Brent crude jumped more than 6% to settle at $107.63 a barrel, while U.S. crude settled above $100 a barrel. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to about 4.95%.
Treasury bought back $5.19 billion of 10- to 20-year securities Thursday, after announcing a maximum purchase of $6 billion. Bonds remained under pressure following the operation, with some investors having expected a larger intervention.
Producer prices rose 0.4% in August, matching expectations, and 5.4% from a year earlier, slightly above forecasts. Higher producer prices can eventually translate into higher prices for consumers as businesses pass along some of those increases.
