EPISD students highlight Montessori Education

Rosemary Garcia

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)—The last week of February marks Montessori Education Week.

The El Paso Independent School District provides Montessori education at various campuses. EPISD Montessori schools are part of existing elementary campuses.

Montessori education is described as a hands-on educational approach that continues to gain interest.

It was developed in 1907 by Maria Montessori. It’s characterized by its independent approach.

Students navigate their education, ultimately deciding what challenge they want to take on each school day while still learning basic concepts.

Selyna Wallace is a guide, also referred to as a teacher, at Dr. Green Montessori. She explained that Montessori focuses on the mind, body and spirit.

“Very few lessons are taught in a group, like in a normal or traditional setting. Maybe for the day you’re learning the letter A, and everyone is learning it. In a Montessori material, every child is at a different pace because every child is different,” she said.

Montessori also emphasizes social, emotional and practical life skills in addition to academics.

Wallace said, unlike traditional learning methods, Montessori students are able to learn manners, conflict resolution, how to communicate properly, and improve body movement, like learning how to pour, sweep and clean.

Students are given uninterrupted work time. They take control of their learning!

“Children are able to choose their own work that gives them a sense of responsibility,” she said.

Students are also able to collaborate with each other to imitate scenarios they’ll face one day in the real world.

“It covers a very complete understanding of what the human being needs to be able to develop them to their full potential.”

The ultimate Montessori education lessons are building confidence, becoming leaders and developing a lifelong love of learning.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 60-year-old man found unresponsive in the intake area of the Camden County Jail on Sunday was pronounced dead about an hour later, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Pulaski County woman charged with murder in boyfriend’s death

Madison Stuerman

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Pulaski County woman has been charged with murder after allegedly killing her boyfriend on Friday.

Lea Ann Barba, 42, was charged Friday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Court documents state deputies were called to a home near Dixon on Friday afternoon for an unresponsive person after a gun was fired.

Barba was detained in a patrol vehicle, and Steven L. Chapman, 66, was found dead inside the home with a gunshot wound to his head.

Investigators said a semi-automatic Ruger SR9 9 mm pistol was found on the kitchen counter. Court documents state that the gun had one round partially in the chamber and one expended cartridge partially ejected but stuck.

Barba allegedly told deputies Chapman was her boyfriend for about three years and that the relationship was not good, according to court documents. Deputies reported that Barba said the victim beat and threatened to kill her.

Court documents state that Barba said the victim would force her into sexual relationships with men for drugs or cash. She allegedly told deputies he would threaten to hurt her if she reported him to law enforcement.

Barba allegedly told deputies that Chapman entered the home, grabbed the handgun from a shelf, and pointed it at her, threatening to kill her. She alleged that Chapman poked her head with the barrel of the gun.

Deputies say Barba pushed Chapman, causing him to stumble back into a chair. She then said she fired the gun, according to court documents. She told deputies she shot him because she was in fear for her life.

Deputies stated that Barba has a history of violence, probation revocations, and does not have a permanent address.

She is being held at the Pulaski County Jail on a $500,000 cash warrant.

As of Monday morning, no court date had been set.

Construction at Schriever SFB to cause significant traffic impacts through spring, summer

Scott Harrison

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — A project at the north gate of Schriever Space Force Base begins on Monday and will result in what the installation describes as longer commute times and heavier traffic congestion.

KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior began looking into the matter after hearing from several viewers who asked about the changes.

According to base leadership, construction at the north gate along Enoch Road, south of Highway 94, and near the Visitors Center, will require shifting most inbound traffic to the west gate, east of the Curtis Road/Irwin Drive intersection.

Between peak arrival hours of 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., all three lanes to and from the west gate will be inbound only; after that time, the traffic configuration will return to two inbound lanes and one outbound lane.

A temporary traffic signal is operating at the Curtis/Irwin intersection to help guide traffic.

Schriever officials hope this change will help ease traffic congestion caused by restrictions at the north gate.

During construction, the north gate access will be one lane inbound and one lane outbound, weekdays from 4:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the gate will be closed at all other times as crews build a temporary road around the work zone.

Base leadership said that part of the construction involves building a turnaround lane, allowing personnel who forget their IDs to easily turn around and retrieve them.

Generally, though, officials explained that the construction will increase base security.

Traffic into the west gate appeared to be its heaviest around 6:30 a.m.

The Road Warrior had hoped to interview Schriever officials on Friday, but the interview was canceled because of snowy conditions that led to an early release at the base; officials said that they’d be busy on Monday for the first day of the traffic changes.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMBC) — One of the suspects in the deadly mass shooting near Union Station at the tail end of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Victory Parade and Rally entered a plea to a lesser charge in court Monday.

Dominic Miller, originally charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with the shooting that killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan, entered a guilty plea to unlawful use of a weapon Monday. The second-degree murder charge was dropped. The unlawful use of a weapon was reduced to a Class E felony.

Miller has been sentenced to two years in prison and will receive credit for time already served.

Miller’s attorney says Miller has been in custody for more than two years and is expected to be released from jail soon.

Court records said the shooting followed an argument between two groups at the end of the rally.

Prosecutors alleged at the time that another suspect, Lyndell Mays, was the first to pull a gun during at the event, but that it was Miller who fired the fatal shot. A third adult, Terry Young, is also set to face trial in the shooting.

Mays won’t face trial for his part in the rally until March 29, 2027.

Young’s trial, scheduled for March 2026, has also been delayed.

Miller himself spent weeks in the hospital after also being wounded in the shooting.

Three suspects under the age of 18 were also charged. None were certified to stand trial as adults, meaning the cases remained in family court.

At the start of the plea hearing Monday, family members of Lisa Lopez-Galvan all spoke about their loss, how their lives and the community changed. They spoke to Miller saying they hoped he had remorse and would make changes to his life.

In court, Miller said he was remorseful and would pray for the family. He said that he never meant for the incident to happen.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KOAT) — This weekend, students across New Mexico had the opportunity to celebrate American history and culture through poetry at the 21st anniversary of the Poetry Out Loud event.

The event consisted of eleven high school students who were state finalists and represented their schools, which ranged across the state.

The event showcased three rounds from the eleven finalists of spoken word poetry as well as a 15-minute performance from a mariachi band.

The students showcased poems from several famous artists, ranging from Langston Hughes to Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman. In light of International Women’s Day, some students chose poems that contained powerful messages about women’s rights.

“I wanted to include something that I connected with as a woman”, runner-up Noelle Humphreys said. “I love Georgia Douglas Johnson, so I chose ‘The Heart of a Woman’ because it really moved me.”

The winner of the event, Hadas Frish, received $200 as well as a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry material. In addition to the cash prize, the winner also received an all-expense-paid trip to represent New Mexico at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., in April.

“I think the topic that I chose and the way that I delivered it helped me,” Hadas said. “Not a lot of people talk about women’s suffrage in their poems, and I think that’s something that stood out to the judges.”

Hadas said she is also excited to head to Washington, D.C., to represent New Mexico in the state finals.

Arizona woman dies after falling through ice on Alexander Reservoir

Curtis Jackson

SODA SPRINGS, Idaho (KIFI) — A 27‑year‑old Arizona woman died Sunday after she and her brother fell through thin ice while attempting to fish on Alexander Reservoir, according to the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:52 p.m., when emergency dispatchers received a report that two people had broken through the ice about two miles east of Soda Springs. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find both individuals about 200 feet from the reservoir’s northern shoreline, the office said in a news release.

First responders crossed the unstable ice “at great risk,” according to the Sheriff’s Office, and were able to pull the 34‑year‑old man out of the freezing water. He was transported across the ice to safety, treated by EMTs on shore, and then taken to Caribou Medical Center. He is expected to recover.

As rescuers worked to save the man, the woman slipped underwater. A deputy of the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team entered the icy opening to locate her. She was removed from the water, treated immediately by EMTs, and transported to Caribou Medical Center. The Sheriff’s Office said she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Sheriff’s office said the siblings from Arizona had walked onto the reservoir ice to fish. The ice at the location where they fell through measured only about four inches thick.

OAKDALE, Calif. (KCRA) — Two children and two adults were killed after a vehicle crashed and caught fire in Stanislaus County early Sunday morning, officials said. Two other children were seriously injured.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to reports of a solo vehicle crash after 3:05 a.m. on the Oakdale-Waterford Highway near Claribel Road. CHP said a 2014 Dodge SUV was fully engulfed in flames when officers arrived, with two children outside of it.

The SUV was traveling northbound when the driver veered off the road and hit a concrete barrier, according to CHP. When it caught flames, a 12-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy were able to get themselves out of the vehicle.

Four other people were pronounced dead at the scene.

A family member identified the victims as Adrian Solorio, Brenda Cisneros, their 5-year-old child and an infant.

The relative of Solorio said the husband and wife were leaving a family gathering in Merced and were just 10 minutes from their home when the crash took place.

The children who made it out of the vehicle suffered major injuries and were taken to UC Davis Medical Center in a helicopter, officials said.

It is unclear what caused the driver of the SUV to crash. An investigation is still underway, according to CHP.
