MILWAUKEE (WISN) — As the NBA draft approaches, Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam has said he wants Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future resolved by then, whether through re-signing or trading the two-time MVP.
ESPN reports that the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat are finalists in a potential trade for Antetokounmpo, leaving Bucks fans grappling with the possibility of Milwaukee moving forward without their star player.
Monday, fans reflected on Antetokounmpo’s contributions to the team and the city, with some hoping he stays and others accepting the possibility of his departure.
“Disappointed,” Cleo Hood, a Bucks fan, said when asked about the prospect of Antetokounmpo being traded.
“You don’t want to see him go?” Hood was asked.
“No, no. I think they got another championship if they could get him the supporting cast that he needs,” Hood said.
Other fans expressed a different perspective, accepting that the Greek Freak may be heading elsewhere
“Giannis has given everything to the city, so he means a lot, but I kind of feel like it’s time,” Bucks fan David Ullsperger said. “I said last year it might be time, so get what we can get for him, and it’s time to move on.”
Antetokounmpo’s impact extends beyond Milwaukee, resonating with fans across the world.
“Him being in the NBA doing amazing things for the Bucks, it’s a big thing for the Greek community,” said Iosif Prosiliakos, a Bucks fan from Chicago.
The Prosiliakos family, regular attendees of the Bucks’ Greek Night, shared their thoughts on the trade talks.
“I want what’s best for him, honestly,” Pano Prosiliakos said. “I would say I’m more of a Giannis fan than a Bucks fan, so if he can go to a championship-contending team, I think that’ll be really good for him.”
Despite the tension surrounding the trade discussions, Bucks fans remain deeply appreciative of Antetokounmpo’s legacy.
“My blood is Giannis’ blood,” said David Powell, a Bucks fan.
When asked if he wanted to see Antetokounmpo leave, Powell responded, “No, no. It’s a loyal friendship.”
Even fans who are ready to move on from Antetokounmpo acknowledge that a trade would come with sadness, as it would mean saying goodbye to one of the greatest players to ever wear a Bucks uniform.
