Meta settlement signals shift in social media industry

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – A landmark settlement with Meta could change how social media companies protect teens.

The settlement includes changes for teen users, including age verification, limited scrolling and fewer notifications during school.

Megan Shahi, Director of Technology Policy at the Center for American Progress and a former policy employee at Facebook and Instagram, said the settlement is different from past debates over social media because it focuses on how the platforms are designed, not just the content users see.

Shahi says features like infinite scrolling are central to the way social media companies keep people on their platforms, making the changes especially significant.

She also says the settlement could put pressure on other platforms, including TikTok and YouTube, to make similar changes.

Shahi says the next year will be important as Meta works to put the changes in place and the industry responds.

64-year-old man seriously injured in motorcycle crash

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 64-year-old man from Pleasant Hill was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash Friday on Willow Creek Road in Camden County, according to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The report says the man rode his 2008 Harley Davison FLHTC northbound and the bike started to skid on a curve. The bike overturned and the rider fell from the vehicle, the report says.

The man was flown to University Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, the report says.

MSHP reports do not name those involved in crashes.

Palm Springs Police create citizen oversight board for Flock cameras

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — The Palm Springs Police Department has created a citizen oversight board to provide more accountability and transparency around the department’s use of surveillance technology, including Flock cameras.

The five-member board includes technology experts and people who have raised concerns about police surveillance. Lieutenant Mike Villegas say they intentionally included people with different perspectives.

“That’s the people that we want because what better group to speak independently aside from the police department that can form their own opinions about how we are using technology and that we’re using it the right way,” said Villegas.

The board’s initial focus will be license plate readers.

“The board is going to be focused on that, how we conduct audits, look at our policies and ways to improve them.”

For critics, questions remain about how much influence the new board will have.

“My concern would be that these committees don’t have any power… if they’re just something that is just being used to appease the public and they’re not going to listen or have any kind of change over policies and especially over the contracts that our police force signs, I think it’s very important,” said resident Elizabeth Humphreys.

Humphreys also says concerns remain about how information collected by Flock cameras is handled and whether it can be shared with other agencies.

“I don’t think there is going to be trust in Flock itself unless the company overhauls its policy…”

Villegas says he understands why some people remain concerned about the technology, especially following reports of misuse by other agencies but says the department is focused on its own policies and what it can do to build transparency and accountability here.

“At the end of the day, people can choose not to agree with us but that’s okay. We’re doing our part in what we can to make sure people understand we are doing it the right way.”

Police plan to introduce the board members to the public in the coming weeks.

Information about the board’s work will also be shared through its meetings and updates posted on the Palm Springs Police Department’s website.

Meanwhile, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has launched weekly “Flock Fridays” to explain how Flock cameras work.

Somerton man accused of burglary formally charged

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA) – A Somerton man is now facing multiple felony charges after the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) said he broke into a home and vehicle.

David Ruiz-Martinez, 23, was formally charged Friday with second-degree burglary, criminal damage and theft. His bond remains at $5,000.

Ruiz-Martinez was arrested Tuesday, August 25, after trying to run from YCSO deputies at his home.

On Wednesday, YCSO searched his home and found evidence related to the burglary as well as narcotics.

Ruiz-Martinez was also on probation for a prior case, and is now facing a probation violation.

In addition, he is facing charges for dangerous drug possession, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana for sale.

He is scheduled to be back in court next Tuesday.

Motorcyclist killed in Bear Lake County head-on collision

BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho (KIFI) —A 22-year-old motorcyclist from North Ogden, Utah, lost his life Friday after colliding head-on with a Jeep in Bear Lake County.

According to the Idaho State Police (ISP), the crash took place around 11:20 a.m. on Friday, August 28. The young man was riding a white 2026 Kawasaki KLZX110 eastbound when he collided head-on with a westbound Jeep driven by a 66-year-old woman from Montpelier, Idaho.

The motorcyclist, who was not wearing his helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep was not wearing a seatbelt, but ISP states that she did not require medical transport to a hospital.

Emergency personnel closed Minnetonka Cave Road for approximately four hours to investigate and clear the wreckage. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including ISP, the Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Bear Lake EMS, Bear Lake Fire, and Intermountain Life Flight.

The crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

Juvenile suspect in east Columbia shooting to remain in custody

A 15-year-old boy who is accused of shooting another youth earlier this week will remain in state custody, according to the juvenile office.

The name of the boy accused in the Tuesday shooting in 5700 block of Canaveral Drive has not been named by authorities in accordance with Missouri law.

The boy is currently charged with five counts of first-degree assault –one of which is a Class A felony, while the other four are Class B felonies – as well as single counts of unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence.

The shooting left another youth in critical condition.

A hearing in the case is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Man who pled guilty to Yuma house party shooting sentenced

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The man who pled guilty to a deadly Yuma house party shooting was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday.

Abraham Colin, 22, pleaded guilty earlier this month to second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges.

Under the plea agreement, Colin will serve 20 years for the murder charge, and an additional ten years for the assault charge consecutively.

The shooting happened in May of 2023 at a house party in Yuma, with prosecutors saying Colin and others arrived at the party with firearms, and Colin fired 21 shots.

Danny Garcia, 19, and Ande Blackthunder, 20, were killed, and other minors were shot.

Following his release from prison, Colin will also serve two years of probation.

A second suspect in the case, 22-year-old Aden Arviso, is still scheduled to go to trial in September.

Arviso is accused of second-degree murder in connection to the shooting.
