Power outage scheduled for south Columbia neighborhood on Wednesday

A temporary power outage has been scheduled for a Columbia neighborhood on Wednesday morning.

A Monday press release from the city says crews will remove fallen trees from an overhead power line.

“A tree has fallen onto a second tree, causing an issue with an overhead power line. For the crew to remove the tree safely, the power must be turned off,” the release says.

Power will be turned off between 8:30 a.m.-noon for the area near Lynwood Drive, Red Oak Lane and Crawford Street. About 70 city electric customers will be affected.

Driver arrested after hit-and-run crash on I-10 near Date Palm Drive

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (KESQ) -A driver was arrested after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Date Palm Drive that left another driver injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said officers responded at about 5:44 p.m. Tuesday to a crash on eastbound I-10, west of Date Palm Drive.

When officers arrived, they determined one of the vehicles involved had left the scene. The driver who remained at the crash site was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with cuts and scrapes.

Investigators identified the vehicle that left the scene as a 2025 Land Rover.

CHP said officers later located the Land Rover and its driver at a residence in La Quinta. The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run causing injury.

The Land Rover driver was not injured in the crash.

T-Mobile hosting Friday Night 5G Lights Tailgates through out the Desert Southwest

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) – T-Mobile announced they are bringing a Friday Night 5G Lights Tailgate event to Calexico this weekend.

In Yuma, Yuma High, Gila Ridge and Harvest prep took part in the action Tuesday afternoon, hoping to win money for their school.

According to T-Mobile, this is to give small-town high schools across the country “more opportunities than ever to celebrate their communities and compete for prizes that can make a meaningful difference.”

The schools who participate can win more than $8.4 million in prizes, including a $1 million football field transformation, T-Mobile said.

Those who attend will meet local football players, cheerleaders and band members, play games, participate in giveaways, and more.

The event is taking place Saturday, August 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the T-Mobile store, located at 2536 Rockwood Avenue, Suites 104 and 105.

San Luis Police address residents concerns over Flock Cameras

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) – Residents in San Luis, Arizona are raising questions about the city’s use of Flock Cameras and how the information collected by the technology is used.

The San Luis Police Department (SLPD) has been using Flock Cameras since 2021, and they said the cameras have helped officers locate stolen vehicles and support investigations.

The city currently has at least ten Flock cameras operating at strategic locations around San Luis, according to SLPD.

The cameras use automated license plate readers to collect information about vehicles passing by.

Lt. Emmanuel Botello with SLPD said the information is stored in a protected database used by the department.

Police said the cameras have been particularly helpful in locating stolen vehicles before they cross into Mexico, as well as investigating crimes where a suspect leaves the scene.

Some residents said they support having the cameras in the city because they believe they provide an added layer of security.

Police added the cameras are intended to support public safety and investigations.

Local community reacts to deadly earthquake in Colombia

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – The shockwaves from a powerful earthquake in Colombia are being felt here in the Coachella Valley — where local residents with family and friends back home are watching the destruction unfold.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia Monday, damaging buildings, tearing apart roads and leaving communities facing a long recovery.

For Vanessa Vasco, the disaster is personal.

Vasco is from Manizales, Colombia, one of the areas most affected by the earthquake. She recently returned to the Coachella Valley after visiting her hometown and says it has been painful to watch the destruction from afar.

“I was in Colombia like two weeks ago and my city so beautiful, I left everything okay, and now my city is destroyed, all the people in pain, it’s very painful for me,” Vasco said.

Her family is safe, but she says one of her friends lost her home after the earthquake struck.

“My friend she just run away to save her life and her home collapsed and lost everything,” Vasco said.

Vasco says people in Colombia remain worried another earthquake could happen, but she is also seeing people come together to help those affected.

“All the people are very concerned because they are afraid it will happen again, but all the people are helping,” she said.

She says the road to recovery will be long, with many buildings damaged and families left trying to rebuild their lives.

Lithium Valley Program approved

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) – Lithium Valley is back in the spotlight Tuesday after the Imperial County Board of Supervisors voted on a program for workforce development and tax incentives.

The board passed the motion on the LiNC Program 3 to 2, with Supervisors Martha Cardenas Singh and Jesus Escobar voting no.

The initiative is tied to the county’s efforts to prepare local workers for jobs expected to come with lithium development.

“We’re really looking to improve our competitiveness, not only by developing an individual lithium extraction project, but by building a vertically integrated supply chain,” said Bari Bean, Assistant County Executive.

During public comments, some people requested the item to be tabled so that the proposal can be examined a little more.

“If the police table it and move it to another further further so people can bring in more hard facts as well. As the lady said, where do you get these numbers? We’d like to analyze that as well,” said Eric Reyes with the Brawley City Council.

Sheriff Fred Miramontes said the tax revenue from Lithium Valley will help fund public safety and provide more staffing and body cameras for law enforcement.

“This program creates an opportunity to strengthen public safety, no matter how small or big, it’s a step in the right direction,” Sheriff Miramontes explained.

Supporters and those opposed said the goal is to make sure Imperial Valley residents, not outside corporations, benefit from these opportunities.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over: Bend Police remind drivers to stay sober behind the wheel

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Bend Police Department is offering a reminder to stay sober behind the wheel, as it’s already arrested more than 240 people for DUII this year alone.

It’s easy to avoid being a DUII statistic if you plan ahead.

“The best thing we can do, is if we’re going to be out drinking, going to bars, or even staying home and drinking, be responsible,” said Officer Tommy Charles. “Get somebody to drive for you. Call an Uber, call a taxi, whatever you need to do to keep yourself from being on the road and endangering other people.”

BPD says the worst case scenario is not that you go to jail, it’s that you get into a crash, and severely hurt yourself or someone else.

Three Santa Maria gang members to stand trial for violent San Luis Obispo assault

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) – Three Santa Maria gang members will stand trial following a violent assault in San Luis Obispo near Hotel Cerro on Oct. 6, 2024.

Alex Brian Lopez-Ramirez, Miguel Angel Mendez, Brian Ramirez Lopez will answer for charges and allegations alleged in a formal complaint, according to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office.

Evidence showed that all three men repeatedly stomped, kicked and punched a victim in the middle of the road and continued doing so after the victim went unconscious, according to the SLOCDAO.

Paramedics later treated the victim for severe injuries at a local hospital, and video footage of the attack, including by the defendants themselves, was included as evidence, according to the SLOCDAO.

Investigators later identified the three defendants as gang members and the victim as a rival gang member from Santa Maria, according to the SLOCDAO.

All three defendants were held to answer for assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury charges alongside special allegations that the assault benefited a criminal street gang, according to the SLOCDAO.

The SLOPD, SLOCDAO Bureau of Investigators and Santa Maria Police all helped investigate the case and all three defendants are currently out of custody, according to the SLOCDAO.

Arraignment for all three men is set for September 17, 2026, according to the SLOCDAO.

Discounted camping rates until the end of August

AMERICAN FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — All 28 state parks across Idaho have announced a 25% discount on camping through the end of August.

All types of camping, from tents and RV hookups to cabins, are discounted. Although camping options vary between parks, state parks across Idaho offer visitors a variety of experiences.

One of those is a hidden gem just west of American Falls: Massacre Rocks State Park.

Park Manager Travis Taylor says camping there in August offers visitors a chance to ditch the crowds and experience the campground’s peaceful atmosphere and solitude.

“The nice thing about these older campgrounds is the sites weren’t built on top of one another,” Taylor said. “So even though there’s 21 sites down in this loop, they’re not so close to one another and you feel like you’re away from the crowds.”

From camping and fishing to hiking, the park has also been working to make its recreational opportunities more accessible. Taylor is currently working on grants to make the park’s fishing docks more accessible.

Through a grant from Idaho for All, Massacre Rocks received a track wheelchair to help guests access the park’s trails.

“We were fortunate enough to receive one of the track chairs on this first go-around from them, and it’s going to be available to use free of charge,” Taylor said. “We’re really excited because most of our trails are dirt and that’s never going to change. So this is an exciting opportunity for everyone here.”

To reserve the track wheelchair, visitors are asked to email the park at least one day in advance to ensure it is available.

Whether you decide to go camping this month or during the winter, Taylor recommends checking the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation’s website before heading out in case additional deals or discounts are available.

Gas leak closes part of Anderson Street in Idaho Falls

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — First responders are on the scene of a gas leak near the intersection of Boulevard and Anderson Street in Idaho Falls Tuesday evening.

According to the Idaho Falls Police Department, Anderson Street is closed to all traffic between Boulevard and Holmes Avenue while crews respond to the leak.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

IFPD said additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
