SALUDA, North Carolina (WLOS) — A neighbor worried that a killer may still be on the loose is calling on Polk County authorities to update residents on the investigation into a double homicide that occurred last weekend.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced via social media Thursday that an 80-year-old couple was identified as the two victims of a homicide in Saluda. Authorities confirmed their identities as Robert and Wendy Peck, whose home on West Fork Creek Road burned Sunday. Investigators have still not released a cause of death.

News 13 spoke with a neighbor who called 911 after spotting the fire. She agreed to speak only on the condition that she remain anonymous.

“I saw the fire. I rushed down to get to my house, and we got a signal when we got into the driveway, and she called 911,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor said a friend of hers made the emergency call. The next morning, after learning that Robert and Wendy Peck had died, that neighbor talked with a detective.

“He asked me if I had seen anybody on the property. I said, ‘No,'” the neighbor said.

Days after the fire, News 13 spotted a deputy parked in the driveway of the deceased couple’s home in Saluda. Detectives continue to investigate, while Polk County Sheriff Tim Wright urges residents to remain vigilant.

“I’m terrified. And I know my neighbors are, too,” the anonymous neighbor said. “We want to know that they have a suspect, and knowing that they don’t have any suspects is very unnerving.” Polk County Sheriff Tim Wright did not return News 13’s request for an interview.

“It’s a huge loss for this community. They were very involved,” said Melissa Gillespie, co-owner of Wakey Monkey Coffee Shop.

Melissa and Eric Gillespie knew the Pecks. The couple, they said, were regular customers of their coffee shop, and Wendy had visited the day before her death.

“Wendy had been in Friday morning as well as Saturday morning,” Melissa Gillespie added.

The Pecks were known for their service to the community. “They volunteered at our local elementary school in the after-school program,” Gillespie said. They started a community free meal program and were very devoted to community service work with their church. Eric Gillespie struggled to understand why anyone would want to harm them.

“I don’t know why anyone could even say a bad word about them, much less do anything to them,” he said.

As investigators continue to search for answers, the Gillespies are urging anyone with information to come forward.

SAN LEANDRO, California (KPIX) — Officials in San Leandro are urging residents to avoid a portion of the Bay Trail after a dead gray whale washed ashore.

On Thursday, the city said the whale was found along the shoreline south of Marina Park. Experts said the whale is an adult male, measuring about 12 meters (39.3 feet) in length.

In a video posted on the city’s social media, the city said it is coordinating with regional and federal marine wildlife agencies on the response. The California Academy of Sciences and the National Marine Fisheries Service will conduct a necropsy to determine the whale’s cause of death and support ongoing research into the West Coast’s declining gray whale populations.

“The city will continue working closely with environmental and wildlife partners to ensure the situation is handled safely and responsibly,” officials said.

Following the necropsy, the whale would be allowed to naturally decompose due to the shoreline location and limited marine access in the area, with the city calling the option “the safest and most environmentally appropriate.”

Experts told the city while the whale poses no risk to residents, the public is urged to avoid the area while work is taking place.

Investigators probe deadly Dallas blast as data shows natural gas leaks persist

By Brian New

DALLAS, Texas (KTVT) — A large explosion and fire at a Dallas apartment building Thursday killed three people, and injured and displaced several others. But even as recovery efforts have ended, an investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board is still underway to answer questions about what went wrong.

The CBS News Texas I-Team has learned before the explosion, the apartment building located in the 400 block of East 9th Street was for sale and in escrow. The potential buyer planned to convert it into new low-income housing and had hired engineering firm, ECS Southwest, LLP to test the property’s soil. A manager for ECS told the I-Team they had hired a drilling company to bore through the concrete and pull samples.

Thursday afternoon, Atmos said a construction crew hit a gas line, which led to the subsequent explosion.

The big question investigators are now looking into: was 811 called before digging? And if so, were the gas lines accurately marked? Texas state law requires companies call the Texas811 nonprofit before digging on any project to prevent damage to gas and water pipes.

Data shows gas leaks remain problem in North Texas While Thursday’s incident may feel rare, last year alone Dallas recorded 924 major gas leaks classified as Grade 1, the most severe level. Nearly half were caused by third-party contractors digging into the ground.

“Far and away, third-party strikes are the biggest hazard,” said Abe Scarr, energy and utilities program director for the Public Interest Research Group. “The question is, why aren’t utilities doing more to limit them?”

Scarr said that while these accidents are unintentional, they are not unavoidable.

An April I-Team investigation found that since 2019, the rate of hazardous leaks per mile of main pipeline in Atmos’ Mid‑Tex division has increased. At the time, Atmos said the rise reflects better leak detection and faster repairs, not worsening conditions.

Man sentenced to life for 5-hour assault and rape of woman he met through Nextdoor

CANTON, Georgia (WUPA) — A 23-year-old Canton man has been sentenced to life in prison for assaulting and raping a woman whom he had arranged to come and clean his apartment.

Prosecutors say that Ezekiel Lamar Jackson sexually assaulted the victim multiple times and threatened to kill her if she tried to leave over the course of five hours on April 6.

The Canton Police Department began an investigation on that day after Northside Hospital reported a patient who had been attacked.

Investigators say the victim had responded to a Nextdoor post about an apartment cleaning the day before, setting up an appointment with Jackson the morning of April 6 to see the scope of the job.

While she was in the bathroom, prosecutors say Jackson stabbed her in the face and eye with a screwdriver, strangled her to the point where she felt she was losing consciousness, and prevented her from screaming for help by forcing his fingers down her throat.

The victim eventually was able to persuade Jackson to take her to the hospital, allegedly agreeing to tell the staff that she had fallen and hit her face on a counter. There, physicians discovered that she had suffered an orbital fracture and brain bleeds.

Jackson was still in the hospital’s waiting room when police arrived to arrest him.

While searching the man’s phone, investigators say they found 15 responses to his Nextdoor post. Jackson had ignored the rest, which were from men or employees of larger cleaning companies, only responding to the victim’s message.

“Evidence suggests this defendant intentionally targeted this victim because she was a woman working alone,” said Cherokee County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Chavis. “He is a dangerous man, and the brutality of his actions is shocking. The victim demonstrated great courage and strength, and ultimately saved her own life in the face of such evil.”

On Thursday, Jackson pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, three counts of aggravated sodomy, kidnapping, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery, and terroristic threats.

A judge sentenced him to life with the possibility of parole, followed by 40 years of probation.

“The defendant’s conduct was torturous and horrific,” said District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway. “For five hours, this victim endured unimaginable violence. A sentence of life in prison is the only appropriate outcome for the deeply disturbing actions of this defendant.”

As part of the sentence, Jackson is required to pay restitution and have no contact with the victim. While on probation, he is barred from Georgia except for Effingham County and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Jackson must also register as a sex offender and receive psychosexual and mental health evaluations and treatments.

ATLANTA (WUPA) — A Georgia man is facing multiple charges after police say he stole an ambulance and drove it down a Marietta road while drinking a beer.

Eric Jordan has been in custody at the Cobb County Jail since his arrest on May 16.

According to a police narrative obtained by CBS News Atlanta, an officer was working part-time at the Wellstar Kennestone Emergency Department on Cherry Street when he spotted a man, later identified as Jordan, trying to walk into the hospital’s EMS bay.

Shortly after the officer spoke with the man, he heard a call about a person who matched Jordan’s description who was accused of stealing an ambulance from a nearby RaceTrac.

The officer detained Jordan, placing him in handcuffs and taking him to the back of the hospital. It’s there that he reported meeting the EMT driver of the stolen ambulance, who identified Jordan as the one who took the vehicle.

In the report, the officer says he was given a video showing Jordan drinking a beer and driving the ambulance without his seatbelt on southbound on Church Street.

When the officer questioned Jordan about his alleged actions, he wrote that the man told him he “stole the ambulance for the purpose of saving the world.”

Jordan is now charged with theft by taking, use of safety belts in passenger vehicles, driving with a suspended license, an open container violation, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Absolutely Colorado: Michigan resident donates $2,500 in gas cards to Colorado Springs seniors

Danny Mata

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — A Michigan resident has donated $2,500 in gas gift cards to Silver Key Senior Services in Colorado Springs. The donation will help the nonprofit continue its transportation program for older adults struggling with rising fuel costs.

Laurie Applebaum, who lives near Detroit, sought a nonprofit that could use a significant amount of gift card money she had. Her search led her to Silver Key Senior Services, which provides transportation and Meals on Wheels programs for older adults in the Colorado Springs area, all the way Monument and Palmer Lake.

Silver Key Senior Services was experiencing increased challenges due to the cost of gas, which affects its ability to maintain vehicle operations for its programs. Seth Chapin, director of transportation at Key Senior Services, expressed excitement about the donation, stating he “danced a little bit inside” upon hearing the news.

Chapin detailed the services provided by the organization. “Any appointment from a doctor’s appointment, dentists; maybe they want to go get their hair done every Friday. We can provide that ride,” Chapin said.

The donation consisted of gas gift cards, each worth $500, totaling $2,500.

Applebaum had initially faced difficulty finding an organization to accept the donation. She discovered Silver Key after seeing a KRDO13 news story about the organization.

Applebaum confirmed during a phone interview with KRDO13 that she has no ties to Colorado, but wanted to find a way to help. She said Silver Key was an ideal recipient because it allowed her to assist many people with a single donation.

Chapin noted that the donation means the organization “were able to help more people for a longer period of time.” He estimated the donation would directly benefit “well more than 100 people.”

Teton Dam Royalty Crowned for 2026

Abi Martin

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) – Rexburg is remembering the Collapse of the Teton Dam that happened 50 years ago next week.

The week of commemorating the flood began tonight with the crowning of the Teton Dam royalty.

Verla Archibald lived through the flood and was crowned the teton dam flood queen 2026.

The event featured a song about what it was like to clean up the mud left in the flood’s wake. She remembers some of the most unique things she found after the flood.

“My husband kept finding a left boot, cowboy boots, and he came and he had a great big pile of them, and he said, surely there’s got to be a right foot somewhere,” Archibald said. “But we found out they were from the army store, and the other boot was on the shelf. “

There will be events happening all next week, including A 70s fashion show, a car show, even a float trip down the Teton River from the dam site.

DEQ Continues Enforcement Over 6,000-Tire Pile on Central Oregon Property

Harley Coldiron

Update: Added response from local tire company, which says it immediately stopped working with the property owner after allegations surfaced.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Oregon environmental regulators say they remain focused on enforcing action against Martin Soto Hernandez, who is accused of illegally storing 6,000 waste tires that remain piled on his rural Central Oregon property.

A DEQ official said in a Dec. 30 notice sent by certified mail that Martin Hernandez Soto of Prineville was previously issued a warning letter last May directing him to correct the violation.

Storing so many tires on a property on Fort Rock Road, east of Horse Ridge and south of Highway 20, without complying with permit requirements, “poses a risk to human health and the environment, including the risk of fire,” DEQ Office of Compliance and Enforcement Interim Manager Erin Saylor wrote.

“You have been storing and processing approximately 6,000 waste tires at your property since at least the spring of this year (2025),” she told Soto in the notice.

Soto has appealed the fine, DEQ Public Affairs Specialist Antony Sparrow told KTVZ News.

A 2024 Google Earth aerial view of 57810 Fort Rock Road in Bend, where you can see thousands of waste tires piled up.

Questions emerge about who brought tires to the site

The investigation has also raised new questions about who was working with Soto to dump tires at the location. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality confirmed it recently received an email from a concerned citizen regarding Tires USA using the site as a drop-off location and working with Soto.

KTVZ News independently obtained a series of emails and invoices that appear to show Tires USA working with Soto and using the site to drop off trailers full of tires. In one email to a customer, Newman wrote, “I do need to swap/exchange the 2 in Bend this week. There are 2 empty trailers on site in 57810 Fort Rock Road Bend Oregon 97701.”

That is the location where Soto is allegedly illegally storing 6,000 tires.

However, Tires USA owner Jason Newman said he immediately stopped working with Soto when he realized the operation was likely illegal. Newman told KTVZ News that Soto employed illegal immigrants and had another suspect business in Klamath Falls, reiterating that he wanted nothing to do with the business.

DEQ: Oregon enforcement remains focused on the property owner

The DEQ said it is aware of the international investigations and the accusations leveled against Newman. However, the agency said its enforcement efforts in Oregon remain focused on a much narrower issue: the conditions currently present on the Fort Rock Road property.

“The email did not include information about any environmental issue immediately occurring outside of the waste tire storage on Mr. Hernandez’s property, which DEQ is already enforcing,” the agency said in a statement.

Instead, regulators say responsibility rests with the property’s owner.

“Because Martin is the owner of the property, he is the party responsible for proper storage and disposal of the waste tires,” DEQ said.

That distinction is important because DEQ’s enforcement authority is tied to the property and its owner, regardless of who may have been involved in bringing tires to the site.

The Oregon DEQ said attempts to reach Newman were unsuccessful.

Public complaints continue to drive environmental investigations

While DEQ says its attention remains fixed on the Fort Rock Road site, officials emphasized that public complaints continue to play an important role in environmental enforcement.

“Reports of pollution from Oregonians are an important element of the enforcement of Oregon’s environmental laws,” the agency said.

DEQ added that if it receives information about environmental violations connected to Newman outside the Fort Rock Road property, it has the authority to investigate.

Residents can submit environmental complaints through DEQ’s online reporting system.
