Semi and Tanker Crash Causes Blockage on I84

Bailee Shaw

HEYBURN, Idaho (KIFI) — A semi-truck and tanker trailer fire has caused a temporary shutdown and lane restrictions on Interstate 84 early Thursday morning near Heyburn, according to Idaho State Police.

Troopers say the crash happened around 1:50 a.m. on May 1, 2026, near milepost 217 on eastbound I-84.

Investigators say a 2025 International semi-truck driven by a 37-year-old man from El Paso, Texas, was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway, hitting a guardrail and a concrete barrier. The truck then crossed both lanes of the interstate and struck the north side of an overpass wall near N 950 E, where it caught fire.

The semi was pulling an empty 2008 Brenner tanker trailer at the time.

Both the driver and a 37-year-old passenger, who was in the sleeper cab, were able to get out safely. No injuries were reported.

Multiple fire departments from the area responded and were able to put out the flames without further incident.

As a precaution, both directions of I-84 were initially closed while crews assessed the scene. Officials later confirmed the tanker was empty and did not pose any additional hazard.

Westbound lanes have since reopened, along with the right lane of eastbound I-84. The left lane remains closed as crews work to remove the damaged semi and trailer. Drivers are being asked to check 511.idaho.gov for the latest updates.

Idaho State Police were assisted by the Declo Fire Department, East End Fire Department, North Cassia Fire Department, Cassia Medics, Declo QRU, Idaho Transportation Department, Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, Heyburn Police Department, and Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office.

Neighbor recounts trying to save 14-year-old boy killed in Oaklawn shooting

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a shooting that killed a 14-year-old Jesus Merino Terrero in Oaklawn earlier this week.

Deputies say the teen arrested is the victim’s brother. He has been booked into the Sedgwick County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Facility and faces two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of aggravated child endangerment.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday at the Englewood Mobile Home and RV Park in the 3200 block of East MacArthur. Deputies initially responded to an unknown EMS call before dispatchers updated it to a shooting.

When deputies arrived, they found 14-year-old Jesus Merino Terrero with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene.

Neighbors say they were among the first to respond.

Danielle Rud, who lives across the street, said she woke up to pounding on her door in the middle of the night.

“I was in bed with my husband, and at three o’clock in the morning, there was pounding on the door. When we opened the door, there were our three neighbor girls screaming, crying, saying that their brother had been shot. I’m a mom,” Rud said.

Rud’s husband Daniel Reid says he was one of the first to call 911.

“It was pretty devastating, especially since my daughters played in that house,” Reid said.

Rud said she immediately ran across the street.

“I’ve been trained in CPR since I was about 14 years old, so the very first thing my husband asked me to do was just try. As a mom, that’s all I could do, was try,” she said.

She said she quickly realized the boy was already gone but continued trying to help.

“I knew he was gone, but you still have to try, especially for that mama,” Rud said.

Rud said the experience was unlike anything she had ever seen.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my entire life. Nothing like they describe on TV. It’s nothing like that. It’s way more real,” she said.

She said the situation is especially difficult knowing her own daughter had recently been inside the home and was friends with the victim’s sisters.

“The scariest part was my daughter has been in and out of that house. She was friends with the sisters, and now here we are, two days after she was in that house, and a senseless tragedy happened. That is very scary,” Rud said.

Rud also said her heart goes out to the boys’ mother.

“It hurts my heart for the mama, because not only does she now have to grieve one son, but now she has to grieve two,” she said.

She is now urging parents to stay involved in their children’s lives and to stress gun safety.

“Be involved in your children’s lives, because you don’t know what is going on,” Rud said. “If you have a gun at home, teach your children about gun safety.”

The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains ongoing.

Below is what we know about the case.

Truck and body found in wildlife refuge The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed Thursday afternoon that investigators were on the scene near Highway 30, just south of the town of Erick. OSBI confirmed to KOCO that a truck matching the one belonging to Christian was found in that same area on Thursday.

Christian was believed to be driving a 2024 charcoal gray Ram truck when he disappeared.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials on Thursday night confirmed that they had positively identified the body found in a pickup at the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area as Barry Christian.

OSBI officials said they were contacted by the Sayre Police Department about the disappearance of Christian, who was last seen in Sayre on Tuesday, according to a news release.

The Beckham County Sheriff’s Office told KOCO 5 that a deputy was patrolling the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Refuge Thursday morning when they contacted a hunter who had seen a vehicle crashed off a high ridge overlooking Fish Creek.

That vehicle belonged to Christian, and his body was found inside the pickup truck. Christian’s body has since been taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where a cause and manner of death will be determined.

When was Barry Christian first reported missing? He was reported missing after he failed to show up for a scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

The Harmon County Sheriff’s Office and the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office asked the public for help finding Christian late Wednesday night.

Law enforcement released a picture of Christian and his truck. They also released a description of him, saying he is about 6 feet and weighs 230 pounds. He has blue eyes and gray hair.

Statement from Barry Christian’s family His daughter, Brooklyn, sent the news release to KOCO.

Christian was a 54-year-old Republican candidate for Senate District 38 from Sayre.

According to social media, Christian made an appearance at the Mangum Rattlesnake Derby to campaign for the State Senate seat on Saturday, just days before he went missing.

Earlier this month, Christian took to social media several times to discuss his campaign.

“The challenges we face in Oklahoma aren’t Republican or Democrat — they’re challenges of education, workforce, public safety, agriculture, and the ability for families to build a future here at home. These are everyday issues that require real solutions and real commitment. I’m running because I believe in the values that built towns like ours — faith, respect, honesty, and responsibility,” he said in a Facebook post.

Christian has spent his career as a drilling consultant, according to his LinkedIn profile.

9-year-old boy fatally struck by school bus in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (WABC) — Gathered in shock and in prayer, members of the Orthodox Jewish community in South Williamsburg are demanding answers after nine-year-old Yoel Jacobowitz was hit and killed by a bus Friday morning.

“The traffic here is crazy. There needs to be some guidance and some rules,” one resident said.

According to the NYPD, it happened around 8:15 a.m. as a private yeshiva bus was turning from Lee Avenue onto Lorimer Street.

Police say the young boy was crossing the street on his way to school when the bus struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the 49-year-old driver initially drove away, but later returned after someone waved him down and informed him of what had happened.

“I’m sorry for the mother. I’m a mother too. I was very careful. I feel very bad,” Rosa Baez said.

The five-way intersection, which also connects with Wallabout Street, was recently under construction and currently lacks crosswalks and clear street markings.

Residents say the intersection is extremely dangerous, especially in a neighborhood filled with families and children, and particularly on a day when many were preparing for Shabbat.

“It’s a very, very busy intersection. We have a lot going on – a lot of stores and a lot of people crossing over. We need something to be done so this doesn’t keep happening,” another community member said.

City leaders are now urging the Department of Transportation to immediately implement safety improvements and review pedestrian signal timing.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on X, saying, “I am devastated by the loss of a 9-year-old boy struck this morning while crossing the street in Williamsburg. My heart is with his family and loved ones as they endure this tragic loss. Children should be safe walking around our city, and this horrific road death is a painful reminder that we must continue to use every tool available to make our streets safe for all New Yorkers.”

Secret Service places detainer on SC man accused of threatening message toward the President

By Elaina Athans

APEX, N.C. (WTVD) — The day after a man was arrested at a car wash in Apex, ABC11 has learned what the alleged threatening message said and that Secret Service has placed a detainer on him at the Wake County Detention Center.

This all went down on Tuesday afternoon, when Apex police arrested Daniel Swain, 40, after officers said he made threats toward President Donald Trump. Police responded around 2:30 p.m. to the Tidal Wave Auto Spa on Lake Pine Drive after a concerned person reported a suspicious vehicle, according to the Apex Police Department.

Officers found and detained Swain, who they said was making threats directed toward Trump. Investigators also say they observed threatening messages written on the outside of his car.

As a precaution, officers conducted a search of the vehicle for explosive devices, a standard procedure in cases involving threats, police said. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted during the response.

The United States Secret Service was notified and responded to the car wash to assist with the investigation.

Who is Daniel Swain? Law enforcement swarmed the Tidal Wave Auto Spa after someone who was concerned about the message called authorities.

Daniel Swain was detained and taken to the Wake County Detention Center, where he was charged with resisting a public officer, possession of methamphetamine and having a fictitious license plate, according to police.

The message reads “headed to WSH to kill the Pres.”

Addition information from the federal warrant Swain refused to identify himself when Apex PD arrived, they saw a white marker. Swain ID says he lives in Summerville, South Carolina and has a history of traveling between SC and NC in past 30 days. Surveillance video shows the driver’s side and rearview were written before the car wash. The suspect added the messages to the passenger’s side after the car wash. K-9 indicated a “possible item of interest” During a search of the vehicle, they found a drone, two containers of suspected methamphetamine. He says he planned to drive to RTP for job opportunities and take pictures of tech companies with his drone. License plate not associated with this vehicle, VIN had negative results, license plate not registered since 2020. Swain resisted arrest, says he almost fled on foot when officers approached him. Swain told Secret Service and FBI that he went to Washington DC in winter of 2025 and 2026 to “take action.” He later clarified he was only going to legally protest. He visited the White House, Capitol and monuments. He told agents he didn’t do what he planned. Swain was previously interviewed by Secret Service on Jan. 1, 2025 for making a threatening Facebook post. Additionally, on April 19, 2026 he posted another threatening message about Trump. Swain is facing local charges in Wake County and addressed the judge at his arraignment.

“I’m unemployed. I’m a United States Army veteran, third generation, and this is a little ridiculous,” Swain said.

According to a federal arrest warrant obtained by ABC11, Swain allegedly told law enforcement his motivation was the perceived wrongful death of his father, uncle, and grandfather.

Preliminary information indicates that Swain was traveling from South Carolina toward Washington, D.C., authorities said.

Swain does have a criminal history. In 2024, he was arrested and charged with “obstructing governmental operations.”

We learned in the federal arrest warrant that the Secret Service previously interviewed Swain in January of 2025 and then again in April of 2025 – both times for threatening Facebook posts.

Jamin Wattson manages a pizzeria across the street from where Swain was taken into custody.

“It was kind of alarming to say the least,” he said. “It’s very crazy because this is a pretty quiet town.”

ABC11 has reached out to Tidal Wave for comment on the incident, but we have not heard back.

“I’m very proud of the officers and the response,” said Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert. “When it comes to any type of political violence, that’s unacceptable.”

Apex police said their investigation is complete and was forwarded to the Wake County District Attorney’s Office. The U.S. Secret Service is in charge of the federal investigation.

Morning commute: Icy and foggy conditions on Highway 67 into Cripple Creek

Bradley Davis

CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. (KRDO) – While the storm didn’t drop much snow in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Highway 67 out toward Cripple Creek was snowy and slick Friday morning.

Our KRDO13 crews tested the roads themselves through the snow, ice and fog so you can stay safe and informed on your commute.

Reporter Bradley Davis and photographer Cameron Thornton started driving West on Highway 24 just after 4 a.m. They observed relatively clear conditions through Woodland Park, but they started to deteriorate a few miles after turning West onto Highway 67.

Snow started sticking to the road, and there was a thick fog, causing visibility issues. If you plan to drive Highway 67 on Friday morning, temper your speed and expect to add at least 10 minutes to your commute.

The main roads in Cripple Creek are pretty clear with little impact. However, the sidewalks have some ice spots. As of 6 a.m., the temperature was still in the mid-20s, and walking conditions were slick.

KRDO13 Forcaster Julia Donovan expects the temperature to quickly rise above freezing across Teller County, so we’ll likely see the snowy conditions clear out soon.

Atlanta student deported by ICE after traffic stop last month

By Angelina Salcedo

DUNWOODY, Ga. (WXIA) — An 18-year-old Dunwoody High School student has officially been deported by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement after he was denied a last-minute request to halt his removal, his attorney confirmed with 11Alive.

Axel Rios was being held at the Folkston ICE Processing Center after he was pulled over last month for driving without a license. His attorney, Alex Cornejo, said ICE rejected their appeal to exercise discretion in the case, leaving no barriers to immediate deportation to Honduras.

“We have a final order of removal against Axel,” Cornejo said. “One of the options for us was to go to ICE and ask them to exercise discretion.”

Cornejo said the request was denied within 72 hours. He said ICE characterized Rios as a threat to the community, a claim he disputes.

“He’s not. He’s a great boy. He’s harmless,” Cornejo said.

Rios’ family was waiting and hoping for a final legal intervention. Cornejo said on Wednesday that his team was pursuing a motion in Florida, where the original removal order was issued, seeking to have the decision reversed. If granted, the case could’ve possibly returned to Georgia, where Rios could’ve asked an immigration judge for release. Because the final order of removal was issued by a judge in Florida, they had to ask for that decision to be reversed in Florida.

However, those hopes were immediately dashed on Thursday.

“ICE never waited for the judge to decide. It happened today,” Cornejo said. “Never told us anything. It’s a shame.”

Rios, a junior at Dunwoody High School, soccer player, son and brother has lived in the United States since he was 6 years old, according to his attorney. Cornejo said Rios has no criminal history beyond a minor traffic violation.

Cornejo also raised concerns in a Wednesday interview with 11Alive about Rios’ safety if he is deported to Honduras.

“Sending him back to Honduras is, in my opinion, a death sentence because you have to remember he and his family fled Honduras after a family member was convicted for being a member of MS-13 an extremely dangerous gang,” he said.

His attorney previously said that if Rios was deported before a judge intervenes, the chances of returning to the United States become significantly more limited.

“The message of this administration has always been we are going to get rid of the bad apples,” Cornejo said. “Is Axel one of them? The answer is no. So why are you going after our children?”

6 a.m. Friday road report in the afermath of Thursday’s snow in Woodland Park

Scott Harrison

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — People heading to work and school today will mostly find wet pavement, melting snow, and few slick spots to contend with on major streets and roads.

KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior drove on US 24 through Ute Pass to Woodland Park and experienced no problems, with an early morning temperature of 28 degrees in “The City Above The Clouds” at an elevation of nearly 8,500 feet.

Spring snow can often be wet and heavy, but the recent snowfall was more powdery and unlikely to break tree limbs and branches — many of which already have leaves earlier in the season than usual.

Drivers should be aware that side streets and unpaved roads in the area may still have light accumulations of snow or be icy.

Vincenzo’s First Car: How a therapeutic toy car is changing the life of a three-year-old with cerebral palsy

By James Groh

Click here for updates on this story

NEW BERLIN, Wisconsin (WTMJ) — Do you remember what it was like when you got your first car? Well, for 3-year-old Vincenzo Bertoni, it was a big moment. His first car was a Jeep. He got it well before he even passed his drivers license exam. But don’t worry, his dad, Angelo, was on board with this.

“I’ve never seen him light up like that before. He was in love with it instantly,” Angelo Bertoni said.

This isn’t a regular toy car, though. It’s a therapy device. Children’s Wisconsin gave the car to the Bertoni family as part of the Go Baby Go program. Kids ages 9 months to 5 years old get modified cars, for free, to help improve motor functions and be more mobile. The most common alteration is that the pedals are removed and replaced with a big button in the center of the steering wheel.

“For example, they might have right-sided weakness, and we can manipulate that button to putting it over to the right side in order to improve that function of that arm or that hand. We can manipulate it to have an LED light that can draw their attention to the button to help them understand that cause and effect,” Lauren Tyson, a physical therapist with Children’s Wisconsin, said.

Vincenzo was born with cerebral palsy, autism, a muscle contraction impairment, and he’s deaf. Independent movement has always been difficult.

“Something’s that going to give him better mobility, since he’s only able to walk right now with assistance holding. He can’t really get around besides scooting. He’s still not able to crawl,” Angelo Bertoni said.

This jeep is a game-changer for the Bertoni family.

“I think this is going to enable US to even do like our family walks and stuff like that, where he’s not just sitting in a stroller. Now he’s going to be able to participate,” Bertoni said.

The Children’s Wisconsin Milwaukee chapter of the Go Baby Go program has given out 450 free cars to families and kids. It wouldn’t be possible without the help of Marquette University. About a dozen students and staff members help modify the car to fit each child’s individual needs.

“Head supports, lateral supports, so things on the sides of the kid’s body to provide trunk support. We do things in the footwell. We do pads under their bottom. We can do buttons that light up,” Molly Erickson, the program’s lead engineer at Marquette University, said.

The cars also help with improved communication abilities.

“We’ve seen a lot of good improvements in children vocalizing more, children expressing themselves more independently. So even in kiddos who are maybe are walking independently, their speech pathologist might refer them to see if we can improve any type of postural control for improving breath support. And then being able to vocalize more independently or even for feeding needs,” Tyson, with Children’s Wisconsin, said.

Vincenzo is driving before many of us get behind the wheel. Surpassing expectations is a common theme in his life. Doctors said he may never walk or be able to hold up his head. But he’s doing both.

“He has got a fire in his spirit that I think is going to make him be able to do good things in his life,” Bertoni said.

Now, this new Jeep will help make playtime easier for Vincenzo and his cousins.

Union members, other workers unite for May Day rallies in Mid-Missouri

Euphenie Andre

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Friday is International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, honoring workers across the U.S. and around the world.

LiUNA Local 955 brought its message directly to the University of Missouri campus, holding two rallies just hours apart to call for higher wages and better working conditions.

The union represents service and maintenance workers at the University of Missouri, MU Health Care and UMKC and other public workers in the area. MU Faculty Librarians and information specialists are trying to join LiUNA Local 955 ahead of a union election scheduled from Monday through Wednesday.

At the center of the push is a call for longevity-based raises and a minimum wage of $19 per hour. Union leaders claim employees are not being properly rewarded for years of service.

“I can tell you there is a significant portion of workers make less than $19 an hour,” LiUNA representative Andrew Hutchinson said. “That include folks at the libraries, a lot of the information specialist… Some of them have been here 10, 20, 30 years,”

Hutchinson points to other union contracts in Kirksville, Centralia, and Columbia that include step pay scales, systems that guarantee annual raises until workers reach the top of the pay scale.

“At the university, what they do is they keep everyone so close to the same wage, and that compresses wages. And that’s how you get custodians who have been here 30 years who are barely making above, what someone walking in through the door makes, ” Hutchinson said.

Workers are also calling for reduced parking costs and improvements to other essential needs.

Students also stood in solidarity, with some voicing frustration with university leadership, following the university’s decision to defund several minority programs.

“Both workers and students are facing an administration that doesn’t seem to be hearing them,” Columbia Ward 2 Councilwoman Vera Elewood said. “It’s focusing more on the budget than the people who are actually building the university.”

The union is currently in wage negotiations with MU. However, workers said broader policy changes could impact their financial future. A proposed bill backed by Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe that could eliminate certain sales taxes has raised concerns about potential budget cuts.

“We know that when the university looks at budget cuts, they come for our folks. They come for the service and maintenance workers who are counting every cent. So if they’re experiencing cuts with their employer and they’re having to pay sales tax on their car, haircuts, and an increased sales tax on grociers. It’s just not going to be enough to make ends meet.”

The group “We Stand United Missouri” held a rally in Jefferson City at the Memorial Park.
