DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Newly released body camera video from the Iowa State Patrol shows the moment troopers took former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts into custody last year.
Roberts was arrested, charged and pleaded guilty to falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen and illegal possession of firearms. He’s since been sentenced to two years in federal prison and transferred to a facility in Illinois.
The 5-minute video begins with Iowa State Patrol troopers and a K-9 officer moving through a wooded area on the south side of Des Moines after Roberts abandoned his car and ran from law enforcement.
Roberts is then instructed to walk toward police. Wearing a suit, he emerges with his arms up and a cell phone in one hand.
Officers tell him not to resist the handcuffs.
“Hey, hey, hey, Ian, don’t make it hard now, bud. Hey, come on, you did the right thing, don’t be struggling now,” one trooper says.
Roberts speaks into his phone, which was on a call with an unidentified woman when troopers reached him.
He mentions Phil Roeder, a spokesperson for Des Moines Public Schools.
Roberts is then walked out of the woods and placed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle.
