Man accused of shooting at a YCSO helicopter formally charged

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The man accused of shooting at a Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) helicopter appeared in court Monday where he was formally charged.

51-year-old Muburak Prince of Dateland pleaded not guilty to seven counts including aggravated assault, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.

On June 13, Prince is accused of opening fire on an unmarked sheriff’s helicopter. YCSO said the aircraft was damaged, but there were no injuries.

Three counts of attempted murder were initially brought against Prince, but those charges were not filed.

Prince remains under custody and is being held on a $1 million bond.

He is scheduled to be back in court next week.

El Centro man arrested for domestic violence and possessing firearms

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) arrested a man Sunday after responding to reports of domestic violence.

ECPD says officers were told that the man was “attempting to retrieve his belongings which included a ‘ghost gun’ and another unregistered firearm.”

After they arrived, ECPD says officers discovered a Glock 9mm Ghost Gun, a Colt .38 Special Revolver, ammunition and four brass knuckles, which they considered illegal weapons.

ECPD says the man was a convicted felon, which made him prohibited from possessing firearms.

As a result, the man was arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail without incident and the firearms and illegal weapons were taken by ECPD as evidence.

Arizona Pride Tour to stop in Yuma to host Halloween Bash

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Arizona Pride Tour is stopping in Yuma to host a Halloween edition of their show.

The tour previously stopped in Yuma back in April, with 349 people attending that event, according to the executive director of Miss Nature LLC.

The event is taking place at Historic Yuma Theatre on Friday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m., with the doors opening for VIP members at 6:00 p.m. while the doors will open for the general public at 6:15 p.m.

Several artists will be performing at the event, and they include Miss Nature, Geo, Inky Oshanns and Poision Oshanns, as well as two performers from Bakersfield, California: Shaleah Moore and Sasha Reign Dupree.

The tour is also encouraging anyone who attends the event to dress up as the winner will receive a $500 cash prize for best costume.

GoFundMe created for Somerton family left without a home

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A family in Somerton was left without a home after it caught on fire.

According to Rural Metro, it took place last Wednesday in the area of W. County 16th Street and S. Avenue B 1/2.

Rural Metro said crews arrived and found a single-story mobile home on fire, prompting crews to quickly deploy “multiple hose lines.”

With help from the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department, the fire was eventually put out, according to Rural Metro.

While there were no injuries reported, Rural Metro said one animal was severely injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We are incredibly grateful that everyone made it out safely, but now eight people, including children, are left without a home and without even the basics — not a single piece of clothing, bedding, or safe place to sleep,” the post said.

The GoFundMe was created to help them get back on their feet, with the donations going towards temporary housing, clothing, food and “rebuilding some sense of normalcy for this family of eight who have lost everything,” the post added.

Boys & Girls Club of Imperial Valley receives grant donation from JCPenney

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – The Boys & Girls Club of Imperial Valley (BGCIV) received a check donation from JCPenney Saturday.

The check presentation took place at JCPenney, located at the Imperial Valley Mall in El Centro, at 9:00 a.m.

The club says they received $6,642 as to highlight JCPenney’s support for BGCIV as well as to help “continue providing enriching, safe, and fun opportunities” for their club members throughout the summer.

In addition, JCPenney hosted a shopping event where club members received a $50 gift card and a special discount coupon.

Fundraiser to help local man with ALS

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A fundraiser is being held to help a Yuma man on his journey with ALS.

ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which makes the muscles weak.

The fundraiser is for Bradford Buckman, which will be held at 1701 S. Arizona Avenue FTS Auto.

A pulled pork lunch is being offered for $10 on July 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local organization offering APS energy bill relief

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – CPLC Family Assistance is offering local families relief from rising energy bills for the summer.

An event will be held on Friday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., where certain households can ask for assistance at Campesinos Sin Fronteras (663 E. main St. Ste. A, Somerton, AZ 85350).

First come, first served to get pre-screened. Documents will be required, and is by appointment only.

To qualify, the household must be facing hardship.

Somerton to celebrate Independence Day early

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Somerton is hosting an early Independence Day celebration.

Somerton’s Fourth of July event is going to be on Thursday, July 3 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Council Street Park.

There will be food, live music and entertainment for the entire family.

There’s also a new attraction this year.

“Everything will be total free and our famous and traditional water balloon fight also this time is the first time ever that we are going to have a drone show instead of fireworks,” said Stephanie Pereda, Somerton special event coordinator.

Council Street Park is located on Council Street next to the city library.

Yuma County approves new $552M budget

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma County has approved a $552 million budget for the new fiscal year, down from $571 million last year.

The budget will fund projects like the new administration building downtown, a major remodel of the Health District building, a new transfer station in South County, and park upgrades.

“This is a conservative, sound, fiscally sustainable budget that funds numerous projects…without increasing the property tax rate,” said Ian McGaughey, County Administrator.

No new positions were added, but current staff will get a 3% raise.

“We thought it was prudent to just hold the line, and maximize our current employees,” McGaughey said.

McGaughey added that cuts in grant funding, especially to the Health District, could affect some services.

“We’re gonna have to evaluate whether those programs are things we can continue with internal funding,” he said.

Man struck by vehicle in Holtville expected to make full recovery

HOLTVILLE, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)- A man was hit by a vehicle after he attempted to cross the street in Holtville.

The Holtville Fire Department (HFD) says the 70-year-old man was crossing Fifth Street and Walnut Avenue on Monday, June 23 when he was hit.

HFD says the driver had the right of way.

“The driver stayed on scene and assisted us and provided with medical aid till we got there he was of course in shock about what happened but we talked to him and he will be okay,” said Fire Chief Alex Silva.

The man suffered major injuries to the right side of his body, including on his face and some broken bones.

He was airlifted to Desert Regional and is expected to make a full recovery.
