Sunny Sunday and colder final days of 2025

Danielle Mullenix

After much wet weather and fluctuating warm temperatures across the region, our skies have cleared, and temperatures have dropped below freezing for the final days of 2025. Cooler Arctic winds are giving residents across Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming a slight chill as we close out the year and enter 2026.

Sunday will remain sunny, with a high of 27 degrees, followed by a chilly Monday morning with a low of 8 degrees. This will be the week’s coldest day, with highs holding below freezing. High temperatures at the start of the final week of the year will be in the lower 30s. While temperatures will be cooler, drier weather should provide a welcome pause after several days of unsettled holiday weather.

Looking ahead, high temperatures will gradually rise through the middle of next week, but overnight lows will remain in the teens after Monday. Some high-pressure ridging will support these dry conditions we’ll experience, only light winds, and a gradual warming trend will occur by New Year’s Day. No weather hazards or impacts are currently expected. Be aware of patchy ice on the roads in the mountain passes near the Island Park area.

There is a chance of mixed rain and snow returning to our area by New Year’s Day on Thursday, and moisture will continue to move into the weekend.

What to know before you gift someone a pet

Daniella Lake

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – Pets could be a great gifts for the holidays if you know someone looking for a new furry friend. However, local animal shelters say there’s a few things to keep in mind before you surprise someone with a new companion or if you’re the one welcoming them to your family.

Try to include the person you’re gifting a pet in the entire selection process.

Don’t just go for looks, think about the temperament of the pet and the lifestyle you’d like to have before brining them into your home.

Make sure to have fresh food and water for the pet ready when you get home.

Keep your new pet in one specific area in the home for the first few days so they can adjust to the sights and smells of the home, then slowly introduce them to other rooms after.

Jack Hagerman, the associate executive director at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, says that it often takes pets three days to decompress in your home, three weeks to get used to a routine, and three months to feel like it’s home.

“When you bring a pet home for the first time, it’s going to take them a minute to truly acclimate and get used to being a part of your family,” Hagerman says.

Boonville shooting suspect tied to Howard County home invasion

Marie Moyer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

No one was injured following a shooting in Boonville on Saturday night, according to the Boonville Police Department.

In a social media post, on Saturday, around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Morgan Street, two people in a car got into a fight. This led to the driver leaving the vehicle and running away, and the suspect was the passenger pulling out a gun and firing from the inside of the vehicle.

The passenger then drove off in the vehicle. Police later found the vehicle and the suspect, the passenger, a short while later near New Franklin.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office later reported that the suspect was connected to a reported home invasion in the Rosewood Subdivision, just outside of New Franklin

The suspect is being held on 24-hour investigative detention. Charges will be filed by the Cooper County Prosecutor’s office.

Residents describe Boonville as a quiet, small town and said incidents like this are uncommon. Business owners along Main Street told ABC 17 they rarely feel unsafe, despite noticing an increase in police activity.

Terry Quinlan, owner of the antique shop Vintage Vibes, has run his business on Main Street for the past two years. “Very calm. We feel safe here,” he said, recalling his hometown. Quinlan was unaware of Saturday’s incident, as his store closes at 4 p.m., but he said violent events are rare in the area. “It’s a rare occurrence here in town,” Quinlan said. “I know there’s more that goes on in Columbia, but it’s very rare here in town.”

Right across the street from Quinlan is Your Money’s Worth Antique Mall. Volunteer Anthony Cox agreed with Quinlan, stating there has been a small uptick in shootings, usually involving youth, but nothing he considers alarming. “I think it’s just kids trying to act tough,” he said.

Cox added that his wife, who works at Hotel Frederick, witnessed the scene Saturday. “She saw that they had Main Street kind of closed down from about the edge of the bridge pretty much all the way downtown. They were taking care of the scene, making sure they got all the evidence they needed, and they just stated to everybody that it was a crime scene,” he said.

According to Boonville police, Saturday’s shooting marks the fourth reported shooting in the city in 2025.

Boonville police responded to shots fired around 3 p.m. May 9 at Main Street and Rankin Mill Lane. Officers found evidence a gun was discharged, but no injuries were reported. The suspect or suspects fled before police arrived.

On July 24th BPD responded around 10:30 a.m. to a report of a gunshot victim near Main and High Streets. Officers found a man inside a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said the shooting occurred elsewhere in Howard County, and the victim drove himself to the location.

On Nov. 24th police responded to shots fired near Sixth and Locust streets after a man fired a gun following an argument with a woman. The suspect fled on foot but was later located on Seventh Street and taken into custody with a firearm.

ABC 17 has reached out to the Boonville Police Department for the suspect’s identity. Officers said additional information is expected to be released Monday.

“Dino didn’t replace our son by no means, but he gave us a piece that that we knew that our son, you know, cared for, you know, and Dino cared for him,” said Salvador Diaz Jr. “Project Always Beside You” President, during an interview.

Sandra Diaz recalls the comfort of touching and playing with Dino, knowing Christopher had done the same while in Afghanistan.

“You bring home a baby, so you’re prepared. But when you get an adoption like this, you’re not as much as prepared, especially for a loss,” said Sandra Diaz, “Project Always Beside You” Treasurer.

“Project Always Beside You” funds medical care, equipment, relocation and memorial programs to help retired K9s and their handlers.

Today the nonprofit continues to assists active-duty personnel, veterans and families across the United States, including providing urgent medical aid and support for K9 retirement and adoption processes.
