OXNARD, Calif. (KEYT) Oxnard’s Fisherman’s Wharf is about to be transformed.

It is going to be a strawberry-themed village called Karls Village.

It is named after Karl Dahl.

His son Robert Dahl visited Oxnard for a groundbreaking celebration.

“It’s a place for families, no entrance fee, it will be a beautiful place for eating something, having fun with kids or without kids, a place to visit,” said Dahl.

Dahl comes from a family of strawberry growers.

“I know Oxnard already 41 years because I am a strawberry grower like my father and he brought me when I was 14,” said Dahl.

Axel Stetler will be overseeing the project.

“There is nothing like it in the U.S.,” said Stetler.

There are 8 locations in Germany.

During the celebration visitors helped paint the temporary green fence.

They also had a chance to bid on items from the former wharf.

People can see the work getting underway near the corner of the Channel Islands Blvd. and Victoria Ave. in the Channel Islands Harbor.

The lighthouse has already been painted with the logo and reads “Eat, Shop, Play.”

The goal is to host a grand opening in the Spring of 2028.

OXNARD, Calif. (KEYT) Members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity from up and down the coast and all over Southern California held a weekend BBQ cook out by the beach in Oxnard.

The founding members have the motto; “We Lead, We Follow, We Serve.”

They also hosted the Valley Brothers of Omicron Mu along with members of the AKA and Delta sororities.

They met up at the ‘olołkoy Beach Park, formerly known as Oxnard Beach Park on Saturday.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) — Local teachers are finding new ways to turn discarded materials into hands-on classroom lessons as they prepare for the new school year.

Explore Ecology’s Art From Scrap gives paper, art supplies and other reclaimed materials another purpose instead of sending them to the landfill. The Santa Barbara creative reuse store diverts thousands of pounds of materials from the Tajiguas Landfill each year.

“We focus on all of these things that we’re surrounded by every day and how to repurpose them, reuse them, give things a new life,” said Lindsay Johnson, executive director of Explore Ecology.

Upstairs in the Makerspace, educators have been cutting, folding and creating handmade journals while exploring projects they can bring back to their students.

“It’s very inspiring,” said Jared Kedzia, a teacher from Camarillo. “They basically have a writing prompt every time we do one of these, and today’s writing prompt was just to observe the space.”

The workshops combine creativity, sustainability and environmental education, giving teachers ideas they can adapt for their own classrooms.

“We want to make sure that we serve the community in the best way possible, we connect with other people and we shape futures,” said San Luis Obispo teacher Juan Luzuriaga.

Explore Ecology and UC Santa Barbara are also helping educators find ways to incorporate environmental literacy into everyday learning.

“I think environmental literacy is important because there’s a lot of ways we can bring it into the classroom, but we also have to understand what our students bring into the classroom and their knowledge,” said Camille Despain, associate director of the South Coast Writing Project.

As summer winds down, materials once headed for the trash are getting a new life, and teachers are taking new ideas back to school.

LOMPOC, Calif. (KEYT) – Vandenberg Space Force Base is hosting a “Golden Shovel” groundbreaking ceremony today for a new 160,000-square-foot training facility. 

The Air Education and Training Command Sentinel Formal Training Unit will consolidate instruction for both missile operators and maintainers.

The facility represents the largest Sentinel military construction project at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The LGM-35A Sentinel is the U.S. military’s next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system. 

It’s designed to replace the aging Cold War-era Minuteman III. Vandenberg serves as the primary operational test launch and evaluation base for this strategic deterrence modernization program.

Once built, the integrated campus will combine Initial Skills Training for missile operators with technical training for missile maintainers to support the onboarding of the Sentinel program.

Air Force Global Strike Command, Sentinel Task Force Detachment nine organized the event in coordination with Space Launch Delta 30 and Air Education and Training Command.

Military and civilian leaders will be in attendance to celebrate another step forward in Vandenberg’s growth.

NIPOMO, Calif. (KEYT) – A two-car crash injured three people and started a vegetation fire at Highway 1 and Willow Road in Nipomo just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Nearby brush caught fire after the crash when one car burst into flames while two people suffered moderate injuries and another had minor injuries, according to the CHP.

CAL FIRE SLO crews put out the fire 15 minutes after initial ignition and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
