    BIG BEAR LAKE, California (KCAL, KCBS) — Jackie, the bald eagle famous for raising several eaglets in Big Bear with her partner Shadow, is in critical and unstable condition as veterinary teams continue to care for her in Ventura County.

“The past 24 hours have been incredibly difficult,” the Ojai Raptor Center said in a post to Facebook on Sunday afternoon. “[Jackie] remains critically ill, and her condition is currently unstable.”

The bald eagle has been in Ojai Raptor Center’s care for three weeks after she was rescued following a fight with two other eagles. She subsequently fell ill, with the center describing her as anemic.

Jackie’s packed cell volume was as low as 6% on Saturday. It rose to 9% on Sunday, the center said.

“While this is a small improvement, her PCV remains critically low and her overall condition remains extremely serious,” the center said.

As recently as a couple of weeks ago, her PCV was 17%.

Ojai Raptor Center said there were no further updates on her health.

“Our entire focus remains on [Jackie’s] welfare and providing the care she needs,” the center said. “Every decision continues to be guided by her medical condition and what is in her best interest.”

    STOCKTON, California (KOVR) — Two people were killed after a trench collapsed at a construction site in north Stockton early Saturday morning.

A memorial of flowers and candles was growing Sunday near the site of the collapse, in a parking lot near East Hammer Lane and North El Dorado Street, in front of the former Lion Supermarket and ABC Tile storefronts.

Stockton firefighters were called around 5:15 a.m. Saturday to a report of a trench collapse with two people trapped inside.

Fire officials said the trench had been about 10 feet deep before the collapse. Crews secured and stabilized the area before beginning a technical rescue operation.

With help from Stockton Public Works and heavy equipment, crews worked for hours to reach the two people. Both were eventually found dead.

Stockton police and code enforcement remained at the scene after firefighters completed their operation, and Cal/OSHA was brought in to assist with the investigation.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collapse remain under investigation.

Sergio Garcia, a personal injury attorney who has worked on similar cases, said investigators will likely examine whether the workers had proper equipment and information about potential hazards, as well as whether the trench met workplace safety requirements.

“Were they equipped with – were they provided with the right equipment? Were they given the right intelligence about the job and what the requirements and the safety hazards were before they were sent out?” Garcia said. “Also, you want to find out if the trench was prepared to OSHA standards, if it met all the requirements to be safe.”

Garcia said families in cases like this can be left waiting for answers while multiple agencies investigate.

“They do not get the information they need in a timely basis,” Garcia said. “But they should be able to provide at least the basic information that the families will need right at the onset.”

By Sunday, the trench had been filled with dirt and gravel.

    SAN FRANCISCO, California (KPIX) — A rollover crash on Interstate 280 in San Francisco turned into an animal rescue Saturday evening after a pug escaped from the vehicle and ran along the freeway.

The San Francisco Fire Department and California Highway Patrol responded around 6:12 p.m. to southbound I-280 near Cesar Chavez Street.

Fire officials said the people inside the vehicle were OK, but crews then had to locate and secure a pug that had been riding inside.

After a brief chase along the freeway, firefighters and CHP officers caught the dog.

The pug was not injured, fire officials said.

No other details about the crash were immediately released.

    ROSEVILLE, Michigan (WWJ) — The Roseville Police Department in Roseville, Michigan, is investigating after it said five people were injured following a shooting and large fight during a wedding reception on Saturday night.

Officials responded to the incident at the parking lot of Athena Hall, located at 25650 Gratiot Ave., around 11 p.m. Witnesses told police that guests at the wedding reception began fighting with one another and that at least two handguns were drawn before shots were fired.

“The scene quickly descended into chaos as guests fled the area,” Roseville Police Chief Mitchell Berlin said.

Three people, including a woman, were shot and taken to area hospitals, according to police. They sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and are expected to recover fully.

Officers at the scene found a man who had been hit by a fleeing vehicle. Police said he appeared to have suffered a broken hip and was treated at the scene before “being transported for further medical care.”

According to officials, another person suffered a deep cut, though it wasn’t immediately known how the injury happened.

“The victims and witnesses were not very cooperative with officers, but detectives will be working on identifying additional witnesses,” Berlin said.

    MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (WCCO) — Hundreds of people aboard electric scooters and e-bikes took to downtown Minneapolis streets and sidewalks — and on Interstate 35W — late Saturday night in what’s being called a “scooter takeover.”

A WCCO photojournalist shot footage near U.S. Bank Stadium around 9 p.m. Promoter Johan Vargas, 20, told WCCO he did a scooter meet-up on Friday and posted videos to TikTok. He was only expecting around 200 riders for Saturday’s meet-up, but says more than 500 riders showed up.

“I just started seeing more and more people. I don’t know where half these people came from, but all of them said they saw the TikToks,” Vargas said. “I was expecting maybe like 200, not 500 to 1,000. But I mean, I’m glad everyone came out, they all had fun. I mean, that’s what it’s all about.”

Later, highway cameras captured people on scooters on Interstate 35W. The Minnesota State Patrol said troopers responded around 11 p.m. after witnesses reported seeing hundreds of Lime scooters on the highway.

“That was past me because I left at like 10 p.m. and then everyone just went their own separate way. I mean, I put a disclaimer to follow all traffic laws,” Vargas said. “I don’t support that. I support everyone just being in the city having fun.”

State Patrol Lt. Jennifer Krier called it “an extremely dangerous situation,” saying Lime scooters and other non-motorized devices are prohibited from entering freeways.

“Freeways are designed for high-speed motor vehicle traffic, leaving scooter riders with little protection and drivers with very little time to react,” Krier said in a statement. “Entering the freeway puts the scooter rider’s life at risk, and could also result in a serious or fatal crash involving other motorists.”

She also suggested implementing a geofencing plan, which would create areas of the city where scooters are restricted. WCCO has reached out to the city to learn more about whether any geofencing is in place.

In a statement released late Sunday afternoon, Minneapolis police say its officers “monitored the group and its movements, which at times were reckless and disruptive to traffic,” adding that no one was arrested or cited for violations.

“If similar activity continues or occurs again, MPD will work with the appropriate city resources and scooter companies in an effort to regulate where and how the scooters may be operated,” a police spokesperson said.

The City of Minneapolis website notes there are no-riding zones downtown, including areas where riders cannot stop and park the scooters.

Riders are required to wear helmets, yield to pedestrians and follow “the same traffic laws as bicyclists,” according to the city. Users, however, can’t ride with more than one passenger or ride or park on sidewalks, which are considered “scooter clear zones.”

“The clear zone means there must be at least 4 feet of clear sidewalk space for everyone,” the city states on its website.

The city also says users must also ride “as close as safely possible to the right-hand site of the road.”

All and all, Vargas said it was all about having a good time with community.

“Saturday night, a lot of people like to go out club and party, but why not ride scooters in the city with all your friends? It’s a free event, besides paying for your scooter,” Vargas said. “I think a lot of people just want to get together. I mean, all ages were … there was a 50-year-old lady up to a dad and his daughter.”

    CHICAGO, Illinois (WBBM) — Bally’s said it’s “resetting the pace of construction” on its permanent Chicago casino amid a dispute with City Hall over video gambling.

In a statement Bally’s said it gave notice to the Chicago Community Builders Collective about this pace change, noting it could impact up to 1,500 union workers on the project.

Bally’s has threatened to sue the city over the potential expansion of video gambling terminals in the city, which the company said is a breach of its contract.

The legalization and expansion of video gambling terminals in Chicago is part of the $16.6 billion budget written by City Council opponents of Mayor Brandon Johnson, which passed the city council and which the mayor allowed to go into effect without his signature last year. The revenue from video gambling – along with an increase in the city’s plastic bag tax, overhauling the tax of off-premise liquor sales and finding new advertising opportunities – were the councilmen’s alternative to Johnson’s proposed corporate head tax.

“The potential for an uncontrolled proliferation of video gambling terminals (VGTs) is in breach of the City’s commitment not to expand gaming in the Host Community Agreement (HCA) and creates uncertainty that could be harmful for Bally’s Chicago prospects,” Bally’s said in its statement Sunday.

The company said the opening for the casino remains set for early next year, writing it “intends to fully honor its commitments under the Host Community Agreement.”

“We will continue to assess our options, which we hope will include more productive discussions with the Mayor’s Office and City Council,” the statement concluded.

    BALTIMORE, Maryland (WJZ) — Three juveniles were taken into custody after a reported carjacking in West Baltimore on Saturday night, according to police.

Police responded around 9:30 p.m. to the 1600 block of West North Avenue after a License Plate Reader (LPR) alert indicated a vehicle wanted in connection with a reported carjacking.

The Baltimore Police helicopter, known as Foxtrot, was requested and located the vehicle traveling eastbound on East North Avenue.

Officers stopped the vehicle at the intersection of East North Avenue and Homewood Avenue.

Three juvenile males were inside the vehicle and were taken into custody. Police also recovered a loaded handgun.

All three juveniles were taken to juvenile booking for processing.

“It’s just an ongoing cycle, and that’s why it’s scary, because it’s not ever going to change any time soon,” a neighbor said.

The latest incident comes amid a string of deadly crashes this summer involving children accused of stealing vehicles.

Last week, a father of five died after police said he was struck by a stolen Kia driven by a 13-year-old in Germantown, Maryland.

In June, 3-year-old Jordan Bright was killed on the streets of Baltimore by a 14-year-old who police said was driving a stolen vehicle.

“I just want Jordan to know that we will always love her and we miss her, and we are never going to forget her,” one of her siblings said at her vigil.

    SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts (WBZ) — Divers spent several hours looking for a missing man in Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Sunday.

Officers were called to Sunset Beach around 3:30 p.m. for what they said was a report of a man “possibly drowning.”

“The initial first responders were unable to locate the victim,” police said in a statement.

Divers, drones and more first responders were brought in for the search which lasted into the night, but the man was not found. His name has not been made public.

One witness, Michael Cruz of Shrewsbury, said rescuers were focusing on a life jacket in the lake.

“There was a jet ski circling a life jacket over there. As soon as I docked my jet ski, all the fire department and police started to roll in here. It’s kind of a shock seeing all the neighbors coming outside all worried and stuff,” Cruz told WBZ-TV.

The search was called off for the night around 8:45 p.m. There’s no word yet on if it will resume Monday morning.

No other information is available at this point in the investigation.

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is about 39 miles west of Boston.
