YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma (STEDY) celebrated their building renovation and ten year anniversary with a ribbon cutting Tuesday.

The STEDY District celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring those who have helped get it to the decade mark.

They also celebrated new additions to the building, including new rooms, and equipment.

STEDY currently has 180 students enrolled and Adan Santos, a current student, shares how the program has helped him.

“I feel like having that hands-on experience, that you really can’t get anywhere else, has really allowed me to solidify and know that this is what I’m going to do. It’s really helped me discover the passion I have for the future, and I’m eternally grateful for the program,” Santos says.

In the previous decade, 300 students have graduated from the district.

It offers classes in cosmetology, information technology, and the medical field.

The district suprintendent, Tom Tyree, explains how they prepare students for the future.

“The jobs of today and the future are really highly technical jobs, and so, a lot of the things we do are STEM-related types of activities and things that will support our students and our workforce,” said Tyree.

The program has students involved from all over Yuma County and several school districts.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is hosting a Coffee with a Cop event next week.

Taking place at Mostly Muffins, located at 2451 W. 16th Street, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5, YPD says the event provides an opportunity for the Yuma community to ask one-on-one questions and learn more about their work in the community.

They say contact with law enforcement usually happens during emergencies and emotional situations, but the event can break down those barriers and build healthier relationships.

YPD says the event is a national initiative supported by the Justice Department and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Anchor Skylar Heisey was in Somerton Monday, where Grijalva met with seniors to talk about the how the government shutdown, and the delay of being sworn in, is affecting families across the Desert Southwest.

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA) – Rep.-Elect Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) says the government shutdown, and her delay in being sworn in are leaving her district without critical resources.

Without being officially sworn in, Grijalva says she can’t open an office, hire staff, or access her federal budget, leaving her unable to serve the very people who elected her.

“It’s totally affecting everybody in the district. I don’t have a budget. I can’t enter into a lease. Some people say, ‘Well, you could just go into your dad’s office.’ I can’t. It’s a brand new lease, and until I’m sworn in, I can’t authorize federal dollars. So it’s affecting everyone,” Grijalva shared.

Grijalva says the situation could worsen as SNAP benefits are cut, hitting programs that feed seniors.

“Starting November 1, SNAP benefits are going to be cut, and the programs here funded by SNAP, like the meal programs, it affects senior centers, it affects Head Starts, and every age in between. It’ll have a devastating impact that our local communities are not gonna be able to withstand very long,” Grijalva expressed.

She says the delay has been frustrating, leaving her unable to do her job while Congress remains gridlocked.

“It is so frustrating because I don’t have any official role. Congress isn’t voting, and where we should be at the negotiating table helping fix it for the American people…I can’t. I don’t have any ability to do my job until I get sworn in,” Grijalva remarked.

Grijalva says her goal is to stay focused on the people she serves, and says she plans to keep fighting for her seat in Congress, just like her late father would have.

Following her visit to the senior center, Grijalva joined local leaders at Gateway Park Monday afternoon to talk about the future of the Colorado River.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – A suspect has been arrested in connection to an attempted murder that took place last month.

According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), they arrested and booked a 47-year-old Yuma man for first degree attempted murder Friday, October 24.

On September 11, YCSO says deputies responded to the area of Myrtle Avenue and Ninth Street, close to Kiwanis Park, where they found an 18-year-old man with critical injuries.

The victim was taken to Onvida Health, but was later flown to a Phoenix area hospital “due to the extent of his injuries,” YCSO said.

The suspect is being held on a bond of $350,000, and the case remains under investigation at this time.

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA) – Police are looking for multiple suspects after a sports store in El Centro was robbed.

The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) says several suspects stole a truck from Brawley and another car from El Centro.

Abdin Aziz, the owner of Rainbow Sports, says he received a call from the alarm company saying something had happened at his store and that they were calling the police.

“I said well wait let me see what is going on because sometimes I do received false so then they did not dispatch the police and when I checked the camera then I did see something wrong with the store like lots of clothing in the floor,” said Aziz.

Police say the suspects used the truck to crashed into the Rainbow Sports store located on South Imperial Avenue and West Hamilton Avenue near Wilson Junior High School.

The crash created an opening and causing significant damage.

The owner says the suspects were able to steal more than two-thousand worth of merchandise.

“This is our baby…Yes, we lost a lot of money, but at the same time, the interaction with the customers like everyday. We have people who come like everyday. We know people who became like friends so when someone comes to destroy. We say like our cozy nest…this is our nest,” Aziz expressed.

Police says once the suspects left the scene they also took both vehicles with them.

ECPD later recovered both vehicles, the stolen truck was recovered in El Centro and the car was located in Brawley.

Meanwhile, the store says they are still open and have created a go fund me for the owner of the truck.

“Like he mentioned, he only had liability for the van so the van is completely totaled and the last thing I do know of is that is being held in an impound place and he’s being charged…Do you know daily,” said Britteny Farias, manager of Rainbow Sports.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Yuma County Education Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2025-2026 Hall of Fame.

The event will be merging with the Legacy Gala to announce winners of the awards.

Awards include the Professional Educator Award, Frances Woodard Award, Estelle Dingus Award, Outstanding Organization Contributing to Yuma County, Special Achievement Award, and the Founders’ Award.

Gila Vista Junior High School Principal Frank Nunez shares how important the event and Gala are for the community.

“The Hall of Fame event and the Legacy Gala commit themselves to honoring all the educators of the past who have made an impact on Yuma community education,” he said.

Applications for nominations can be submitted no later than November 13th, 2025. Community members, educators, teachers, alumni, leaders and organizations are encouraged to submit cominations.

Inductees will be revealed at the January 22, 2026 Legacy Gala, and again at the Teacher of the Year Banquet on April 30, 2026.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – A friendly reminder that the deadline to register for Yuma’s Annual Veterans Day Parade is quickly approaching.

All participating marchers and floats must be registered by this Saturday, November 1. This year’s theme is “Honoring Generations of Veterans.”

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The Arizona Western College (AWC) District Governing Board announced Dr. Reetika Dhawan as their sole preferred candidate to replace Dr. Daniel Corr as AWC President.

According to a press release, “While no formal action has yet been taken, the board plans to hold candidate forums and a formal interview in the month of November.”

“This direction is not taken lightly and comes after much conversation and reflection on how the board can best support the historic growth of the college, and all the progress made across the district,” said Board Chair Dennis Booth said. “We also really care about ensuring stability considering various pressures and rapid change in higher education trends. We are considering Dr. Dhawan’s candidacy with a deep sense of responsibility for the students, the families, our employees, and the communities we are elected to serve.”

AWC says they are inviting college faculty, staff, students and community members to participate in any of the following candidate town hall events next month:

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – The U.S. Marshals Service, Yuma County Adult Probation and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) conducted a sex offender compliance operation in Yuma County last week.

Taking place from October 17 to October 24, the operation was in collaboration with other state and federal agencies, where it resulted in 26 verified sex offenders and the arrest of two convicted sex offenders.

“These operations are significant to our partners and the Marshals as they provide a way to ensure compliance for high-risk sex offenders as we continually strive to protect our communities and prevent future victims,” said District of Arizona U.S. Marshal Van Bayless.

According to a press release, the targeted areas during the operation include Yuma, Somerton, San Luis and other areas within the county like Dateland.

The U.S. Marshal Service said, “Given the large area, coordinating compliance verification for nearly 30 sex offender registrations required detailed planning and cooperation between several partner agencies.”

They then determined 26 registered sex offenders were compliant with the registration requirements while “one was unable to have their registration verified and is pending further investigation” and two people were arrested for unrelated charges.

“Protecting our community, especially our children, is always our top priority. We value our partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service, which helps ensure offenders remain in compliance and our neighborhoods stay safe. This successful operation is a strong example of what can be accomplished when local and federal agencies work together,” said Tania Pavlak with YCSO.

WINTERHAVEN, Calif. (KYMA) – The San Pasqual Valley Unified School District is holding a series of events this week in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week, taking place October 23 through October 31, is a weeklong effort to help communities across the country take a stand against drugs and help keep kids drug-free.

The school district kicked off the week with a march to the high school gymnasium Monday, with the superintendent introducing Danny Gutierrez, who held a presentation for the students.

The district will also hold a variety of events later in the week, such as a Resource Fair Day on Tuesday, Pledge Day on Wednesday, DEA Assembly Day on Thursday and a door decorating contest on Friday.
