Arlington man finds rapid relief from Parkinson’s with new incision‑free treatment

ARLINGTON, Texas (KTVT) — For one Arlington man, a new incision‑free treatment brought relief in a matter of seconds.

Retired salesman and Air Force veteran Bud Levell, 72, has spent most of his life repairing old radios, machines and anything with wires. The work has always required steady hands – something Parkinson’s slowly took from him.

“I lost my sense of smell 11 or 12 years ago. That’s usually the first symptom,” Levell said. “And under certain stressful conditions, I had a little tremor in the right hand.”

New treatment offers new hope As his symptoms worsened, Levell came across an article about a new ultrasound‑based treatment.

“Someone sent me a text with a link to a magazine article that was talking about this ultrasound process,” he said. “I read it and said, ‘This sounds good.'”

That link eventually led him to UT Southwestern Medical Center, where doctors determined he was a strong candidate for Magnetic Resonance‑guided focused ultrasound. The FDA recently approved an expanded version of the treatment that targets more Parkinson’s symptoms, including tremors and slowed movement.

“We’re using a higher energy to destroy small tracts in the brain, or small bundles of nerves,” said Dr. Bhavya R. Shah, who leads the focused ultrasound program at UT Southwestern.

Shah says the procedure targets a precise area deep in the brain – about the size of a grain of rice – without the need for an incision.

“We’re navigating to a future where therapies of the brain may be incisionless,” he said. “That in itself is exciting.”

For Levell, the results were immediate. After the procedure, doctors asked how his tremor felt.

“My answer was simple,” he said. “What tremor?”

The moment was emotional. “It felt good. It felt really nice to be able to say that,” Levell said. “To be able to hold this hand and do this…”

Now, for the first time in nine years, Levell is back at his workbench repairing radios — something he once feared he’d lost forever.

As his hands grow steady again, Levell hopes others living with Parkinson’s find strength in their own journey.

“Does God have a plan for me with Parkinson’s? Yeah,” he said. “What is it? I don’t know, but I’m going to depend on God. I’m going to live as well as I can.”

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (WJZ) — An Annapolis man was arrested on several counts of manufacturing and possession of destructive devices during an investigation into illegal deer hunting, according to police.

Lee Scott Wygal Ralston, 37, is facing 32 felony counts of manufacturing a destructive device and 32 counts of possession of a destructive device.

Police said Ralston was initially being investigated for allegedly hunting deer at night and from the roadway, which are both illegal.

On April 14, officers searched a home in the 1200 block of Black Walnut Lane in Annapolis, where investigations said a “significant number” of suspected explosive devices were recovered.

Investigators also found materials used to make explosive devices. Police said the devices varied in size and composition. BBs were found in some of the devices; some were designed to be remotely detonated, and others had homemade flash powder, according to charging documents.

Several weapons, suppressors, and ammunition were also seized from the home, according to police.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department, the county’s Office of the Fire Marshal, the Fire/Arson and Explosives Investigative Bureau, and the Maryland Natural Resources Police contributed to the arrest.

Loomis man with autism defies odds, turns passion into purpose

By Conor McGill

LOOMIS, California (KOVR) — April is Autism Awareness Month, and one young man in Loomis is proving that you can do anything you set your mind to.

At 23 years old, Cameron Weitzel has turned his passion into a business and is using his voice to inspire others.

He’s the owner of Cameron’s Collectibles, an online shop filled with retro finds and nostalgic treasures.

“My business is about getting collectible stuff and retro stuff and Hot Wheel cars,” Cameron Weitzel said.

From Hot Wheels to toy dolls, each item is handpicked and carefully listed online by Cameron himself.

“I take pictures of them and put how much money it is,” he said.

But his journey hasn’t been easy. His family says doctors once doubted he would be able to communicate.

“Our neurologist told us that he was going to be nonverbal and we were going to accept that. However, we were going to try our best to try and get those words out,” said his mother, Trina Weitzel.

Despite the challenges, his family never gave up, leaning on faith and determination day by day.

“Sometimes it takes hour by hour for us to get through the day and it helps that we have faith. We don’t have a lot of family support, but that was another reason we started the blog, was to reach out to other people and let them know they’re not alone,” she said.

They later created a blog called “Rockin Autism Journey,” aimed at sharing their story and building a supportive community.

And their experience reflects a broader trend. According to the CDC, autism rates have risen from 1 in 36 children to 1 in 31, highlighting the importance of awareness, acceptance, and inclusion.

For Cameron, his business is more than collectibles. It’s independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose.

“It’s hard sometimes, but it gets easier,” Cameron said.

Child survives 60-foot fall from Worcester apartment building window: “That kid had guardian angels”

Worcester, Massachusetts (WBZ) — A four-year-old boy is expected to recover after falling from a seventh-floor window at an apartment complex in Worcester, Massachusetts according to police and a family member.

Emergency crews rushed to the Lincoln Village Apartments Wednesday night after a frantic 911 call reported a child had fallen out a window.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene. One man, identified as Antonio, said he heard the screaming and ran to help. He said he saw the boy fall several stories before landing on the ground.

“The way he hit the ground, you don’t survive that. That kid had guardian angels. Whether people are spiritual or not, that kid had something on his shoulder that said ‘you’re not today,'” he said.

Boy landed on patch of mulch Worcester police said officers arrived within a minute and found the boy conscious, alert and breathing. He was taken to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators said the child fell more than 60 feet and narrowly missed large utility boxes below. Officials believe the impact was partially cushioned by a patch of mulch on the ground.

“It was an amazing unique circumstance that definitely could have gone a different way,” said Sgt. Elise Miranda with the Worcester Police Department.

Detectives are still working to determine exactly how the fall happened, but they believe the child may have fallen through the screen of a common-area window that had been opened to cool the apartment.

As temperatures rise, police are urging families to take precautions.

“As we start getting into the warmer weather, everyone is going to start opening up those windows, we’re talking about air conditioning and things like that,” Miranda said. “Couple things you’re going to want to start looking at are the locks on the screens, making sure the screens are intact.”

Miranda suggested parents with young kids in the home should also buy additional security tools around windows.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police said the family has been fully cooperating, but understandably distraught.

The child was still in the hospital Thursday in stable condition, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Dog helps Orange County family save their home during early morning fire

ORANGE COUNTY, California (KCBS) — Fillmore, a 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, is being praised as a hero after he alerted his family to a fire raging in their Orange County garage.

The massive flames and smoke filled the Dalis family’s garage early Wednesday morning while everyone was asleep, except for Fillmore.

“Continuous barking,” homeowner Tom Dalis recalled. “I said maybe there’s something out there. We get coyotes.”

After waking up, Dalis’ wife said she saw a red light and ran out thinking something was wrong at their neighbors’ home. But the fire was much closer, consuming their garage and minutes away from reaching the main house, where Dalis, his wife and mother-in-law live.

“He was going crazy,” Dalis said. “It was popping. It was very loud. I don’t know if the windows of the car were popping.”

Everyone agreed that Fillmore’s persistent barking served as a smoke alarm, alerting the family to the danger in their garage. Dalis said he immediately ran and grabbed his hose, spraying down the flames as firefighters arrived.

“Without him, we probably could have lost the house if we were not woken up,” Dalis said. “He saved our house and potentially our lives.”

Smoke alarms in garages aren’t legally required, but experts said it’s not a bad idea to have one. Crews believe the fire was electrical.

“He was scared because of the noise and stuff but happy after that,” Dalis said.

Some UVU students grateful they’re left without a graduation commencement speaker

OREM, Utah (KSTU) — Graduation will look a little different for students at Utah Valley University at the end of the month, after the school chose to forgo having a featured commencement speaker.

Author and educator Sharon McMahon, who’s commonly referred to as America’s Government Teacher, was the original choice, but was dropped without a replacement after comments she made about Charlie Kirk, who was gunned down during an on-campus rally last year.

The controversy shows that the events of September 10 still shake UVU as the academic year now nears its end.

“…I had to get more involved, which is why I joined College Republicans,” said Sage Lloyd, president of the organization.

The shooting is part of what pushed Lloyd to become more civically engaged.

“I realized that I needed to have a voice to impact change on campus,” she said.

Lloyd is one of many conservatives who have been vocal in denouncing McMahon’s selection as commencement speaker. A spokesperson for McMahon told the Salt Lake Tribune she had unequivocally condemned Kirk’s assassination.

“I’m also really upset that it happened where it did. It’s this university that I’ve spoken at multiple times, and the community there is really so lovely,” McMahon had said previously.

But other comments she made about Kirk were what upset Lloyd.

“…and the murder that was horrific and should never have happened… does not magically erase what was said or done,” Lloyd read from her phone, quoting McMahon. “She should have just left it at should never have happened.”

And after weeks of criticism from campus to Utah’s Capitol Hill, the university decided to cancel McMahon’s appearance. In a statement, the university pointed to increased safety concerns as being part of its decision.

It now leaves more than 13,000 graduates, the largest graduating class in school history, without a featured commencement speaker.

With graduation just two weeks away, Lloyd feels for her senior class.

“I think it’s a little disappointing they’re not going to have anyone speak just because we didn’t like their choice in speaker,” she said.

Those in opposition to McMahon are ultimately grateful that the university heard their voices and made the decision.

NJ Transit to address commuter alternatives amid World Cup concerns during press conference

By Jaysha Patel

NEW JERSEY (WABC) — Who’s footing the bill to get to the FIFA World Cup?

That’s the question on everyone’s mind as New Jersey gears up to host eight games at MetLife Stadium.

Governor Mikie Sherrill says the skyrocketing transportation costs have a $50 million pricetag — one that she’s not willing to pass on to commuters.

Ticket prices have been a hot topic, but we may have to wait a bit longer for an answer. Transportation officials on Friday will be talking about how NJ Transit service is going to be impacted.

Four hours before those matches, NJ Transit service from New York Penn Station to New Jersey is expected to be suspended, going to MetLife Stadium only.

Friday’s press conference is happening to discuss what alternatives there are for commuters during those four hours when service could be restricted.

Four World Cup matches are during the week, so this service disruption will impact the afternoon commute for many people.

There have been rumors recently that a round trip New Jersey Transit ticket to attend the FIFA World Cup could cost up to $150. The normal price is $12.90.

A set price has not been announced yet, so that’s a big question still, and it may be brought up at Friday’s press conference or we may have to wait a bit longer for an answer.

NJ Transit says it’s going to cost around $48 million to provide service during the World Cup, primarily because of extra security.

Gov. Sherrill says she doesn’t want to pass that cost onto every everyday commuters.

She released a video on social media saying FIFA should pay for the rides, but FIFA says that’s not part of the original deal.

“I won’t stick New Jersey’s commuters with that tab for years to come. That’s not fair. So here’s the bottom line, FIFA should pay for the rides, but if they don’t, I’m not going to let New Jersey commuters get taken for one,” Sherrill said.

Sherrill says her predecessor set up the deal.

The press conference is set to be held at 11:30 a.m.

There is parking available at the American Dream Mall. Those prices are set by FIFA and could run over $200 per space.

Those who park at the mall will have access to mall festivities and celebrations.
