BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The annual Bunny Bonanzoo, an Easter celebration held at the Maryland Zoo, attracted kids and families on Friday

Kids have the chance to not only participate in the egg hunt, but also see a bubble show, win candy, and meet this weekend’s most famous animal, the Easter bunny.

“I think it’s kind of our big spring opener, you know, the weather is going to start to look a little prettier and nicer and warmer. And it’s just a fun time to bring the family, lots of crafts and big things for the kids to do today,” said Colleen Burch with the Maryland Zoo.

And of course, the animals will get an Easter treat too.

“We have a lovely volunteer that makes these big papier-mache eggs, and the animal keepers will stuff them with some fun treats. They put them in with our animals, and you get to watch the animals tear them up and have a good time,” said Burch.

Many parents said Bunny Bonanzoo has become a tradition to visit the zoo each year, kicking off spring and Easter weekend.

“We’ve actually done this day since she was born, so she just turned 12 today, so it’s her birthday. So we came out for her birthday to do it for the 12th year, I think now, and it’s become a tradition,” said one mother.

“Just being together, I think, is really important. Just being able to celebrate what this is all about,” said another.

The annual event is about spending time with family, having fun, and supporting a great cause.

“It is rewarding, and we love to have them come and educate them on why it’s so important to have animals and conservation and all of those things,” said Burch.

The Bunny Bonanzoo will continue through Easter weekend.

Students Call ‘Soltopia’ a Success in Isla Vista

Tracy Lehr

ISLA VISTA, Calif. (KEYT)– It’s a tradition at University of California, Santa Barbara for students to celebrate the first Saturday following their first week back from Spring Break.

What started as the unsanctioned ‘Floatopia’ decades ago turned into unsanctioned ‘Deltopia.’

But a crackdown on loud music, public intoxication and parking has led to other celebrations.

That latest is called ‘Soltopia.’

Students and the Isla Vista Community Services District worked on making Soltipia a fun alternative along The Loop.

Students graduating this year said they enjoyed the free music festival.

“At first a lot of people felt disappointed, but I feel like they really did a good job creating something that people are really excited about,” said Eliza Bulanti.

“I do want to give props to the school, though, for actually creating an alternative event, because the first it was like, ‘oh, if we just cancel it, okay, we’re not going to do anything’ and that was kind of a bummer because we’re seniors,” said Anna Chmeh.

Thousands of students and residents registered for Soltopia wristbands that came with perks.

The weather turned out to be picture-perfect for people to enjoy the sunny Saturday.

Some students plan to continue their version of Deltopia on Sunday along Del Playa where beach access is closed this weekend.

There are unconfirmed reports that a deputy was injured in the area.

Car hauler catches fire, closes westbound I-70 ramp in Boone County Saturday night

Haley Swaino

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A large vehicle fire blocked traffic from using an I-70 on-ramp in Boone County on Saturday night.

Boone County Fire crews were called to the Rocheport westbound on-ramp at mile marker 115 around 11 p.m. and found a car hauler carrying about seven cars had caught fire, according to Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Chuck Doss. He said the trailer was “well involved” in flames when firefighters arrived.

After the fire was under control, crews were able to gain access to the vehicles and move a Chevrolet Equinox that appeared to have no damage off the carrier.

“So really, we’ve got seven car fires going,” Doss said. “The six on the trailer, plus the semi.”

Doss added that the multi-level carrier made fighting the fire difficult, with cars on both levels catching fire.

“Having those vehicles elevated, we had to get ladders to get to the top of those, and with those car fires, the vehicles burning on that top level, getting access to it was a challenge,” Doss said.

In a Boone County Joint Communications alert sent around 11:15 p.m., drivers were asked to avoid the area. Doss said no drivers were able to get on I-70 from Route BB as crews worked the scene.

An ABC 17 News reporter on scene saw heavy fire and smoke coming from the hauler around 11:30 p.m. Tires could be heard popping. No injuries were reported, according to Doss.

At least five Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicles were seen, alongside Boone County Fire trucks and an MU Health Care ambulance. A MoDOT vehicle was also at the scene.

Three BCFPD tankers drove back and forth, carrying water from a hydrant down the road to the scene, Doss said.

ABC 17 News is at the scene working to learn more.

Car enthusiasts gather at Idaho State University for Tau Kappa Epsilon car show

Joey Chaveli

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI)– Car enthusiasts gathered at Idaho State University as dozens of vehicles lined the parking lot outside Frazier Hall for a campus car show.

The event was organized by members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon and brought students and community members together to celebrate car culture while supporting a good cause.

Classic cars, modified imports, and modern performance vehicles filled the lot as attendees walked through rows of cars, stopping to look at custom engines, interiors, and unique designs.

Participants say the event also helped to raise awareness and support for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“Because it supports St. Jude, we’re out here to support them,” said attendee Jan Caster. “I think it’s a great organization, and I think everybody should have stepped out today and supported it.”

Organizers say the car show was designed to bring people together and give car enthusiasts a place to showcase their vehicles while contributing to a charitable cause.

Participants say events like this also give them an opportunity to connect with others who share the same passion for cars.

Organizers say they hope to continue hosting events like this car show in the future.

Pueblo Police say son kills father, and a woman, before turning gun on himself

Michael Logerwell

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) – 3 people are dead in Pueblo as police begin an investigation that stretches miles.

The police department says it started when its officers went out to investigate a shot spotter alert at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday morning in the 1200 block of East 4th Street.

At the scene, officers found two people dead, one on the street and another in a vehicle. Pueblo County Coroner Gregory Graheck is identifying those two found dead as Glenn Allen Beeman Jr., a 40-year-old man, and Amanda Leigh Manion, a 41-year-old woman.

While still at that scene, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office was notified of another gunshot out in Pueblo West. Deputies found a man who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The coroner is identifying the man found in Pueblo West as 19-year-old Glenn Allen Beeman III.

At this early point in the investigation, the Pueblo Police Department says Beeman III is the suspect in the double homicide.

The case remains under active investigation.

The Manion family released the following statement on April 5:

It is with profound sorrow that the family confirms the tragic loss of Amanda Manion, her estranged ex-husband Glenn Beeman Jr., and their son, Glenn Beeman III. The events unfolded in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 4th, resulting in the deaths of all three individuals.

In the wake of widespread speculation, the family wishes to publicly clarify the circumstances surrounding this immense loss. This tragedy was the direct and cumulative result of a catastrophic failure within the mental health system. Glenn Beeman III suffered a severe and complete mental collapse, which initiated a tragic sequence of events beginning with the taking of his mother’s life.

The family wishes to acknowledge the heroic intervention of family members present on the scene. Their courageous actions successfully dissuaded Glenn III from causing further harm to others, ending with him taking his own life.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Eric Manion released the following statement:

“Unfortunately, we are here to mourn a deep and sorrowful loss. There are many questions, regrets, and conflicting feelings over the events that transpired. Although our initial thoughts naturally turn to anger and outrage, we are not here to cast judgment upon the deceased. We are here to find answers and hope—hope for a future where we can learn to function without the people we have lost. We must all come together in this time of great despair, comfort each other, and continue to live and move forward.”

The family respectfully, but firmly, requests that the media and the public respect their privacy during this period of profound shock and grief. The family will not be participating in interviews, and no further information will be released at this time.
