MILWAUKEE (WISN) — In a Milwaukee auto repair shop lot full of vehicles and full of cameras, a man in an unmarked tow truck stole a car off the business’s property Sunday. It left Diamond Buchanan, a single mom and manager at McDonald’s in Brown Deer, without a means of transportation.

Monday, Buchanan received a call from the owner at Uptop Motoring, informing her that her car was missing. She owns her car and does not have any outstanding tickets or payments. The red Nissan Murano was parked legally, on Uptop’s private property.

“What do you mean, my car is gone? My car is paid for. It was never on a note,” Buchanan said.

WISN 12 News broadcast surveillance footage showing a man in a tow truck without plates or logos taking the car.

Wednesday, Buchanan received a tip from someone who recognized the tow truck driver from the news footage.

“I guess he recognized him from the video that was on the news,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan tracked her car down to a lot owned by a church near 13th Street and Green Bay Avenue, and the questions started swirling.

She found her car stripped for parts in the lot nearly seven miles away from Uptop Motoring.

“When my car got towed, it was perfectly fine. Like, no scratches. No dents,” Buchanan said.

Her car was also parked next to another car of the same make, model, and color.

“At first, I thought they were trying to take parts off of my car and put it on the other car, but the other car was completely totaled. I don’t know what they thought they were doing,” Buchanan said.

The lot was mostly empty Wednesday, except for piles of garbage and a few other vehicles in disrepair. City property records and signage indicate that the land is owned by Mount Zion Assembly Church.

Buchanan and Milwaukee police contacted the church pastor.

“He said he had no clue of what was going on,” Buchanan said.

WISN 12 News’ attempts to reach the church for comment on Wednesday were unsuccessful. Milwaukee police have not taken the tow truck driver into custody, but are still investigating. Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7242 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 414-224-Tips or P3 Tips App.

Buchanan said repairs to her car will likely cost thousands of dollars. Find her GoFundMe here.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KMBC) — A man has been charged after being accused of placing explosive devices in a trash can near the Liberty Memorial in late February.

Owen I. Canizales Argueta is charged with 20 counts of possession of an illegal explosive.

Court documents state that police were dispatched on Feb. 24 to the Liberty Memorial after custodial staff discovered a bag they believed had explosives inside.

After investigating, it turned out there were 20 homemade explosive devices.

Surveillance video shows a vehicle entering the driveway near the Liberty Memorial a day before, and a man placed the red bag in the trash can.

Canizales Argueta admitted to the police that he was responsible for those actions.

“Jackson County does not tolerate threats. Not to our landmarks, not to our gathering places, and not to our neighborhoods. I am proud of KCPD’s swift investigative work to identify and arrest the defendant, allowing our office to quickly file charges,” Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said in a statement. “With the World Cup just 100 days away, we’re prepared and committed to holding anyone who seeks to harm this community accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We’re working closely with local law enforcement, elected officials, federal partners, and KC2026, to ensure that when the world arrives to our community, we are prepared and safe.”

A judge set a $100,000 cash only bond for him.

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WLWT) — Multiple people were rescued by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office after heavy rainfall led to rising water levels parts of Greater Cincinnati.

Deputies say the department’s Emergency Response Services Team worked with the Morgan Township Fire Department overnight to assist residents and respond to flooding incidents, including multiple disabled vehicles that were stranded in high water across the community.

Officials say Dry Fork Creek caused issues in Morgan Township, with most homes being affected along Okeana, Drewsburg and Church Street. Stranded vehicles were primarily along Race Street and Alert New London.

The sheriff’s office reminds motorists to use caution when driving near high/standing water:

– Never drive through flooded roadways

– Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Find an alternate route if you encounter water over the roadway

– Stay away from flooded creeks, streams and rivers. Swift moving water is extremely dangerous and often can be deeper than it appears

– Avoid walking through flood waters, as hidden debris, strong currents or contaminated water pose a serious threat

– BCSO posted photos of some of their rescue calls to their Facebook page Thurday.

Ex-Georgia sheriff, who had rival killed, dies in prison

By Graham Cawthon

DECATUR, Georgia (WJCL) — Sidney Dorsey, the former Georgia sheriff who was serving a life sentence for ordering the assassination of his elected successor, has died in prison. He was 86.

A Georgia Department of Corrections official confirmed Dorsey died Monday night of natural causes at Augusta State Medical Prison.

Dorsey’s conviction stemmed from the Dec. 15, 2000, killing of DeKalb County Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown, who was shot outside his Decatur home just days before he was to take office. Prosecutors said Dorsey arranged the slaying after losing a bitter reelection campaign and amid allegations of corruption in the sheriff’s office.

A jury convicted Dorsey in 2002 of arranging Brown’s murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, plus 23 years on corruption-related convictions, including racketeering and violating his oath of office.

At sentencing, Dorsey denied responsibility, telling the court, “I do not have the blood of Derwin Brown on my hands.”

Brown’s family testified during the hearing, including his widow, Phyllis Brown, who told Dorsey she did not wish him death despite the loss inflicted on her family.

In 2007, Dorsey admitted from prison that he orchestrated the killing, authorities said. He told a prosecutor he had ordered the hit but later claimed he tried to call it off.

Two other men were also convicted in connection with the killing.

Brown, a longtime police veteran, had campaigned on a pledge to root out corruption in the sheriff’s department. His death drew national attention and was widely described by authorities as a political assassination.

Brown left behind his wife and five children. In recent years, family members and supporters have continued to hold annual vigils in his memory.

Vermont maple syrup production to exceed millions of gallons this year

By James Maloney

CANAAN, Vermont (WPTZ) — Sugaring is well underway with trees tapped and sap boiling. The Vermont Agency of Agriculture said this year’s production will be over 3 million gallons statewide.

“It’s an anxious time for sugar makers,” Secretary Anson Tebbetts said. “Looks like the weather is about to kick in. So I think, over the next few days and over the next couple of weeks, a lot of Vermont maple will be made in the Green Mountains.”

Tebbetts, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, and other state officials made the trip to Essex County, Vermont Wednesday, making the area the “Capital for a Day.”

Scott tapped one of the trees at April’s Maple in Canaan and was seen riding a snowmobile.

“I couldn’t think of a better day to do it than at the end of our season when we’re transitioning from winter to spring,” he said.

April’s Maple is a sugar house and café, many of those who visit get there by sledding, according to owner April Lemay. She started the businesses in the early 2000s.

“It was really important to us that we create something that is welcoming to family and honors tradition,” She said. “So everybody that walks in our door, we try and treat them as family and share with them the tradition of maple syrup and the wonderful flavor.”

Lemay hopes to produce 4,000 gallons of syrup, weather permitting. Tebbetts said impacts of last year’s extreme drought on sugaring won’t be able to be observed until April.

SHIRLEY, Massachusetts (WCVB) — Police are investigating after human remains were found near a bridge in Shirley, Massachusetts, officials confirmed Wednesday.

A group of young people were walking near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when they saw something that looked like a body part in the water, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The group reported the body part to the police, who later confirmed that it was in fact human remains. Neighbors said the group was middle school-aged students.

“There is always activity around here, people walking their dogs. We walk our dog. It’s a pretty safe area,” said neighbor Michelle Maramarco.

Foul play is suspected in the incident, the district attorney’s office said.

There may be traffic delays or detours near the bridge, Shirley Police Chief Sam Santiago said.

“I hope we get some answers soon and that everybody is safe around here,” Maramarco said.

Shirley police, along with Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, are investigating.

28-year-old woman arrested in connection with 2 girls found dead in suitcases

By Courtney Shaw

CLEVELAND (WEWS) — Cleveland Police announced that a 28-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with two young girls found dead in suitcases earlier this week.

According to police, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the area of East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue after canvassing the area, speaking to witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage.

A child was found inside the home and taken into the custody of the Department of Child and Family Services, police said.

Authorities have not released the woman’s identity or her relationship to the girls.

“These were two young lives with their entire futures ahead of them,” said Chief Dorothy Todd. “Our detectives worked tirelessly and with great care to identify those responsible. Investigations of this nature require patience, precision, and discretion. Unlike what is often portrayed on television, every detail cannot be shared publicly. Certain information must remain confidential to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure justice for these victims. That careful and methodical work allowed our detectives to develop the evidence needed to make quick identification of a person of interest, ultimately resulting in an arrest.”

Mayor Justin Bibb has released the following statement about the arrest:

“I want to thank our homicide detectives and members of the Division of Police for their incredible work in this case. Their dedication and persistence led to a quick arrest in connection with the tragic deaths of two young children whose bodies were discovered earlier this week.

This has shocked our community. We love and protect our young people, and the loss of these two children is unimaginable. Our hearts are with everyone who is grieving this tragedy.”

What happened?

On Monday night, a man walking his dog near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue found a suitcase with human remains inside at Saranac Playground near Ginn Academy.

Cleveland Police responded to the scene and determined a young girl was inside the suitcase, which was buried in a shallow grave. While collecting evidence, a second shallow grave was found with the other girl inside a suitcase. Police said the girls’ estimated ages are 8 and a half and 14 years old.

On Tuesday, Cleveland Police held a news conference to discuss the case.

There were no missing children in the area who matched their descriptions, Todd said during the news conference.

Police are gathering information and surveillance footage from the area and have established a 24-hour response line for any tips. Anyone with information should call the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.

The investigation is ongoing, and police said there was no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (WYFF) — The former head coach at the University of South Carolina, Lou Holtz, has died at 89. His death was announced by Notre Dame on Wednesday.

Holtz led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to their last national championship in 1988.

“Over a remarkable five‑decade career, he led college programs at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina,” his family said in a statement. “He transformed every team he inherited.”

In 33 seasons on the college sidelines, Holtz went 249-132-7, spending most of his career in the South Bend. During his tenure at Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, the Fighting Irish were 100-30-2.

Following his time at Notre Dame, Holtz was head coach at USC, where the Gamecocks went 33-37. In his first season in 1999, the Gamecocks went winless 0-11. Following his debut season, Holtz turned the program around to secure back-to-back wins in the Outback Bowl during the 2000 (8-4) and 2001 (9-3) seasons.

Holtz retired from coaching after the 2004 season in Columbia and later became a TV analyst for ESPN from 2005 to 2015.

Holtz won two Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, an honor for NCAA college football’s national coach of the year. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump in 2020.

Holtz entered hospice care in January after his birthday.

“Coach Lou Holtz helped restore pride in Gamecock football and inspired a generation of players across our state,” South Carolina Attorney General said in a statement. “His leadership on and off the field left a lasting mark on South Carolina.”

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) also made a statement regarding the passing of Coach Holtz:

“A giant tree has fallen with the passing of my good friend, Lou Holtz.

“There will be plenty of time to talk about his amazing wife, family, and accomplishments. As to this moment, I deeply believe that Lou Holtz is now in the hands of a loving God, and his pain is over.

“To his family, fans and friends – who number in the thousands – as we mourn, let us dedicate ourselves to celebrating a life well-lived.

“May God provide comfort to his family and friends.”

Animal cruelty charges filed after parakeet fed marijuana, beer

By WTAE staff

GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania (WTAE) — A Greensburg man is facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly giving marijuana and beer to his pet parakeet daily.

“It’s definitely an odd one,” City of Greensburg Police Detective Sergeant Justin Scalzo said. “This is the first incident involving something of this nature.”

Officers were dispatched to Callaghan’s Bar on South Main Street the night of Feb. 21.

“The caller is the bartender,” the dispatcher told officers. “She says that there is a white male at the bar with a parakeet. The bird has a broken foot, and he’s telling everybody at the bar that he feeds it marijuana and makes it drink beer. Currently, the bird is in his pocket. She’s concerned for its welfare.”

“The patron was bragging to other people inside the bar that he feeds the parakeet marijuana and has it drink beer on a daily basis,” Scalzo added.

When police arrived, the bird was injured and seemed in distress.

“Its leg appeared to be broken,” Scalzo said. “Its foot was actually facing the wrong direction.”

Officers arrested the 40-year-old that night for public intoxication, according to Timothy Grace’s affidavit of probable cause.

Then, officers worked to help the parakeet. They called on Lt. Rob Jones. He volunteers at local animal shelters when not on patrol.

“He himself took the bird to a veterinarian hospital in Monroeville, where it went through treatment,” Scalzo said. “If we have a case where an animal is in distress, and we need help homing an animal, he’s our guy to go to. He, in less than 24 hours, was able to get this bird the care that it needed.”

The bird was weak, underweight, and dehydrated. It was given a splint for a broken leg and was taking three different antibiotics. The AVET Center in Monroeville provided a statement about the bird, which was named Blue Skies.

“We’re glad the parakeet, Blue Skies, was brought to us quickly so our team could evaluate him and begin treatment right away.

“At Avets, our Avian & Exotics service is overseen by board-certified specialist Dr. Jennilee Morrison, who specializes in the treatment of birds, so any injured or ill bird is in excellent hands when brought to our hospital.

“Blue Skies arrived through our Avian and Exotic Emergency Hours and was treated by on-call veterinarian Dr. Diana Mancuso. After diagnostic imaging, Dr. Mancuso confirmed a broken leg and admitted Blue Skies to the hospital for treatment and supportive care.

“During his stay, Blue Skies enjoyed observing our team as they cared for a variety of non-traditional pets within the hospital. He is currently recovering with Pearl Parrot Rescue, where their experts will ensure he is placed in a loving home when he is ready.”

Pearl Parrot Rescue confirmed to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that Blue Skies is recovering, but could still lose its leg.

Grace now faces charges including aggravated cruelty to animals and transporting animals in a cruel manner.

“People are caring for it,” Scalzo said. “I think the staff at the bar and the patrons that alerted police to this did the right thing. Hopefully, it’s rehomed and goes to people who will actually take care of it.”
