14-year-old arrested for armed robbery of kids’ lemonade stand in South Boston

    BOSTON, Massachusetts (WBZ) — A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after an armed robbery at a lemonade stand in South Boston, police said.

Twelve-year-old David Byrne and his 11-year-old sister Juliette were selling lemonade on West Ninth Street Wednesday afternoon when they were approached by two kids wearing masks. Byrne said one of them flashed a gun in his waistband and then took Byrne’s cash box.

“He walked over here, he said, ‘I might need to take the box,’ and he grabbed it with one hand, and then he showed us the gun,” Byrne told CBS News Boston.

“My sister, she put her hands up and I just said, ‘You can have it.’ But after that I just was like a little annoyed because we were 12 and 11 and you shouldn’t really do that.”

The two thieves ran off with the cash box. It’s not clear how much money was inside. The box was later found empty.

Boston Police released surveillance video and photos of the two suspects the next day, hoping to generate leads in the investigation.

The 14-year-old will be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court on charges of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.

Police are still asking the public to come forward with any information about a second suspect.

“I’m pretty disgusted with it. They’re young children,” Byrne’s father Dave said shortly after the robbery. “It was in the middle of broad daylight.”

The lemonade stand reopened Friday evening, with a large crowd and Mayor Michelle Wu showing up to support the kids.

“I never thought this many people would come,” 11-year-old Juliette Byrne said. “It really makes me feel happy.”

“There’s no community like this one,” neighbor Katelyn Angotto said. “This neighborhood is fantastic.”

Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn said half of the money raised will be donated to a local organization working to prevent gun violence.

Annapolis residents face cleanup, extended power outages following severe storm

    ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (WJZ) — Two families in Annapolis are displaced after trees fell onto homes following Friday’s thunderstorm, according to city officials.

The Friday storm left thousands without power.

“About 23,000 to 24,000 power outages,” said Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management Director Preeti Emrick. “At the height of 40 road closures.”

On Saturday, crews assessed damage from the storm and cleared debris as BGE worked to restore power.

By 5 pm, Emrick said outages dropped to roughly 3,000, and road closures dropped to about 5.

“Our Department of Public Works, our Public Safety worked really hard overnight to clear a lot of the roads,” Emrick said.

Emrick said multiple communities saw the worst of the storm.

“The Annapolis area, Cape Saint Claire, the Broadneck region,” she said. “It was a really big storm, and it hit quickly.”

Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann has been in touch with BGE governmental liaison officials and notes that some substations were damaged.

“We understand that full restoration may take some time and appreciate the coordination between BGE and the City to ensure Annapolis residents and businesses can return to normal as soon as possible,” Littmann said.

Anne Arundel County respite center opened Anne Arundel County even opened Magothy River Middle School as a temporary respite center for residents impacted by power outages and Saturday’s high heat.

“Just a more open space that’s nearby where the biggest impact was so that people can get some rest, cool off, charge their essentials,” Emrick said.

Emrick adds that the county hopes all power is restored by the end of the day or as early as Sunday.

“I heard a bunch of trees go down” Annapolis neighbors watched as Friday’s storm rolled through.

“I thought that I could see clouds swirling in a way that I normally wouldn’t see when I was watching a thunderstorm,” one neighbor said.

Low-lying power lines could be seen on Severn Grove Rd in Annapolis.

Crownsville resident Nancy McCarra and her husband stopped by their son’s house in Annapolis to check on the home while he’s out of town.

“Road’s open, still no power,” she said.

McCarra said she couldn’t believe all the damage in Annapolis. She said she didn’t see any issues in Crownsville.

“Coming down General’s Highway, it looked like a little mini tornado went through,” she said.

Annapolis residential cleanup City officials said when it’s safe, residents may move downed branches to the roadway to be picked up by DPW crews who will be working in the affected neighborhoods throughout the week.

The City’s yard waste/refuse vendor will remove branches and other yard waste on the regularly scheduled pickup day.

Three Philadelphia police officers shot in Wynnefield expected to be OK, suspected shooter dead

    PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (KYW) — Three Philadelphia police officers are expected to be okay after being shot in the Wynnefield section of the city.

The shooting happened at N 54th and Arlington streets around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said the officers were responding to a shooting incident where a car “had been shot up” when a man began “engaging them multiple times.”

Bethel said the officers told the man to stand down multiple times, but he refused.

When officers went to arrest the him around 10:45 p.m., the man took out a gun, which resulted in an “exchange of gunfire,” Bethel said.

Bethel said four officers discharged their weapons. The 57-year-old man who was shot in the exchange was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m.

Friends and an attorney for the family identified the man Sunday as Eric Franks, a husband and father of two who owned several businesses in the area. They said Franks was a former Philadelphia firefighter and Marine veteran.

When contacted for a statement, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fire Department declined to comment because of the “active investigation.”

Three officers, one of whom is a sergeant, were injured and taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said Saturday night that one officer was shot in the face, another was shot in the hip, and one was shot in the leg. All are in stable condition, Parker said.

A fourth officer who fired his gun has been on the force for one year, but was not injured.

“These officers are husbands and fathers, sons and brothers, and they almost didn’t make it home tonight,” Parker said in a social media post. “Our Officers put their lives on the line every day. They go to work, and they don’t know if they’ll even come home when their shift is over. I want everyone to keep them in prayer tonight, and remember their Sacrifice for our City.”

Bethel said the officers met with Parker Saturday and were “in great spirits.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the block where the shooting happened, and expect to release more details about what led up to the shooting and the man who was killed this week.

In a statement released Sunday, Philadelphia City Council Majority Leader Katherine Gilmore Richardson (At-Large) said she visited the officers in the hospital and is “deeply saddened” by Saturday night’s shooting, which happened just two blocks from her home.

“I want to thank the first responders who acted swiftly and courageously. Their professionalism and dedication to protecting our community are deeply appreciated not just tonight but each and every day.

As more information becomes available, I will continue to work closely with the Administration and my district Councilmember and colleague, Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr., to ensure that public safety remains our top priority and that our community receives the support needed during this difficult time,” Richardson said.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also posted on social media that Pennsylvania State Police are in touch with Philadelphia Police “to offer whatever assistance is needed.”

Teen boy charged in connection with Turtle Creek triple shooting last month, police say

    TURTLE CREEK, Pennsylanvia (KDKA) — A 14-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a shooting that injured three people late last month near a Turtle Creek gas station.

Allegheny County Police said Friday that charges have been filed against a 14-year-old boy who detectives have learned was responsible for the shooting that happened near the intersection of Albert Street and Maple Street in Turtle Creek on the evening of May 26.

At the time, police said that three people were shot in the area and all were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

On Friday, police said that detectives identified the teen boy, who has not been identified, through witness interviews and surveillance video.

According to police, the boy is facing multiple juvenile charges including aggravated assault, simple assault, and possession of a firearm by a minor.

Duck found with arrow through its body near Fayette County pond

    FAYETTE COUNTY, Pennsylvania (KDKA) — A duck was found with an arrow lodged in its body near Filbert Pond in Fayette County, and now neighbors are banding together in the hopes of finding the person responsible for the act.

Residents in Redstone Township often come to feed the ducks, and there is an affinity for the animals.

“They are kind of like our pets,” said Starr Pompura, who lives near the pond. “They wander in our yard all the time, and the people come from all over to feed them.”

So, when she found that an arrow had gone through one of the ducks, it felt like the arrow had gone through them.

“I felt terrible. I felt really bad, and I just felt something needed to be done about it,” Pompura said. “I’m an avid hunter myself, and I have a bird dog; we hunt all the time, and I just find it cruel to animals to injure them and leave them injured.”

She noticed the injured mallard and took immediate action.

“We were leaving our driveway, and we were driving by and just noticed there was a duck with an arrow in it. We had stopped to see what was going on, and we thought this was wrong, so we called the Game Commission and waited for them to come out.

She helped the Game Commission remove the arrow from the duck, she said.

“We stayed for a little bit after to make sure the duck was up and walking and everything. It was swimming, and everything seemed to be okay,” Pompora recalled.

She pointed KDKA toward what she believes is the duck. It appeared to be acting differently from other birds on Saturday evening. Its wings appeared visibly wounded, and it kept its distance from other ducks.

“I just hope it continues to be okay, and there’s no infections, and it heals up properly,” she said.

Whoever did this, she said, should have been able to recognize that these aren’t just any wild ducks; they are special to community members.

It appeared the duck had been shot with a kid’s arrow, she said.

A neighbor took to Facebook to offer a reward for information leading to the person or persons responsible. The neighbor told KDKA-TV the reward was for $500. Other neighbors in Facebook comments pledged more.

“I just think that it’s great that the community can come together and try to help out to see what’s going on and to maybe try and stop this from happening again,” Pompura added.

KDKA-TV reached out to the Game Commission for comment and did not hear back.

    MONMOUTH COUNTY, New Jersey (WCBS) — While millions of soccer fans are focused on the world’s best players during the 2026 Men’s World Cup, a big piece of New Jersey is also taking centerstage.

Ten of the 16 stadiums hosting matches across North America have pitches made of Rutgers turfgrass, which is bred at a sprawling 300-acre research farm in Freehold, Monmouth County.

Years of testing and selective breeding The Rutgers research farm is where the soccer pitch starts as an experiment, using around 51,000 test plots to evaluate and find the perfect grass.

“It has to have good drought tolerance, good heat tolerance, good disease resistance,” said Stacy Bonos, with the Rutgers turfgrass breeding program.

Rutgers researchers say years of testing and selective breeding have produced turf that’s tough enough for the world stage.

A machine that imitates cleats is used on the test plots and beats them up, literally, to find the toughest grass.

“This machine will find the weak grasses really fast. The weak grasses just fall apart real quickly,” said Jim Murphy with the Rutgers plant biology department, who oversees the tolerance tests.

Not at MetLife Stadium Rutgers specializes in cool-season grass, which is better for northern regions, but New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium is one of the World Cup venues that chose to go in another direction.

“Some of the stadiums have chosen to go with a warm-season grass. In particular, Bermuda grass. So that’s what they chose at MetLife,” Bonos said.

The World Cup Final will be played at MetLife Stadium on July 19.

Still, from Philadelphia to Mexico City, Rutgers turfgrass will be under players’ feet in most of the other stadiums.

“It is really rewarding to see your hard work be useful on the world stage,” Bonos said.

Idaho State High School Rodeo Finals wrap up in Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) – The Idaho State High School Rodeo Championship Finals took place on Saturday, June 13, with the stands packed at the Bannock County Fairgrounds in Pocatello. With Nationals on the line for Idaho athletes, the top 20 of each competition competed in the short go rounds.

Today’s events included bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, boys and girls cutting, breakaway roping, bull riding, goat tying, pole bending, reined cow horse, rifle shooting, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, trap shooting, and crowning the 2026-27 IHSRA Queen.

The competitions have been fierce for seven days, with the first rodeo cow cutting rounds at the indoor arena in Pocatello on Sunday, June 7. The top four athletes in each competition advance to Nationals in July in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Increased Police Presence at Bear Lake expected during summer season

BEAR LAKE COUNTY, Idaho (KIFI) – Idaho State Police are preparing for a busy summer season at Bear Lake. Thousands of visitors travel to the vacation destination and surrounding areas every summer.

Idaho State Police said they’re mobilizing additional troops and specialized equipment to help support public safety through the busy season. The increased demand means more ISP officers completing traditional patrols in the area as well as utilizing off-highway vehicles.

ATVs will be deployed to provide access to the shoreline at Bear Lake and other off-road locations not easily reachable by patrol vehicles. Visitors can also expect to see drones deployed during periods of high traffic and activity, during search and rescue efforts, and during public safety incidents.

Troopers are also working closely with the Bear Lake Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Department of Lands and the State Department of Parks and Recreation to respond to emergencies in the area. Visitors can expect the increased presence to continue throughout the summer months.

“Haircuts with Hearts” at Sport Clips to support local children

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – Throughout the week of June 14-20, Sport Clips in Idaho Falls is turning every trim into an opportunity to support Camp Hayden and local students in need.

Beginning on Sunday, June 14, Sport Clips on East 17th Street is hosting “Haircuts with Hearts” week, where a portion of all proceeds from haircut services will go to Camp Hayden. One dollar for every full-priced MVP haircut experience and $3 for every ultimate MVP haircut will be donated.

“(this) campaign is near and dear to us because we know that not all individuals are going to have access to the same activities. And we want to bring that to different families in the community and help them to be able to have activities as a whole family and to be able to enjoy that together,” Laura Hafen, Sport Clips Area Manager, said.

Camp Hayden is a local organization working to provide accessible adventures for people with disabilities and their families. They host a variety of indoor and outdoor opportunities for disabled community members every year, regardless of ability. Sport Clips is encouraging everyone to look sharp while giving back and making a difference to those in need.

“Since it’s benefiting Camp Hayden, it’s a pretty awesome little spot. I mean, giving kids, opportunities that they might not normally have in an understanding, supportive environment. So I think it’s great when we can help out the kids,” Bryan Shumway, a longtime patron, said.

Sport Clips will also have QR codes available for clients to donate.

The business is also collecting hair care products from purchases in store for District 93 school closets to help students who may not have easy access to hair products at home.

The idea of came to Sport Clips’ manager, Vi Moon, when she saw her son getting ready.

“So as many people know, 16 year olds are very particular about their hair. And it kind of just hit me one day as (my son) was loading up his hair with products and making sure that everything was ready for his school day, (and) that some people probably don’t have the opportunity to have those extra products for things that kids want daily,” Moon said.

The fundraisers go on until June 20, and clients who donate will receive a coupon for their next visit.

Car Show in Pocatello Fundraises for Senior Activity Center

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) – The Senior Activity Center hosted their annual Oldies Rod and Custom Car Show on June 13, bringing out 85 cars and hundreds of community members. Organizers said the car show is one of two major fundraisers the organization hosts, bringing in extra money for programs and services offered by the local non-profit.

“The money allows us to do some of the extra things and fill in the gaps where our funding doesn’t meet,” said Tara Contreras, Executive Director of the Senior Activity Center. “This has been incredible, it just speaks to the amazing car community that we have that they all showed up.”

Contreras said the car show has grown significantly since last year. With last year’s show bringing in 40 cars to vote on and admire, this year’s event had 85 entries. She said the car owners traveled from Idaho Falls, American Falls, Blackfoot, Preston, Malad and even some from Utah.

Oldies Rod and Custom Car Show at Outer Limits Fun Zone, June 13

Many local businesses helped to sponsor the car show, with other locals donating over $5000 in raffle prizes. Previously, the event was held at the Center Street underpass grass area, but with the current construction, the organizers had to find a new location. Leaders at Outer Limits Fun Zone became involved and offered their large parking lot for the event.

Contreras said they already have plans for a bigger and better car show next year. During her first year leading the event, the director said she was “blown away.”

“I’ve been going and visiting with people at Poky Cars and Coffee, trying to get embedded with the local car community and talking to them about the Senior Activity Center and our cause,” she said. “They don’t know who we are or what we do or the people we serve, so we’ve really tried to promote the event and get great partners.”

Through word of mouth and promotion work, the Senior Activity Center hosted a record-breaking car show with an astounding turnout. Many cars also drove through the parking lot unregistered, eager to join the show with their vehicles. Prizes and awards were given to the winners of different competitions, including the participant’s choice award. The winner of participant’s choice gets the honor of being printed on the following years’ T-shirts.

The Senior Activity Center will host their golf tournament fundraiser in September.

“I would like to thank all of our car community, the participants, Stacy with Outer Limits, Gate City Insurance’s Josh Randall who matched donation, and all of our volunteers,” Contreras said. “Thank you so much.”
