7yr-old breaks brothers’ record and becomes the youngest person ever to summit El Capitan

Michael Logerwell

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) – What were you doing on your 7th birthday? Eating sheet cake at the bowling alley? Yeah, me too.

Joey Danger Evermore can’t relate because he turned 7 years old while summiting El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

“So amazing,” Joey said, describing reaching the summit. “We got to the top [and] we ate military food.”

With that ascent, Joey became the youngest ever to summit El Capitan, beating out his two older brothers, Sam and Sylvan, who both did it at 8 years old.

“In a way he’s the least afraid that we’ve ever seen,” Joe Evermore, the father, said. “Joey’s just trusting the lines, and it’s amazing to see that he’s really just having fun up there when we’re climbing.”

Like any major climb, this one had some ups and downs, even at what was supposed to be the pinnacle

“This one kind of sucked,” said Sylvan, chiming in.

“So there’s a big rescue. we got within one pitch of the summit, and like, the sun was setting, and YOSAR had this giant rescue. It was 2000ft below us, but they shut down the entire route,” Joe explained.

YOSAR is Yosemite Search and Rescue.

However, even without the rescue hold-up, the summit still probably would’ve been overshadowed by even bigger news

During the climb, along with Joey’s birthday, the family had a gender reveal, and Joey, Sylvan, and Sam all learned they were going to have a new baby sister.

“When it said girl, I thought the portal edge was going to tip over and dump us all because the boys went so wild on the ledge and jumping up and down,” Joe recalled, smiling.

Joe said he hopes this story inspires other fathers to take their kids into the great outdoors, but maybe start a little easier than El Capitan.

Workers in Calexico protest over new contract

Carolina Garcia

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) – Dozens of workers in Calexico are asking for a pay raise and a new contract.

The workers belong to two different groups, including City of Calexico Administrative staff and Calexico Water Department employees.

They say their contract has not been renewed for a year.

They’re calling for negotiations that reflect current economic conditions and the City of Calexico’s cost of living.

“They want to give us a two-year contract with a one-time check for every year only. They don’t want to give us increases in our wages…and that’s why we weren’t. We weren’t like they said the the price of gas is going up,” said Jesus Navarro, Operators President for SEIU. “The grocery prices are going up and then, they’re going to go up even higher.”

They said they will protest at all City Council meetings until a labor agreement is reached.

Fallen light pole after crash causes road closure in Columbia

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A road at a highly traveled roundabout in Columbia was closed after a crash led to a light pole falling in the street.

Country Wood Road was closed after a non-injury crash occurred. A Columbia Police Officer at the scene did not give a timeframe for how long the road would be closed off.

Boone County Joint Communications sent a notification at 7:05 p.m. stating that a light pole was down at West Vawter School Road and South Old Mill Creek Road. Both of those roads share a roundabout with Country Wood Road.

A Water and Light spokesman said at 8:41 p.m. that the pole was moved.

High gas prices hurting Memorial Day travelers

Rishi Oza

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — According to the American Automobile Association, gas prices are at a four-year high in the United States this Memorial Day Weekend.

The national average is at $4.55 per gallon. Texas is lower at $4.09, but it’s still making an impact for travelers.

“It’s a lot more than it used to be because we would pay usually about half that,” said Randy Cox. Him and his wife were at the end of a 19-hour road trip from Idaho. They said they had to keep track of when they were getting paid to make sure they could afford to make the trip.

“It’s a little discouraging because I love taking road trips, and that’s kind of the American thing is being able to get on the road and just go and enjoy time with the family and go places,” said Cox. “That’s why we have our national parks, and it’s making it harder to want to be able to go out there because how much it costs just to get from one spot to the next.”

Cox said that in Idaho they had to pay nearly $35 for gas after just an hour and a half of driving.

Cox hasn’t seen many crazy drivers yet, but he thinks it’s because less people are out on the roads with the high prices.

“Usually there’s people going crazy all over the roads, and there were a lot more people just driving cautious and not really like pulling hard away from trucks and stuff like that.”

Lake-area law enforcement ramps up efforts for holiday weekend

Olivia Hayes

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s counting period for the Memorial Day holiday weekend kicked off at 6 p.m. Friday.

“Every available trooper will be on the road or on the water, enforcing Missouri laws and assisting those in need. Troopers on the roadways will focus their attention on hazardous moving violations, speed violations, and impaired drivers. The Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) during Memorial Day weekend,” a press release from MSHP says.

The period runs through 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Whether it’s on the boat or on the water law enforcement expects the weekend to come with its challenges, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks, a summer hot spot for many travelers in the Midwest.

Marine State Trooper Dylan Green and Camden County Sgt. Stephen Riner said driving and boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be the biggest thing they are looking for.

“Usually what we’re seeing is the slurred speech, the inability to grab the appropriate items that we ask for, such as life jackets or IDs,” Green said.

The signs may change a bit with the different terrain.

“Inconsistent driving behavior, speed up, slow down, the exaggerated swerving, they’ll have their brights on because they’re having trouble seeing and that can be a sign of that type of impairment,” Riner said.

While seatbelts are required in the car, they aren’t required on a boat and neither is wearing a life jacket. However, one life jacket has to be accessible for every person on board, according to Green.

“What is accessibility? Can’t be in a locked compartment,” Green said.

Violators of the life jacket rule could receive a citation or even have their voyage terminated until they have the proper safety gear on board.

Riner urged drivers to reconsider drinking and driving this weekend, and warned sober drivers to stay alert for those that may be impaired on the roadways.

“We live in the age of Uber, Lyft and taxi cabs, please don’t drive. It isn’t worth the risk,” Riner said. “If you are not partaking in any of that and you’re just trying to go to work today or throughout the weekend, be very careful because unfortunately, those people that do take that risk are going to be out.”

Green said boaters should also watch out for debris in the water after recent storms in the Mid-Missouri area.

The release says during last year’s holiday weekend, there were 868 crashes around the state that injured 356 people and killed four. There were 81 people arrested for driving while intoxicated.

MSHP also recorded three boating crashes during last year’s counting period.

Scam alert: El Paso County Sheriff’s Office warns about fake warrant calls

Gabrielle Lopez

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — With increased scam calls, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office made a public warning about people claiming to be members of the sheriff’s office.

Friday, EPCSO said callers are telling residents they have an active warrant and have to pay to avoid arrest.

The scammers ask for payment over the phone, through text or mobile apps, the sheriff’s office said. Scammers also use fake numbers to make it look like the call comes from a legitimate law enforcement agency.

“We will never call you to demand payment for a warrant, nor will we request payment over the phone, by text, or through any type of app,” EPCSO said in a statement.

The sheriff’s office suggested residents to hang up and not send any personal or financial information.

Additionally, you can call the sheriff’s office or search through its website to confirm whether you have an active warrant.

EPCSO said any call that creates a sense of urgency or threatens arrest is a strong indicator of a scam.

Heavy Memorial Day traffic causing dangerous conditions on East Idaho roads

Par Kermani

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (KIFI) — Memorial Day weekend traffic is already causing major slowdowns and dangerous driving conditions across East Idaho as thousands of travelers head out for the holiday weekend.

Multiple Accidents Stall Traffic Along I-15 Northbound

RVs, trailers, and campers packed Interstate 15 on Thursday as drivers made their way toward campgrounds, mountains, and holiday destinations across the region.

According to the Idaho State Police, the trailer of a semitruck overturned along Interstate 15 around 1:11 p.m. Thursday.

There was another crash involving two vehicles near the I-15 Blackfoot rest area. The two vehicles came to a stop in the median, backing up traffic for miles and causing major delays through the area.

Troopers are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert, and prepare for increased congestion throughout the holiday weekend.

AAA: High Pump Prices Don’t Deter Travelers

The busy travel weekend is also expected to come with higher costs at the pump.

Gas prices in Idaho are hovering around $4.70 per gallon heading into Memorial Day weekend. Despite the higher fuel prices, AAA says travel demand remains strong, with nearly 268,000 Idahoans expected to travel during the holiday weekend.

Fortunately, AAA Idaho spokesman Matthew Conde says gas prices in the Gem State won’t hit your wallet nearly as much as in other destinations.

“We’re not in the top ten for the most expensive. California is sitting at $6.15 a gallon today,” says Conde. “So good news, bad news. But the interesting thing, I think we did some research and we found that hotel prices, car rental prices this time around, are actually a little cheaper than they were last year. And so you have to keep in mind that a lot of folks were making those purchases, making those reservations well before all this conflict happened. And so, right now, we would say that the Memorial Day trips are pretty much locked in.”

Columbia man charged with 7 counts of DWI in I-70 crash from April 3

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man was charged with seven counts of driving while intoxicated in an April 3 crash on Interstate 70 that caused serious injuries.

Samuel Jacob Creasy was charged on Friday. He was arrested in April and posted a $1,500 bond. An initial court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The probable cause statement says vehicles were crashed near the 122.8-mile marker and that Creasy admitted to troopers that he caused the crash and that it was his fault. A breath test was conducted at the scene and his blood alcohol content was .122, the statement says.

Another test was conducted about an hour later and his BAC was then .11, the statement says. The legal limit to drive is .08.

Previous reporting indicates that Creasy drove a 2021 Ram 3500 on the Interstate 70 when he tried passing two vehicles and ended up hitting both.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report shows three people in the crash were seriously injured and four had minor injuries. All seven were brought to University Hospital by ambulance. Three minors were injured – one seriously – in the crash, the report shows.

Creasy refused treatment at the scene and had no reported injuries, according to the statement and crash report.

Emergence Health Network clients ‘shine bright’ at prom

Gabrielle Lopez

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Prom season hit Emergence Health Network Friday. Clients with intellectual and developmental disabilities got to “shine bright” at the Marty Robbins Recreation Center.

EHN’s Director of Communications Noreen Jaramillo said the Shine Bright Prom gave clients a day of “fun, excitement and unforgettable memories” for those who never had the opportunity to attend the high school tradition.

Kristen Daugherty CEO of EHN said Friday’s prom gave their clients an experience “some of us take for granted.”

Students from the Milan Institute of Cosmetology did prom attendees’ hair and makeup for free, EHN said. The network also made corsages and boutonnieres.

The Shine Bright Prom started before the 2020 pandemic. Daugherty said the dance went on hiatus out of caution since some of EHN’s clients have compromised immune systems.

Now that EHN’s prom is back, Daugherty hopes it continues to bring clients together to dance.
