City of San Luis offers summer activities of all ages

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) – The City of San Luis is kicking off its summer season with a variety of recreational and educational programs designed for residents of all ages.

The summer programs include several camps and access to the municipal pool.

In addition, the City wants to promote community engagement, active lifestyles, and safe summer recreation throughout the season.

Some of the children received certificates for attending their swimming classes Thursday morning.

“This summer, we have activities for all the community, we are hosting a summer camp for ages seven to nine, next one for ages eight to 12. Our pool is also open to the community, offering swimming lessons,” said Francia Alonso, Public Information Officer for the City of San Luis.

Columbia mayor involved in crash that shut down busy intersection

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe said Thursday afternoon that she was OK after her car was in a crash involving a city bus.

The crash shut down College Avenue at University Avenue at about 4 p.m. Thursday, according to an alert sent by Boone County emergency dispatchers. It wasn’t clear whether anyone on the bus was hurt. Damage was visible on Buffaloe’s vehicle and on the bus.

The scene was clear by about 5 p.m.

Buffaloe told ABC 17 News that a car ran a red light and hit her vehicle, which then hit a city bus. The car that hit Buffaloe was traveling south on College, she said.

“They hit the rear passenger side of my car, and it pushed me into the front of the bus, driver’s side,” Buffaloe wrote in a text message.

Police officers at the scene declined to comment on the details of the crash.

2 EPISD students spell their way to National Spanish Spelling Bee

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Two El Paso Independent School District students will attend the National Spanish Spelling Bee this year, the district said. They will compete against the top Spanish spellers from across the country.

Emiliano Ferrán Martínez Caloca from Wiggs Middle School and Shaheli De Silva from the Young Women’s Academy secured their spots at the national competition after placing among the top 10 finishers at the 2026 Texas State Spanish Spelling Bee, EPISD said.

The Spanish spelling bee challenges students’ vocabulary, spelling and language proficiency.

Martínez Caloca finished sixth in the state competition and De Silva placed ninth, the district said. In total, 47 spellers competed in the state competition.

“We are incredibly proud of Emiliano and Shaheli for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Chief Academic Officer Al Garcia. “Their hard work, perseverance, and passion for learning have earned them the opportunity to compete on a national stage.”

The district said this won’t be the students’ first spelling bee milestone. The two actually tied for first place at EPISD’s Spanish Spelling Bee for the third year in a row,

De Silva also spelled her way to the top as the Regional English Spelling Bee Champion, EPISD said.

The National Spanish Spelling Bee takes place in Albuquerque July 10-11.

Galloping Goose Motorcyle Club members plead guilty to crimes related to deadly Lake of the Ozarks brawl

Three members of the Galloping Goose Motorcycle Club have pleaded guilty in federal court to racketeering and other charges related to a deadly brawl outside a Lake of the Ozarks bar and grill in July 2021.

Tonka Way Con Ponder, 55, pleaded guilty on May 13 to two counts of a crime of violence in aid of racketeering, one count of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence in aid of racketeering, one count of shooting a gun in furtherance of a crime of violence, three methamphetamine-related charges and two counts of having an unregistered gun.

Tretch Lawrence, 50, pleaded guilty to one count of a crime of violence in aid of racketeering and a count of attempted extortion on Wednesday.

Keith Nolen, 36, pleaded guilty May 5 to one count of a crime of violence in aid of racketeering, a count of conspiracy to commit a crime of violence in aid of racketeering and a count of being a felon in possession of a gun.

An indictment filed in June 2024 alleged that Ponder was the leader of the motorcycle club’s Lake of the Ozarks chapter.

A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office states that Ponder, Nolen and Lawrence were part of an assault on members of the Iron Celtics Motorcycle Association in July 2021 outside Casablanca Pub and Grille. A man identified in court documents as “B.C.” was fatally shot in the confrontation.

Investigators alleged after the shooting that security video from outside the pub showed Ponder pull out a gun and shoot another man after a gun was pointed at him.

The men also admitted to assaulting Iron Celtics members in another confrontation at the Chuckwagon Cafe in Camdenton in December 2021.

Ponder and Nolen also pleaded guilty to conspiring with other members of the Galloping Goose club to attack members of the Iron Celtics and the Mongols Motorcycle Club, leading to the deadly confrontation outside Casablanca, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Ponder also admitted to selling methamphetamine and owning a silencer, the release states.

Lawrence admitted to threatening two Iron Celtics members at their home and demanding money from them, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Jefferson City business owner accused of harboring migrants in ‘dangerous’ building

A Jefferson City business owner who was already accused of withholding more than $935,000 in employee wages has been charged in federal court with harboring several people with “an illegal immigration status.”

Federal court documents accuse Danny Cheng — who owns Dragon Kitchen in the 2200 block of Missouri Boulevard – of running a “dormitory” of people who were not citizens in the 800 block of Crestmere Court.

Court documents say the home in which the migrants stayed was determined to be dangerous and declared a nuisance, per Jefferson City’s ordinances.

Details in the court documents described more than one employee working 12 hours per day, six days a week at the restaurant and were not given paystubs. Migrants were described as being from China and Mexico in the statement.

A search warrant was served at the Crestmere Court building on Tuesday, and law enforcement noted that a document written in Mandarin and Spanish was taped to a wall stating it was for employee residence only.

The document also included rules, which included employees needing to be ready for work at 9:40 a.m. and telling the residents “not to gather in the front yard to prevent attracting attention from the police.”

At least five people were seen living in the home, according to the probable cause statement.

Chain-Reaction Crash on Southbound I-15 sends two to hospital

FORT HALL, Idaho (KIFI) — Two people were hospitalized Thursday morning following a chain-reaction, four-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 15 near Fort Hall.

The crash happened around 10:39 a.m. on the southbound I-15 at milepost 84 in Bingham County.

ISP says that the incident began when a 27-year-old Pocatello man driving south in a 2018 Toyota RAV4 attempted to use a median crossover. As the RAV4 made the maneuver, it was struck by a southbound Ford Maverick driven by an 84-year-old man, also from Pocatello.

The initial crash triggered a chain reaction. The Maverick was subsequently struck by a southbound 2022 BMW driven by a 65-year-old male driver with a 63-year-old female passenger, both from Chubbuck. Immediately after, the BMW was hit by a 2026 Genesis driven by a 60-year-old man from Cardiff, California, who was traveling with a 59-year-old female passenger from San Diego.

Ground ambulances rushed the driver of the Ford Maverick and the female passenger of the Genesis to a local hospital. ISP confirmed that everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

The left lane of southbound I-15 was blocked for approximately one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Bobbie Jo Daily seeks Yuma County Superior Court Clerk position

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Bobbie Jo Daily is running for Yuma County Superior Court Clerk. She says she has the knowledge and experience to help further advance the office of the Yuma County Superior Court.

Daily is a lifelong resident and the current Chief Deputy Clerk of Yuma County. She says she wants to give Yuma a voice at the table.

“I have learned a lot, and I want to be able to use all the experience and knowledge that I have to advance this office further. I think it’s important that Yuma County has a voice at the table,” Daily said.

Daily brings 15 years of municipal experience and says she hopes to use that background to serve the community in this new role.

“My background is the clerk’s office. I’ve been there for 15 years. For the past eight years, I’ve been the Chief Deputy Clerk, which is a position that helps oversee the daily operations,” Daily said.

Daily says she hopes to serve her community with compassion and integrity.

“Being able to serve my community, I mean you’re serving people who are going through good times and hard times, being able to do that through compassion, integrity, and professionalism,” Daily said.

Daily will be running against Malba Alvarez in the Arizona primary on July 21. The last day to register to vote is next Monday, June 22.

Moberly man accused of stealing radar from deputy’s patrol vehicle

A Moberly man who was already booked in the Randolph County Jail has been charged with two felonies.

Ross Van Cleve, 46, was charged on Thursday with felony stealing and second-degree burglary. He is being held on a $10,000 bond. He was charged earlier this week with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday in both cases.

The probable cause statement says a Randolph County deputy had his patrol vehicle parked at a location for repairs since March 26, and the shop owner told them on April 7 that it looked like someone broke into the vehicle.  A radar and other items totaling $3,930 were stolen, the statement says.

Van Cleve was being interviewed for his other court case when law enforcement found several items that matched the deputy’s stolen items, including the radar, the statement says.

Van Cleve allegedly told authorities that “it was probably him that stole the items” but he did not remember doing so, the statement says.

Crews battle vegetation fire in Holtville

HOLTVILLE, Calif. (KYMA) – The blaze was reported Wednesday night, prompting a large response from both city and county fire units.

Responding engines included Imperial County Fire Department, El Centro Fire Department, NAF-El Centro Fire, Brawley Fire Department, Calipatria Fire Department, Calipatria State Prison Fire Department, and Holtville Fire Department.

Firefighters are working to contain the flames and protect nearby property. So far, the fire has burned 50 acres.

City of Holtville Fire Chief Alex Silva said the call came in around 9 p.m., and by the time her arrived, it was a fully involved fire that was spreading.

“Well, we had it knocked down this morning about 4 o’clock, and then the wind picked up and it’s, it spotted north of our location and then took off to the rest of the vegetation,” Silva told KYMA.

One Imperial Irrigation District (IID) employee told our newsroom that he was there to check out the property, as the fire was right next to the IID dump site, where brush, branches and more that have been cleared are discarded.

KYMA was told that a few horses from a neighboring home were loaded onto a trailer and moved as a precaution, and we observed a couple of dogs running away from the fire. So far, no properties have been damaged by the fire.

“The Concern at the during the night was the city of Holtville’s wastewater treatment plant, and we didn’t want that to catch on fire, of course, so that was our priority,” Silva answered. “And then again when the fire jumped north, we came out and aggressively attacked it,” he said.
