El Paso police seek help finding missing man

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Monday, the El Paso Police Department asked for the public’s help in finding a missing 64-year-old man.

Police said Kit Allen McKenzie was last seen July 30 at the 12400 block of Tierra Arena at 4:30 p.m. That’s in a neighborhood behind a Walmart off Joe Battle Boulevard and Montana Avenue.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue t-shirt and grey tennis shoes.

Police noted McKenzie has missing teeth.

Arroyo Grande business raises money for local cancer patients

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (KEYT) – A Arroyo Grande communications equipment business held an annual fundraiser on Monday to help benefit patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center.

Beginning at 10 a.m., Rugged Radios went live with its popular “Pink Radio Day,” a yearly promotion that has helped raised thousands of dollars to benefit the annual Day of Hope, a community-based fundraiser that supports Mission Hope Cancer Center.

“We’re giving back,” said Greg Cottrell, Rugged Radios Founder and CEO. “This is the day that we sell a special pink radio and this year we added a pink headset. We only do this once a year because all the proceeds to this go to Mission Hope Cancer Center. It’s our time to do a lot of good for a lot of people.”

Helping kick off the event was a big gathering of people associated with Mission Hope Cancer Center, including physicians, Dignity Health officials, as well as several patients and their family members.

“It’s great to see the support from the community,” said Mission Hope patient Gilbert Rea. “It is amazing how much these phones have been ringing. People who are calling are supporting people like me that are cancer survivors.”

Headquartered in Arroyo Grande, Rugged Radios is a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional communication equipment serving the off-road, racing, recreation, and commercial industries.

Cottrell has been a staunch advocate and supporter of Mission Hope Cancer Center and the Day of Hope for nearly a decade.

His business has become the top financial benefactor to the Day of Hope, which altogether has raised over $3 million since the first one was held 12 years ago.

“I do this every year because they’re helping our own,” said Cottrell. “It started off with one of our employees got breast cancer and she was thrown right into their program and I got to know everything about this program and I had to help. I decided every year we’re going to help Mission Hope because they are saving lives and helping our community and helping our Rugged family.”

The Day of Hope was created in 2014 and specifically raises funds for patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center in Santa Maria and Arroyo Grande.

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, starting at 7 a.m., hundreds of volunteers will be located throughout the Santa Maria Valley and in South San Luis Obispo County at dozens street corners, intersections, parking lots, schools, churches and other highly visible locations.

Participating teams members will once again be selling special edition $1 Santa Maria Times newspapers.

Proceeds specifically helps the cancer center provide patients with a myriad of complimentary programs and services.

“Please, please come and support us,” said Dr. April Kennedy, Mission Hope oncologist. “If you ever want to come by the center, we can show you we do because we have we have thousands of patients that we help every single day. We would really appreciate support, so anything that you can donate, whether it’s a dollar or over what you want to do, we would be happy to have it. Thank you!”

Natural gas leak prompts evacuations, road closures in downtown Idaho Falls

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Falls Fire Department is responding to a natural gas leak in downtown Idaho Falls after a construction crew accidentally struck a gas line.

As a precaution, B Street is closed between Park Avenue and Shoop Avenue, including the intersection of B Street and A Street. The department is asking people to avoid driving or walking through the area until the leak is resolved.

Nearby businesses have been evacuated, and an emergency alert was sent to cell phones within the affected area.

Intermountain Gas is on scene working to stop the leak.

Once the gas has been shut off and emergency crews determine the area is safe, people will be allowed to return to evacuated businesses.

El Paso man sentenced 50 years for string of violent felonies

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — A 22-year-old man received a 50-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to violent felony offenses that happened over a five-month period, the 34th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Monday. Hekter Carreto robbed a smoke shop, sexually assaulted and employee and left her unconscious behind the business, according to a news release.

On March 28, 2025, Carreto entered a Northeast El Paso smoke shop, attacked and sexually assaulted an employee and left her unconscious. He also robbed the cash register before leaving, the DA’s office said.

For the March 2025 attack, Carreto was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment on three felony offenses of aggravated kidnapping with intent to violate or abuse sexually, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated robbery, the DA’s office said.

At the time of the robbery, Carreto was on bond for spitting on El Paso police officers after an arrest for public intoxication in January 2025, the DA’s office said. He received a 10-year sentence for harassment of a public servant.

After his arrest for the robbery and sexual assault, law enforcement identified Carreto as a suspect in two other incidents: a November 2024 sexual assault of a teenager in her apartment and a January 2025 burglarizing of a Northeast home, officials said.

Carreto received 20-year sentences for burglary of a habitation intend other felony and sexual assault of a child for the November attack, the DA’s office said. For the January break-in, he received a 20-year sentence for burglary.

The district attorney’s office said Carreto’s sentences will run concurrently.

“This Defendant caused profound trauma to multiple victims and demonstrated an exceptionally dangerous and escalating pattern of violence,” said District Attorney James Montoya. “We are proud of the swift work of our team to bring this case to resolution. El Paso is safer with this Defendant removed from our community.”

City of San Luis receives grant for traffic safety

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) – San Luis, Arizona got funding to continue making downtown traffic safer and more welcoming for Port of Entry users.

The City of San Luis received a $60,000 grant from General Motors (GM). The money will help to create a 2,500-foot roadway mural that will increase driver awareness and increase pedestrian safety.

“It’s going to help a lot with the traffic lights that eventually be there and it’s going to help a big deal at least with the design, how to make it more friendly,” said Mayor Nieves Riedel.

The construction will be on Main and B Street, near the Port of Entry, and Mayor Riedel said San Luis was one of only a few cities in the country to get the grant.

“We are always applying for grants and this is a blessing,” Riedel shared. “Only five communities received it and we were one of them. And anything helps.”

The GM on Main Street Grant started in 2023, and it has awarded $1 million to 21 cities. To learn more about the grant, click here.

Big Rock Fire remains at 0% containment, road closures expected through coming week

HEISE, Idaho (KIFI) — The Big Rock Fire near Heise and Kelly Canyon Resort remains very active and at 0% containment as officials warn people to stay out of the fire area and obey road closures.

“Crews were able to secure Heise Road on the first night, and we were able to protect all the structures along Heise Road – working to the west and then to the north, up in the ag fields up to the north of the fire, up on the mesa.” said Incident Commander Type III Kory Davis, who’s helping lead the Bureau of Land Management efforts to fight the fire. “Then we were able to secure a fire perimeter edge along Kelly Canyon up on the rim there, keeping fire out of Kelly Canyon.”

More than 125 firefighters are combatting the blaze. The men and women are split into four crews – with 15 fire engines, five bulldozers, multiple water tenders and two helicopters.

Officials said current road closures are expected to remain in place through the coming week and could be extended depending on fire conditions and ongoing operations. South Snake River Road, Lyons Creek Road and Forest Service Roads east of Kelly Canyon are off limits.

Emergency crews have reported people attempting to get closer to the fire by going around barricades and road-closed signs. Officials are asking the public not to bypass those closures.

“We understand people may want to get a closer look at the fire, but the roads are closed for a reason,” said the Madison County Sheriff‘s Office in a social media post. “Do not circumvent barricades, road-closed signs, or other closures to access the fire area.”

Officials said entering closed areas creates additional safety concerns and could interfere with firefighters and law enforcement working near the fire.

People in the area are being asked to follow instructions from fire personnel and law enforcement and stay away from active fire operations.

Officials said additional updates will be released as conditions change.

El Paso Electric plans pop-up events to help with rising bill costs

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — El Paso Electric’s Customer Care team will have two pop-up events to help customers with their electric bills, the utility said Monday. Its assistance comes as many customers’ bills increased this summer.

EPE said agents will help customers understand why their bills increased and discuss payment arrangements and plans. They’ll also discuss financial assistance options based on eligibility.

To get help, you must have a valid photo ID, EPE said.

The first assistance event will take place Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the El Paso Community College Administrative Services Center (6050 Viscount Blvd.). Find the agents in Building B’s foyer.

If you can’t make it Tuesday, EPE will have another event at the same place Aug. 13 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

EPE said residents are seeing an increase in their monthly bills due to newly-approved rates taking effect. One customer told ABC-7 her bill went from around $35 to $182.

Another cause for the increase is seasonal summer pricing, EPE said. That remains in effect through October.

Additionally, EPE is setting planning more events to help customers in Socorro and Canutillo.

Prosecutor gives consent to move ‘cult-like’ leader’s manslaughter, sodomy case to Montgomery County

The Cooper County prosecutor filed a motion on Thursday to give consent for the case of a “cult-like” Amish leader to be moved to Montgomery County.  

Sam Shetler, 42, of Boonville, is charged with three counts of trafficking for the purpose of slavery/forced labor, a count of first-degree sodomy, first-degree sex abuse, four counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

He is being held at the Cooper County Jail without bond. Shetler’s attorney filed a motion on May 26 to move the case. The defense requested the case be moved to either Montgomery, Monroe or Shelby counties. A judge has not yet ruled on the motion.

Shetler – who had been described in court documents as a “cult-like” leader of an Amish community –is accused of forcing teenagers to work at the Mercy and Truth-Amish and Mennonite Retreat without pay and rubbing oils on young females to “heal” them, court documents in previous reporting indicate.

Following his March arrest, more victims came forward and accused Shetler of posing as a doctor that gave a “lavender breathing treatment” to a baby who suffered from multiple viruses in 2025, including COVID-19, court documents in previous reporting say. The baby died on March 6, 2025.

Police seek suspect in Conley Road shooting

A shooting took place at the Interstate 70/Highway 63 Connector and Conley Road on Sunday, and the Columbia Police Department is still looking for the shooter.

CPD is still looking to identify the suspect involved and is asking anyone with information to contact them for a reward.

A CPD spokesperson declined to provide more details about the case, citing the ongoing investigation.

At 11:47 a.m., CPD responded to a shots-fired call near Breaktime. A 26-year-old victim with a gunshot wound was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a press release sent by CPD.

Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Roger Johnson declined to provide more details about the case because no suspects have been named.

ABC 17 spoke with a Breaktime employee, who said they were advised not to speak about the matter because it is still an active investigation.

This is one of many reported crimes that have happened on Conley Road this year, according to the CPD’s public crime map.

Near the connector and the 900 block of Conley Road, 21 various crimes have been reported, not including Sunday’s shooting, since January 1, 2026.

Less than a mile away, in front of the Conley Road Walmart, roughly 64 various crimes have been reported in that same time period.

Las Cruces man dies after being hit by car

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) — A 52-year-old man died after a crash in Las Cruces Saturday, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

It happened before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Amador Avenue and Esperanza Street, LCPD said. Police went to the area after a crash report and found the man with multiple injuries.

LCPD said a 22-year-old driver allegedly traveled west on Amador in rainy weather and saw the man walking in the road. The driver tried to avoid hitting him, but failed.

The man went to a Las Cruces hospital and later moved to an El Paso hospital, where he died to his injuries, police said.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation, which is ongoing.

LCPD said it won’t share the man’s name until his family is notified.
