious concerns in the District community,” the letter reads. “The District too is concerned about the well-being of its students and staff and is committed to holding its employees to the highest professional and ethical standards.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact Detective Brian Cockey at Brian.Cockey@TracyPD.com or 209-831-6602 or Detective Joseph Bourassa at Joseph.Bourassa@TracyPD.com or 209-831-6969.

Carmel-by-the-Sea adopts street addresses for first time in history

By Jazmon DeJarnette

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, California (KSBW) — Carmel-by-the-Sea has officially adopted street addresses for the first time in its history, ending over 100 years of relying on landmarks and intersections to identify locations.

The change became official this morning when the city’s new address, 662 Monte Verde Street, was installed at City Hall.

Residents and businesses are now required to display their new numbers within six months.

“The primary driver for that was public safety,” said Marisa Bermudez, Acting Assistant City Administrator for the City of Carmel, “So instead of calling dispatcher 911 and telling them I live on the third house from such and such corner, this is much easier.”

Property owners have received official notices detailing their new addresses and the requirements for posting them.

“It will say, ‘Dear Property Owner, your new address is, you know, 123 Main Street or 662 Monte Verde Street, Carmel-by-the-Sea, 93921,’” said Emily Garay, Administrative Analyst for the City of Carmel, “And it’ll just have some basic information, the requirements, which is to post your number, minimum four inches in height, half-inch width.”

While the primary reason for the change is safety, the new system also allows packages to be delivered directly to homes and businesses.

However, regular mail will continue to be delivered to the post office.

“That’s why, you know, our slogan for this is ‘new numbers, same traditions,’” said Garay, “So we’ll get numbers, but the tradition to go pick up your mail will continue down at the post office.”

For many residents, the post office remains an important social hub.

“It’s important to have the social interaction here and especially a lot of the retired folks,” said Patrick Kraft, a resident, “I mean, this is important to stay in touch with each other.”

Kairi Meyer, another resident added, “I like being able to come down to mail, do my shopping. I’m going to the farmer’s market today, so I enjoy having an excuse to come out of the house.”

The city used its existing street layout to determine the new addresses.

For example, homes between First and Second Avenue now have addresses starting with a 1.

“That’s kind of how it works, at least going north to south,” the official said. “And then going east to west, we just said, well, why don’t we just make the ocean zero and then every couple of blocks, let’s change the first digit.” said Robert Delves, Councilmember for the City of Carmel.

However, numbering some parts of Carmel proved challenging.

“If you’ve been to downtown Carmel, you know that it’s just full of back alleys and places to wander,” said Delves, “And getting back in there and finding all the front doors and figuring out what number to put on those front doors was a challenge.”

The new addresses are already integrated into Google Maps, and other mapping services are in the process of adding them.

“UPS, FedEx, and DHL have already begun to integrate into their systems as well,” said Garay, “We’ve been communicating with our utility service providers, which is, you know, CALAM, PG&E, GreenWaste. And they’re hard at work integrating the information as well.”

Residents expressed optimism about the change.

“I think it’s going to be fine,” said Meyer, “I think anyone who’s really worried about it is just maybe overreacting a little bit. But it’s going to be fine. Everything’s going to be okay.”

Kraft encouraged others to embrace the change, saying, “You should embrace this idea. It’ll make your life a lot more convenient.”
