80 mph winds, wicked weather sweeps across Eastern Idaho

Seth Ratliff

EASTERN IDAHO — “Wicked” weather is wreaking havoc across the region today as a line of powerful thunderstorms sweeps through. Local News 8 is tracking this storm in real-time and will provide continuous live updates as new reports of damage and outages come in.

American Falls/Aberdeen: Power Outage and Warming Station

Idaho Power crews are working around the clock to restore electricity in American Falls and Aberdeen. However, the utility warns that some residents should prepare to be without power overnight.

If you are affected, a warming shelter is opening at American Falls High School. To access the facility, you must first contact Power County Dispatch at 208-226-2319.

Downed Trees and Power Lines

With wind gusts clocked at up to and above 80 mph, we are seeing widespread reports of structural damage and utility failures.

Idaho Power crews are working to fix a downed power line in Pocatello on Pocatello Creek Road.

Power County: Travel Advisory

The Power County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert on Facebook, advising travelers to avoid traveling down North Pleasant Valley Rd and South Pleasant Valley Rd due to multiple downed power lines and trees in the area.

“Please do not travel these roads unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!!” the Highway District wrote on Facebook. “It is not safe for travel. We have exhausted all of our resources to close the roads. DO NOT travel these roads simply to observe the damage.”

PCSO confirms they have deputies, Idaho Power, and the Power County Highway District addressing the issue.

I-15 closed near Bannock/Oneida County Line

All northbound lanes of I-15 are currently blocked at the Bannock/Oneida County line following a major crash near milepost 28. According to Idaho 511, the incident began around 1:27 PM.

Local drivers have reported multiple overturned semi-trucks south of McCammon, with photos showing the impact to the area.

Butte County

Severe winds have left a trail of damage in Howe, Idaho, with the local community center bearing the brunt of the storm. Resident Kevin Smith reports that two power poles were impacted and a transformer was knocked to the ground at the facility. He says utility crews are currently on-site and are expected to continue repairs through midnight.

The wind also damaged two local churches: photos show significant roofing torn from the LDS church building and a large tree downed at the Little Lost River Bible Church.

I-84 reopens after Semis blown over by severe winds

Both directions of Interstate 84 were closed between mile markers 230 and 240 due to two separate semi-truck rollovers caused by high winds. The road reopened around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the closure via Facebook.

Bingham County: Travel Advisory/Downed Power Lines

Bingham County Sheriff’s Office has issued a travel advisory due to the extreme weather sweeping through the area, warning drivers to avoid traveling west of Aberdeen due to “multiple power lines down all over the roads.” The Power Company and officers are on the scene, and BCSO says they are addressing the issue as best as they can.

Pocatello: Downed Lines and Fallen Trees

Pocatello Police are currently responding to a surge of calls involving fallen trees and downed power lines. Authorities are urging all residents to exercise extreme caution when leaving their homes, as hazards may be obscured by debris.

Police and Fire personnel are working to reopen roads and secure affected areas while utilities work to shut off power to impacted lines.

If you see a downed power line, Police say assume it is live and follow these safety tips.

Stay at least 30 feet away from the line and anything touching it.

Do not attempt to move the line or objects around it.

Avoid driving over or stepping near water that may be energized.

If a powerline falls on your vehicle, stay inside until emergency personnel arrive.

Call 911 or the utility company to report downed lines immediately.

Crews work to clear a fallen tree on Riverside Drive in Pocatello on December 17, 2025.

Residents of homes built before 1990 will be notified of upcoming water line inspections

Joaquin Hight

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Was your home built before 1990? If so, you’ll be the first to be notified of any upcoming water line inspections.

As per new nationwide requirements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the City of Yuma will be notifying residents of any homes built before the year 1990 of inspections to the home’s water line. This is to ensure that the water in the home is safe and clean for the residents.

This year, the City has completed well over 12,000 inspections with no findings of lead service lines, a great sign for our safety in drinking water.

While lead in drinking water has never been an issue in the City of Yuma, these inspections are the most important step towards ensuring that fact remains true.

The EPA and the City of Yuma want residents to know that getting an inspection notice does not mean there is lead in your water, or that it is unsafe.

It simply means that the service line has not been inspected.

CV Link Ramon connection lacks safe pedestrian crossing while under construction

Athena Jreij

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – While the CV Link opened in November, several parts of the stretch remain unfinished including a crosswalk at the Ramon Road bridge in Palm Springs.

The Ramon crossing stands at the entrance of Palm Springs from Cathedral City, and often sees drivers traveling at fast speeds across the bridge.

News Channel 3 reached out to the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) for more information on their efforts to make the crossing safe.

In a statement, officials said they had originally planned an under crossing when construction to widen the bridge was finished, but have now began construction due to high demand.

Still, that leaves no safe option for riders to cross the bridge while under construction.

While News Channel 3 was on the scene, crews spotted several riders waiting up to 10 minutes for a gap in traffic to cross.

Speaking with travelers, several hailed the Link for it’s innovative connection through the Valley. However, many acknowledged the lack of safe crossways have made their travels unnerving, forcing many to turn around.

“I will not go if it’s unsafe. You know, if I have to race across, we’ll just turn around,” Sherrey and Dan Morrison from Washington state said.

“I’m not going to cross that road. No, it’s too busy. Cars don’t see you or people are fiddling with their texts. Even if you’ve got a bike lane, I’ve seen people weave in and out,” Tom Adair from Palm Springs said.

Others said they can wait for traffic, but wish the pathway had opened finished.

“Especially with the winter coming, there’s more traffic on road. So you got to wait a little bit and it’s challenging sometimes to get across, but you just have to wait … My husband won’t come with me though, because of this,” Chris Jaimerson of Palm Springs said.

CVAG says construction on the under crossing is estimated to be finished sometime next week.

Driggs sex offender facing federal child exploitation charges pleads not guilty; released on home confinement

Seth Ratliff

DRIGGS, Idaho (KIFI) — A 68-year-old Driggs man and registered sex offender is facing federal charges after allegedly sharing and promoting child sexual abuse material. Dennis J. Empey has pleaded not guilty and was granted pretrial release from jail under strict conditions.

Empey was formerly charged with multiple counts of possessing, soliciting, distributing, and disseminating child sexual abuse material in Teton County, Idaho. The case was elevated to federal authorities after Teton County investigators reviewed evidence for potential violations of federal law.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond E. Patricco released Empey from jail, placing him under home confinement with GPS monitoring while he awaits trial. His release is contingent upon strict adherence to several rules, including limited internet access, a total prohibition on contact with minors, and third-party supervision. Any violation of these terms will result in his immediate return to custody.

The charges stem from a December 2024 incident following a report from a hospital worker. According to court filings, the worker spotted images of young children on Empey’s phone while he was attempting to show medical staff a photograph of a wound. On January 15, 2025, detectives interviewed Empey at his residence, where he consented to a digital search of his device.

Upon further search, detectives discovered a cache of sexually exploitative videos and photographs of children. Investigators also discovered WhatsApp messages dating back to September 2024, which detailed communications between Empey and two 17-year-old boys living in other countries.

Empey is a registered sex offender with prior convictions for abusing minors as a Boy Scout Leader.

He is scheduled to go to trial on January 20, 2026, in Pocatello. If convicted on the federal counts, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and the possibility of lifetime supervised release.

Locals begin to celebrate Hanukkah

Eduardo Morales

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – This week, Hanukkah started on Sunday, December 14, encouraging family and friends to come together and celebrate.

The holiday, also known as the festival of light, celebrates the story of perseverance, hope, and blessings.

Each night, people gather together to light another candle on the menorah.

“The nice thing is you can spread it out and be with friends one night or family the other night, and kind of spread it through the week, we exchange small gifts, we share lots of stories, and light and love,” says Rachael Barkley, a member of the local Jewish community.

Meanwhile, Kristine Lavotshkin, another local member, says everyone is welcome to celebrate the holiday.

“You want to come, come on in, come check it out because it’s really special,” Lavotshkin said.

She says she loves to hear different discourse.

“It’s about debating with what we believe and in sharing knowledge, and wisdom, and having conversations, and still laughing and eating laoticus at the end,” Lavotshkin explains.

Barkley also shares what the holiday is all about.

“Sharing out light with everybody, and spreading the light by lighting our candles hopefully with the world to make it a better place, make more people love each other than hate each other,” said Barkley.

There are still six days left, this means six candles are left to light as the festival and celebrations continue.

RAM boom raises device prices

Olivia Vara

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — RAM prices are rising as AI data centers increase their demand for memory, narrowing the supply that is available to customers. A tighter supply could increase prices for PCs, smartphones, gaming consoles and other devices that rely on RAM.

ABC-7 spoke with Manuel Caballero, owner of EP Electrocenter, to hear firsthand how rising RAM prices are affecting repairs and consumer electronics.

“Spend a little more upfront to get it now before prices rise further,” Caballero advised. “Or wait to see if another company offers alternative RAM options. Right now, there isn’t an easy fix, and prices are higher.”

Major AI data centers, including operations associated with OpenAI, Meta and Google require rapid memory to run larger models.

Stores are passing on these rising costs to shoppers, with many now opting to buy pre-built PCs.

If demand remains high, prices could also remain high for consumers going forward. The broader impact on consumer prices will depend on how quickly memory supply can ramp up and how manufacturers manage pricing going forward.
