El Paso Department of Public Health reports 7 cyclosporiasis cases

Gabrielle Lopez

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — The City of El Paso Department of Public Health is investigating seven reported cases of cyclosporiasis, the city said Monday.

The city said no common source of exposure has been identified, and there’s no evidence linking the cases to a single event, location or food source.

As part of the investigation, the health department determined five individuals reported recent travel to Mexico during the parasite’s incubation period, the city said. Three of those five went to Cancún.

The other two people didn’t report recent travel.

The city said public health officials are investigating each case to find any additional links.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness. People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite.

Symptoms may include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and a low-grade fever. If left untreated, symptoms may last for several weeks and may reappear, the city said.

The city said people can reduce their risk of illness by:

Washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating or preparing them.

Practicing good hand hygiene, especially before handling food and after using the restroom.

Drinking safe, treated water when traveling.

Contacting a healthcare provider if they experience persistent diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

“Cael is the Hero”: Father-son team, quick-thinking bystanders rescue unconscious motorcyclist from Ammon canal

Seth Ratliff

AMMON, Idaho (KIFI) — A motorcyclist is recovering after an accident Sunday night left him unconscious in a canal along Sunnyside Road. Thanks to the quick action of several bystanders and an off-duty first responder, both the driver and his passenger are safe.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened in the 5000 block of Sunnyside Road near the Ammon Cemetery.

Eyewitness Brady Wirick told Local News 8 that a motorcycle carrying two people left the roadway, causing the driver to lose control and launch both riders into the canal.

As the crash unfolded, Fire Marshall Scott Grimmett was heading home while his son Cael Grimmett was parked nearby at the intersection of Sweeder Range and Sunnyside, preparing to head back to work on a Wyoming ranch.

“All I saw was my son [Cael] sprinting along Sunnyside,” recalled Grimmett. “That’s when I saw the motorcycle on the side of the canal.”

Scott Grimmett says his son Cael was parked along Sunnyside at Elkington Ranch, preparing to head back to work on a ranch in Wyoming. He says he had been heading home in his truck towing a trailer at the time, when he suddenly saw his son racing towards the canal.

“All I saw was my son sprinting along Sunnyside,” said Grimmett. “That’s when I saw the motorcycle on the side of the canal.”

While the female passenger managed to crawl out on her own, the driver remained unresponsive, face down in the water. Cael Grimmett leaped into the canal, flipping the man onto his back to keep his airway clear. Scott Grimmett joined him to stabilize the driver’s spine and hold him against the current, while Wirick and other bystanders jumped in to help anchor them to the steep bank.

Emergency crews arrived within three minutes. Working together, five bystanders and three sheriff’s deputies—along with an Idaho Falls Fire Department engine and ambulance crew—secured the driver to a spine board and collar before lifting him out of the canal.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to a local hospital. BCSO Sgt. Bryan Lovell confirmed that the driver’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

“Cael is the hero. Scott is a bad***,” said Wirick positively. “Also impressed how fast the first responders showed up!”

Assembly District 36 candidates swap podiums for coffee shops

Lynette Niebla

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA) – While California’s primary contests are firmly in the rearview mirror, the race for the State Assembly District 36 seat is heating up on a much smaller, more intimate stage.

Instead of crowded town halls and podiums, Republican incumbent Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez and Democratic challenger Dr. Ida Obeso-Martinez are choosing to meet voters where they are: At local coffee shops.

Over the weekend, both campaigns poured their energy into community meet-ups across the Imperial Valley, serving up casual conversation alongside morning brews.

The events are part of ongoing, district-wide listening tours designed to stir up relaxed dialogue with constituents while simultaneously highlighting and supporting small businesses in the region.

For Assemblyman Gonzalez, stepping away from the formal campaign trail allows for a more authentic connection with the community.

“We can just be ourselves and just talk and find out how we can work together as a community, how we can be united as a community,” Gonzalez said during a stop at 3:16 Café in Imperial. “And sometimes it takes a cup of coffee.”

Both campaigns view the approach as an opportunity to “pour into the cup” of local residents. By taking the time to listen face-to-face, they hope to ensure voters feel heard, valued, and empowered ahead of the general election.

Dr. Obeso-Martinez, who met with constituents at Vintage and Coffee in El Centro, agreed that the relaxed setting provides the fuel needed for deeper, more meaningful discussions.

“Cup of coffee, hang out. It’s important because just having those one-on-one conversations, being able to hear what’s important, what’s going on with them and their lives,” Obeso-Martinez said.

While the atmosphere at these local shops remains laid back, the topics brought to the table by local residents are anything but light.

According to Obeso-Martinez, regular valley concerns quickly give way to serious legislative discussions when voters get face-to-face time with the candidates.

“The overall theme is regarding healthcare, affordability, job creation,” Obeso-Martinez noted. “But then there’s little nuances, right? Where maybe it’s a bridge that needs to be worked on, or streets, or public schools.”

Gonzalez echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that uncovering these community-specific issues is precisely how future state laws are born. He recalled a specific interaction over the weekend regarding an overlooked gap in medical coverage.

“I said, ‘Hey, here’s my email. Let’s talk so we can actually write legislation,'” Gonzalez shared. “And she was like, ‘Wait, I’m gonna be a part of that?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re the one who knows it, so if you know it, let’s write it.'”

Both candidates are hitting the trail hard with distinct objectives heading into November. Gonzalez is focused on keeping his campaign momentum hot by prioritizing visits to rural or marginalized areas that rarely see state leadership.

“There are places in our district that when we go there, they say, ‘You’re the only person in the state or federal that’s ever come to even see us or hear us,'” Gonzalez said.

Meanwhile, Obeso-Martinez is aiming for a historic blend of representation if she secures the seat in November.

“If elected, we would be the first person from Imperial County in more than 50 years, and the first woman in more than 30 years to be elected to the State Assembly, so we’re really excited,” she said.

Neither campaign shows signs of slowing down, with both candidates planning to keep the caffeine and conversations flowing at future stops across the district.

Voters looking to join an upcoming listening session can find complete schedules by visiting the official campaign websites and following the social media pages for both Gonzalez and Obeso-Martinez.

Moises Rodriguez aims to represent El Paso as an Olympian boxer

Rishi Oza

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — El Paso has a very rich boxing history, especially so in the past few years. Stephanie Han’s rise to becoming the WBA World Champion has put a spotlight on the Sun City, and other boxers are starting to rise.

Moises Rodriguez is one of those new stars. He’s been one of the top amateur boxers in the world over the past few years and has leveled up in 2026.

“We’re a small town. I feel like a lot of people overlook us,” said Rodriguez. “They don’t see big, elite, high level athletes coming out of this town. It shows that someone from the small town can be big.”

Rodriguez is currently in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center getting ready for a camp in Italy. His next tournament is in December, and with a win, he could be in prime position to be in the Olympics in 2028.

“I’m ranked number two in the United States right now in my weight and age division. So there’s just one more person ahead of me to try to make it to the Olympics. That’s the next big step,” he said.

After winning an under-18 tournament and the Gold Gloves National tournament in 2025, he now has international wins under his belt.

“I won the Helsinki tournament in Finland. And I also won in Colombia. I won gold for both those tournaments for United States.”

He’s been training with his father since he was 8 years old and his dad believes he has enough to get to LA for 2028.

“He makes me very proud as a father,” his dad told ABC-7 with a smile. “What he has accomplished throughout his whole boxing career as an amateur, it’s hard. Not any teenager can do it, but he’s been able to do it.”

ABC-7 will have the full story with Moises and his father on ABC-7 at 6 on Thursday
