Shaq announces DJ Diesel tour stop in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Shaquille O’Neal — under the name “DJ Diesel” — will perform at a Northeast El Paso Bar come September, according to a social media post he made Tuesday.

His stop in the Sun City is one of just four in Texas.

The former basketball player also goes by the stage name DJ Diesel. He’ll perform at the 11:11 bar on Dyer Street Sept. 17. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m.

“I usually come to Texas once a year for my festival… but this year we’re mixing it up and doing a full Texas Takeover,” Shaq wrote online.

Truck crashes into UMC laboratory

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Tuesday, a truck crashed into a University Medical Center laboratory on Alberta Avenue, according to a spokesperson.

According to a UMC El Paso spokesperson, there was no immediate danger to patients, staff or operations.

Employees in the area and those inside the truck were being evaluated out of an abundance of caution.

Additionally, a structural engineer and city inspectors are looking into the damage done to the building. ABC-7 captured video of a hole in the wall where the truck hit.

Portion of South Sinclair Road in Columbia to close for a month for roundabout construction

A portion of South Sinclair Road in Columbia will close for a month beginning Monday, July 20, according to a Tuesday press release from the city.

The closure – which is expected to last until 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 — will occur between Nifong Boulebard and Muirfield Drive to complete a roundabout at South Sinclair Road and West Southampton Drive “as part of a private development project,” the release says.

Northbound traffic on South Sinclair Road will be detoured to Muirfield Drive, while southbound traffic from Nifong Boulevard should follow detour signs to Forum Boulevard and West Southampton Drive.

UM System receives $160 million for critical materials crossroads engine

The University of Missouri System crucial materials crossroads was picked by the U.S. National Science Foundation to receive $160 million in funding, according to a Tuesday release from the university.

The grant is the largest award in the state’s higher-education history, the release says.

“NSF Engines investments in critical technologies and future industries will transform America’s innovation infrastructure for decades to come,” acting NSF director Brian Stone was quoted in the release. “This NSF Critical Materials Crossroads Engine will be a substantial resource in the Midwest to onshore and sustain production capacity for critical minerals used across the transportation, energy, communication and national security sectors.”

The Critical Materials Crossroads was started at the UM System in 2022 and has more than 260 partners spanning higher education, industry, entrepreneurship, government and community workforce development organizations in Missouri and Kansas, the release says

“Critical Materials Crossroads is expected to create approximately 10,000 jobs by 2036 across manufacturing, research and development, logistics, engineering, construction and workforce training that will generate real economic growth for Missouri and the broader region,” the release says.

Kofa MCJROTC cadet earns first place in National Rifle Championship

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD) says Kofa High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) cadet Mildreth Hernandez earned first place in the National Rifle Associations Rifle Championship.

YUHSD says Hernandez’s win marked the “first national Gold Medal in program history for Kofa’s MCJROTC rifle team,” and says she was one of 132 competitors to earn first place.

In addition to Hernandez’s win, YUHSD says four of the following Kofa cadets finished in the top 30%:

Fifth Place: Thifanny Cardenas

Seventh Place: Delila Mendez

22nd Place: Gunner Kinsey

35th Place: Michael Lawson

The Kofa team also earned second overall out of 27 teams, which earned them a silver medal, YUHSD says.

“There are no words to describe this fantastic season,” Kofa MCJROTC Instructor Maj. Todd Birney said. “We will miss our seniors, but they have mentored the younger shooters who will fill their shoes for years to come.”

Westbound I-70 on-ramp at Providence Road to close for several months beginning July 27

The westbound on-ramp to Interstate 70 from Providence Road in Columbia will close July 27 for several months, according to a Tuesday press release from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Construction on the Providence Road bridge started in May and led to the closure of the off-ramp, which will stay closed for the whole construction project.

An end date for the on-ramp closure was not listed in the release.

The two eastbound ramps are still open, but they are expected to close at some point this summer, the release says.

The work is part of the Improve I-70 Project, which aims to make I-70 a three-lane highway across the state.

‘You’re a dead terrorist b****:’ Man allegedly threatens US Forest Service officer at Las Cruces court

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) — A Silver City man has been charged with threatening a U.S. Forest Service officer at a Las Cruces court after a sentencing hearing, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico said Tuesday.

Court documents alleged that on June 11, 55-year-old Fred Andrew Berry appeared in a Las Cruces federal court for a sentencing hearing related to previous violations on U.S. Forest Service land, the attorney’s office said.

After the hearing, a U.S. Forest Service officer attending court approached Berry to issue two citations: one for keeping a campfire during fire restrictions and one for improperly disposing trash, a news release said.

After receiving the citations, Berry allegedly threatened the officer, the attorney’s office said.

Documents alleged Berry said, “Just know that if I see you in the streets, you’re a dead terrorist b****.”

Officials said a Bureau of Land Management ranger and a courtroom security officer witnessed the alleged dthreat.

The courtroom security officer heard Berry allegedly say, “I said what I said,” when asked whether the statement was a threat, according to the news release.

Berry is charged with making threats to a federal law enforcement officer and will remain in custody pending trial. If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison.

Oregon State Police seek witnesses to serious Highway 20 crash

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. (KTVZ) — Oregon State Police are asking for additional witnesses following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 20 last week that left two people seriously injured.

Troopers say the crash happened around 12:47 p.m. Friday, July 10th, near milepost 41. The location is roughly 2 miles west of the community of Brothers.

According to a preliminary investigation, a westbound 2013 black Chevrolet Silverado towing a single-axle utility trailer attempted to pass a black Dodge 4500 that was also pulling a trailer. At the same time, an eastbound Hyundai Elantra tried to avoid a collision with the Silverado, lost control on the gravel shoulder, crossed into the westbound lane, and crashed into the Dodge’s trailer.

The driver and passenger of the Hyundai were airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The crash shut down traffic in the area for about five hours.

Police say the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was cited for careless driving and unsafe passing.

Investigators are now looking for anyone who may have seen the Silverado traveling westbound on Highway 20 before or during the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oregon State Police Northern Command Center at 800-442-0776 or dial *OSP from a mobile phone and reference case number SP26-255130.

BrightSide Animal Center opens Redmond’s first private SniffSpot

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) — BrightSide Animal Center has opened what it says is Redmond’s first private SniffSpot, offering dog owners a new option for safe, off-leash play while also supporting shelter animals.

The half-acre, fully fenced space is located at the animal center and is available by reservation only. Unlike traditional dog parks, each booking provides exclusive use of the area, giving dogs a quieter, more controlled environment to run and play.

The park includes toys, water features, and open space designed for dogs to explore without the stress that can come with crowded public parks.

“Every dog deserves the chance to get outside, burn off energy, and have fun,” said Savanah Wellman, assistant director at BrightSide Animal Center. “We know public dog parks aren’t the right fit for every dog, and as a pet owner myself with a selective pup, I struggle to find safe areas for my pets to explore off-leash.”

BrightSide says each reservation will directly support the shelter’s operations, including food, medical care, and other services for animals awaiting adoption.

The SniffSpot can be booked through BrightSide Animal Center’s listing or the SniffSpot app.
