FORT SMITH, Ark. (KHBS, KHOG) — Law enforcement released bodycam video from an incident in which a driver was shot and killed after shooting and injuring a Fort Smith police officer.
In May, Officer Kyle Newman approached Joshua Keller’s truck after it crashed into a ditch near the amphitheater, according to the Fort Smith Police Department.
The department said Newman then began investigating Keller for driving while intoxicated. Police said Keller became argumentative, got back in his truck, and attempted to drive away. Authorities said Keller then shot Newman in the neck as the officer tried to detain him outside the truck.
Fort Smith police said Newman fired his gun as he fell to the ground. A nearby officer heard the gunfire, reported it to dispatch, and then fired at Keller’s truck before helping Newman.
Keller sped away at up to 110 miles per hour and intentionally drove the wrong way on Interstate 540. One officer rammed his patrol vehicle into Keller’s truck to stop him.
Police officers then fired shots at Keller, killing him.
“Had Officer Tabor and Officer Grayham not shot Keller at the end of the pursuit, I could just as easily been writing a letter about the homicide of an FSPD Officer or a citizen driving northbound on I-540,” Prosecutor Daniel Shue wrote in a letter announcing his decision that police were justified in their use of deadly force.
