Washington (Quincy News) — Market Recap: Wall Street ended the week higher Friday with the S&P 500 gaining 0.6% to close at a record. The Nasdaq rose 1.3% and the Dow added 0.3%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield ended Friday around 4.6%.
The rally followed an unexpectedly weak July employment report. U.S. employers shed 23,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.1%. Job losses were concentrated in local government, education and retail trade, while health care continued to add jobs. The report reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates at its September meeting.
Today’s Focus: With no major federal economic reports scheduled Monday, investors will be looking ahead to Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index, the first major inflation reading since Friday’s jobs report. June’s CPI fell 0.4% from the previous month, while core prices were unchanged. Wednesday’s report will help show whether inflation is cooling more broadly or whether the recent decline in headline inflation was largely driven by lower energy prices.
Brent crude hovered near $83 a barrel Friday, while negotiations over a potential agreement to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remained unresolved Sunday. Any renewed increase in energy prices could complicate the inflation outlook.
