Near Total Lunar Eclipse to Light Up Santa Barbara Sky

MONTECITO, Calif. (KEYT) – Westmont Observatory is opening to the public as a near-total lunar eclipse unfolds over the Santa Barbara area.

Nearly all of the moon will slip into Earth’s shadow as the eclipse reaches about 96 percent coverage.

The moon could take on a deep red color as Earth blocks much of the sunlight normally reaching the lunar surface.

Physicists and local astronomy enthusiasts will be on hand to help visitors experience the rare nighttime event.

The gathering gives the community a chance to watch the eclipse together under the night sky.
